Kyoto's Embrace: Temples, Gardens, and Culinary Delights

Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Kyoto, a city that continues to enchant me with its seamless blend of history and natural beauty. From the vibrant vermillion of Heian Shrine to the tranquil gardens of Eikan-dō Temple and the lush greenery of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, every moment felt like a step further into a world of serene splendor. And, of course, no day in Kyoto would be complete without indulging in its exquisite cuisine.

Our day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Fujiya. I opted for the traditional set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead, and Hans, ever the early bird, was already buzzing with excitement about our itinerary.

Our first stop was the magnificent Heian Shrine. The sheer scale of the *torii* gate, painted in vibrant vermillion, was breathtaking. It felt like stepping into another era as we walked through the expansive courtyard. The shrine, built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding, is a stunning replica of the original Imperial Palace. Wandering through the grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that permeated every corner. The architecture was simply stunning.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historic sites, but in the way it invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the present moment.

Afterward, we ventured to Eikan-dō Temple, known for its stunning autumn foliage, though even in late February, the gardens possessed a quiet beauty. The temple's history is rich, dating back to the 9th century, and its serene atmosphere was a welcome respite from the bustling city. I was particularly captivated by the Mikaeri Amida Buddha statue, which depicts the Buddha looking back over his shoulder, a symbol of compassion and guidance. Hans was fascinated by the architecture, especially the covered walkways that connected the various halls.

Next on our list was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, a sprawling oasis of greenery in the heart of the city. Founded in 1924, it's the oldest and most comprehensive botanical garden in Japan. Despite the winter chill, the gardens were bursting with life, from the vibrant camellias to the meticulously manicured bonsai. We spent hours wandering through the different sections, marveling at the diversity of plant life from around the world. The conservatory was a particular highlight, housing a stunning collection of tropical and subtropical plants. I made a mental note to return in the spring to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

For lunch, we chose Saishuan Shiraki, a small, intimate restaurant near the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The restaurant is known for its vegan Kyoto-style dishes, called Obanzai. It was a delightful culinary experience. The dishes were as beautiful as they were delicious, each one a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. I felt a sense of warmth and hospitality that made the meal even more special. Hans, who usually prefers meat dishes, was surprisingly impressed by the flavorful and inventive vegan cuisine.

In the afternoon, we did some shopping at Kyoto Porta, the underground shopping mall at Kyoto Station. It was a great place to pick up souvenirs and gifts for family and friends back in Berlin. The variety of shops was impressive, from traditional crafts to modern fashion. I found a beautiful silk scarf with a delicate floral pattern, perfect for adding a touch of Kyoto elegance to my wardrobe.

As evening approached, we made our way to Chihana for dinner. This acclaimed restaurant, known for its Kaiseki cuisine, offered a culinary experience that was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously crafted with seasonal ingredients and presented with impeccable attention to detail. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's mastery of Japanese cuisine. The ambiance was elegant and refined, making it the perfect setting for a special occasion. Hans and I savored every moment, knowing that this was a meal we would remember for a long time.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how much Kyoto has to offer. It's a city that rewards exploration, inviting you to discover its hidden gems and immerse yourself in its rich culture. From the grand shrines and tranquil temples to the lush gardens and exquisite cuisine, every experience is a feast for the senses. Traveling with friends has made this journey even more special, as we share new experiences and create lasting memories.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and perhaps enjoy a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I am excited to continue exploring the cultural riches of Kyoto.

As I sit here writing, with the gentle hum of the city outside my window, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Kyoto has captured my heart in a way that few places have, and I know that I will carry its beauty and serenity with me long after I leave. The city’s ability to transport you to another time, while still embracing the present, is a quality I deeply admire. Perhaps it’s the way the ancient temples stand proudly amidst modern buildings, or the way the locals honor traditions while embracing innovation. Whatever it is, Kyoto has a magic that is all its own.

I'm so glad I remembered to pack my comfortable walking shoes – they've been essential for navigating the city's many temples and gardens. However, I do wish I hadn't forgotten my Japanese phrasebook; it would have been helpful in communicating with the locals, even though many speak some English. And, of course, an umbrella would have been useful, given the occasional drizzle.

And as I close out this entry, I recall a quote I once read that perfectly captures my experience today: “To walk in Kyoto is to walk through a living tapestry of history, nature, and art.” I couldn’t agree more. Until tomorrow, *¡adiós* from Kyoto!
