Farewell, Takayama!

As our Japanese adventure draws to a close, Hans and I spent our final day immersed in the historical and cultural tapestry of Takayama. From exploring ninja weaponry to delving into the city's rich heritage, every moment was a vibrant brushstroke on the canvas of our memories. It’s hard to believe our fifteen days in Japan are already coming to an end. This morning, as I packed my reusable water bottle and double-checked that Hans had his travel guidebook, a bittersweet feeling washed over me, a mix of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had and a tinge of sadness that our journey is nearly over.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arai. We both enjoyed a comforting bowl of Udon, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The simple yet flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles were a delightful start, reminding me of the comforting soups my Abuela used to make back in Alcalá de Guadaira.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Ninja Weapon Museum. I've always been fascinated by the artistry and skill of these ancient warriors, and seeing their tools up close was incredible. From shuriken to swords, each weapon told a story of strategy, precision, and survival. I couldn't help but imagine myself, a humble urban beekeeper from Berlin, trying to wield these deadly instruments. I think I'll stick to tending my hives, though!

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of history, where whispers of the past echo in the present.

After our ninja adventure, we strolled to the Takayama City Museum. Housed in a beautifully restored building, the museum offered a comprehensive look at the city's history and culture. From its humble beginnings as a castle town to its flourishing merchant era, Takayama’s story unfolded before our eyes. I was particularly captivated by the exhibits on local crafts and traditions, which highlighted the ingenuity and artistry of the people who have called this city home for centuries.

As we wandered through the museum, I couldn't help but reflect on our journey through Japan. From the serene beauty of Shirakawa-go to the bustling streets of Takayama, we've experienced so much in such a short time. I thought about how different this was to our life back in Berlin. This trip has been a beautiful escape and a reminder of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the world around us.

For lunch, we decided to try Tenshukaku, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. We opted for a set meal, which included a variety of local delicacies. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. As a vegetarian, I was delighted by the creative use of seasonal vegetables, a testament to Japan's commitment to fresh, sustainable ingredients.

In the afternoon, we took a leisurely stroll through Ebisu-ya, a charming shop filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for friends and family back home, tokens of our adventure to share with those we love. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan for my mother, a reminder of the vibrant colors and delicate artistry we've encountered throughout our travels.

As evening approached, we made our way to Nomura for our final dinner in Takayama. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of local specialties. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, ordered a Hida beef dish, while I opted for a vegetarian Kaiseki meal. Each course was a culinary masterpiece, a symphony of flavors and textures that left us feeling satisfied and content.

Reflecting on our meal at Nomura, I realized how much I appreciated the Japanese approach to food. It's not just about sustenance; it's about celebrating the seasons, honoring local ingredients, and creating a harmonious balance of flavors. It’s a philosophy I hope to incorporate more into my own cooking back in Berlin, perhaps using honey from my rooftop hives to create unique and flavorful dishes.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. We’ve explored ancient temples, wandered through picturesque villages, and savored the flavors of Japan. We've learned about a culture that values tradition, respect, and harmony with nature. And we've created memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow marks the end of our trip. We will be heading back to Berlin, filled with stories and inspiration. Although I am sad to leave, I am also excited to return to my bees and share my experiences with my community. This trip has reminded me that adventure can be found anywhere, whether it's exploring a new city or tending to a hive of buzzing bees.

And to Hans, thank you for being the best travel companion a girl could ask for. Your adventurous spirit and unwavering support have made this journey even more special. I can't wait to see what adventures await us back in Berlin, and beyond.

Until next time, Japan. Arigato!
