A Tapestry of Tradition

Today, Hans and I dove deep into the cultural heart of the Hida region, exploring the intricate crafts and savoring the delicious flavors that make this area so unique. It's amazing how much history and artistry is woven into the everyday life here. From delicate embroidery to the rich taste of local cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei. I am always grateful for good food and good company, and this morning was a perfect start to the day. The aroma of freshly cooked Japanese breakfast filled the air, and we enjoyed a traditional spread of grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. We discussed our plans for the day, excited to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Hans was particularly keen on seeing the Hida Takayama Museum of Art, while I was eager to experience the traditional craft of Hida-Sashiko.

After breakfast, we headed to Hida-Sashiko. Learning about Hida Sashiko was an absolute treat! Hida Sashiko is a traditional art form that has been passed down through generations in the Hida Takayama region. It's a type of Japanese embroidery that uses simple running stitches to create intricate patterns on fabric. Historically, it was used to reinforce and mend clothing, but over time, it evolved into a decorative art form. I was fascinated by the history of Sashiko and how it originated as a practical solution for mending clothes but eventually transformed into a beautiful art form. The patterns often have symbolic meanings, representing elements of nature, good luck, or protection. I learned that the stitches not only added strength to the fabric but also brought a sense of beauty and artistry to everyday items.

We had the opportunity to try our hand at this craft, and while my stitches were far from perfect, I thoroughly enjoyed the process. The shop was filled with beautiful examples of Sashiko, from wall hangings to clothing, each piece telling a story of the region's rich cultural heritage. It was inspiring to see how a simple technique could create such intricate and beautiful designs. I picked up a small kit, hoping to continue practicing this art when I return to Berlin. Perhaps I can even incorporate some of these patterns into my beekeeping gear!

The beauty of Hida Sashiko lies not just in the visual appeal of the finished product, but in the meditative process of creation and the connection to the region's history.

Next on our itinerary was the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. The Hida Takayama Museum of Art was a delightful surprise. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. Its contemporary design beautifully contrasts with the traditional crafts we had just experienced, showcasing the blend of old and new that defines this region. Inside, we explored an impressive collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass pieces and furniture. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the glassware were mesmerizing. Hans, with his engineering background, was particularly fascinated by the craftsmanship and the innovative techniques used to create these pieces.

We spent a couple of hours wandering through the museum, admiring the artistry and learning about the history of each piece. The museum also offered stunning views of the surrounding Japanese Alps, adding another layer of beauty to the experience. It was a perfect way to appreciate the artistic achievements of different cultures and eras.

For lunch, we stopped at Soba Wakimoto, a charming restaurant known for its traditional soba noodles and Hida beef dishes. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, with wooden tables and traditional Japanese decor. We ordered cold soba noodles with Hida beef and some assorted tempura. The soba noodles were perfectly chewy, and the Hida beef was incredibly tender and flavorful. The tempura was light and crispy, adding a delightful contrast to the meal. It was a truly satisfying and authentic Japanese culinary experience.

After lunch, we took some time to explore Shin ge do, a local shop known for its unique handmade crafts and folk art. The shop was a treasure trove of beautiful items, from woodblock print animals to hand-dyed fabrics. I was particularly drawn to the woodblock print animals. Shin ge do uses wood from the region to make their printing blocks. The designs, mainly of animals that can be seen in Hida-Takayama, are transferred to the woodblocks and hand dyed onto natural cotton. Each color designates a different block used, showing the time spent on each animal. After the dye is dried using steam, the animals are filled with natural casks and hand sewn. We picked up a few small souvenirs, including a set of hand-painted chopsticks and a small wooden carving of a bear, as reminders of our time in Hida Takayama.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Gassho for dinner. Gassho offers a delightful culinary experience in a traditional setting. The restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and warm hospitality. We enjoyed a multi-course meal featuring local specialties, such as Hida beef skewers, grilled river fish, and mountain vegetables. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

Reflecting on our experiences today, I am struck by the enduring spirit of the Hida region and its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. From the intricate stitches of Hida-Sashiko to the exquisite flavors of Hida beef, every aspect of this region reflects a deep appreciation for tradition and craftsmanship. As someone who values sustainable living and environmental conservation, I am inspired by the way the people of Hida have managed to balance progress with the preservation of their natural and cultural resources.

Tomorrow, we'll be venturing further afield to Kanazawa, where we plan to visit Kanazawa Katani and explore the Nishi Chaya District. I am looking forward to discovering the unique charm and beauty of this coastal city. We plan on having breakfast at Hiiragi, lunch at Zensuke, and dinner at Hakusuien. I've heard wonderful things about Kanazawa's seafood and gardens, and I can't wait to share our experiences with you all. Until then, sayōnara!

This trip with Hans has been such a blessing. His curiosity and enthusiasm always bring a new dimension to our adventures. As we prepare for our final day in Japan, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country and share its rich culture with all of you.

It’s been an amazing journey, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
