Kyoto's Embrace: A Symphony of Senses

Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Kyoto, a city that continues to enchant me with its blend of ancient traditions and modern vibrancy. It was a day filled with spiritual reflection, artistic appreciation, and culinary delights, shared with my wonderful friends. From the tranquil gardens of Kodaiji Temple, to the captivating performances at Gion Corner and the serene atmosphere of Kenninji Temple, every moment was a treasure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store. The aroma of freshly fried tonkatsu filled the air as we stepped inside. It was a popular spot, and I was glad we arrived early to avoid a long queue. I chose the premium pork cutlet set, and it was simply divine. The pork was tender and juicy, encased in a perfectly crisp and golden-brown crust. I must admit, the entrance was so subtle that we almost missed it, but I'm so glad we persevered! It was the perfect start to a day of exploration and discovery.

With our stomachs happily full, we made our way to Kodaiji Temple. Founded in 1606 by Kita no Mandokoro, also known as Nene, in memory of her late husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a key figure in the unification of Japan, the temple exuded a sense of peace and history. As we wandered through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty and tranquility that surrounded us. The rock garden, designed to represent the vast ocean, was particularly captivating, inviting contemplation and reflection. The main hall, rebuilt in a more modest style after a fire in 1912, still retained its grandeur and offered a glimpse into the past.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its ancient temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, offering a unique and enriching experience for every traveler.

Ascending the hillside behind the temple, we reached the mausoleum of Hideyoshi and Nene, adorned with exquisite lacquerwork known as Kodaiji Makie. The intricate designs of powdered gold and silver set in lacquer were a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the era. Further up the hill, we discovered two charming tea houses, one of which was designed by the renowned tea master Sen no Rikyu. As a lover of tea, I found myself particularly drawn to this space, imagining the tea ceremonies that must have taken place here centuries ago. Our descent back to the temple buildings led us through a serene bamboo grove, its towering stalks creating a sense of enclosure and mystery.

Next on our itinerary was Gion Corner, a cultural theatre showcasing a variety of traditional Japanese performing arts. The performance was a whirlwind tour of Japanese culture, featuring everything from Kyomai dance and tea ceremony to ikebana flower arrangement and bunraku puppet theatre. I was particularly fascinated by the Kyomai dance, with its elegant movements and colourful costumes, and by the bunraku puppet theatre, with its intricate puppets and dramatic storytelling. It was a fantastic way to experience the breadth and depth of Japanese culture in a single setting. Hans especially enjoyed the comedic Kyogen theatre.

Before our cultural experience, we stopped for lunch at Kikunoi Roan. The two-Michelin-starred restaurant offered a modern take on classic kaiseki cuisine. The presentation was exquisite, each dish a work of art in itself. The flavours were bold and innovative, blending traditional Japanese ingredients with French and European cooking techniques. I particularly enjoyed the white miso-marinated egg yolk and the crab rice cooked with crab broth and meat. It was a culinary journey that tantalized our taste buds and left us wanting more.

With our appetites sated, we ventured to Kenninji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, who introduced Zen Buddhism and tea cultivation to Japan, the temple exuded a sense of serenity and contemplation. As we wandered through the temple grounds, we admired the intricate details of its architecture and the beauty of its Zen gardens. The Garden of the Sound of the Tide, with its three stones representing Buddha and two Boddhisattvas amidst moss-covered hills, was particularly captivating. The highlight of our visit was the Dharma Hall, adorned with a stunning mural of twin dragons on the ceiling, created in 2002 to commemorate the temple's 800th anniversary. Hans, ever the history enthusiast, was fascinated by the temple's rich past and its connection to the development of Japanese culture.

As the day drew to a close, we indulged in a delightful dinner at Gion Nanba. This Michelin-starred restaurant, tucked away in a narrow alley in Gion, offered an intimate and authentic kaiseki experience. The chef and staff were incredibly welcoming, explaining each dish with care and passion. The food was fresh, seasonal, and beautifully presented, showcasing the best of Kyoto cuisine. I savoured every bite, from the delicate sashimi to the flavourful grilled fish. The atmosphere was quiet and formal, adding to the sense of reverence and appreciation for the culinary artistry on display.

To cap off our day, we decided to visit Kyoto Star Bar. The bar had a unique charm, with a kimono-clad bartender and a sophisticated atmosphere. I opted for a Ki No Bi Negroni, a local favourite, and it was expertly crafted and utterly delicious. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. As I sipped my cocktail, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Kyoto with my dear friends.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – to immerse myself in new cultures, to explore ancient traditions, and to create lasting memories with the people I cherish. Kyoto, with its blend of spirituality, artistry, and gastronomy, continues to captivate and inspire me.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Kyoto adventure, and I'm excited to explore Nishiki Market, Pontocho, and Kyoto Ebisu Shrine. I also plan to pick up a few souvenirs at Noren by Corazon before we head home. I am especially looking forward to experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen. I’m sure we’ll find some great treats there!

As I reflect on our time in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. This city has a way of touching your soul, leaving you with a deep appreciation for its beauty, its history, and its people. Until next time, Kyoto, arigato gozaimasu!
