Saturdays in Florence: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the heart of Florence, a city that never ceases to amaze me with its layers of history and artistic treasures. Hans and I set out early, ready to explore some of the city's most iconic landmarks, each telling a story of power, faith, and artistic genius. From the grandeur of the Basilica di San Lorenzo to the intricate beauty of the Medici Chapels, and finally, the breathtaking climb up Giotto's Campanile, Florence unveiled more of its captivating soul to us.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Gilli, a Florentine institution that exudes old-world charm. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy table. I couldn't resist the temptation of a flaky sfogliatella, while Hans opted for a classic cornetto. Sipping my cappuccino, I felt a sense of anticipation for the day ahead, a feeling that only Florence can evoke. It's funny, even after all these years living in Germany, the simple pleasure of a good Italian coffee still feels like a special treat.

Fueled and ready, we made our way to the Basilica di San Lorenzo. As we approached, the unassuming façade of the basilica belied the artistic wonders that awaited us within. This church, deeply intertwined with the Medici family, is a testament to their influence and patronage. The raw brick exterior, so different from the ornate churches I’m used to seeing, hinted at the Renaissance ideals of proportion and harmony that define its interior. Inside, the basilica was a serene sanctuary, a marked contrast to the bustling city outside. Brunelleschi's architectural genius was evident in the perfectly balanced nave, the play of light and shadow creating a sense of peace and contemplation. We wandered through the basilica, marveling at the intricate details of the chapels and the serene atmosphere that permeated the space.

Next on our itinerary was the Cappelle Medicee, the Medici Chapels, a complex of opulent mausoleums that showcase the family's grandeur and artistic taste. The contrast between the simple exterior of San Lorenzo and the lavish interior of the chapels was striking. The Cappella dei Principi, the Chapel of the Princes, was particularly awe-inspiring, its vast dome adorned with colorful marble and semi-precious stones. The sheer scale of the chapel was overwhelming, a testament to the Medici's ambition and power. We explored the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, admiring the sculptures that showcased his mastery of the human form. The weight of history was palpable here, a reminder of the lives and legacies of the Medici rulers who shaped Florence's destiny. It’s interesting to think that these chapels, symbols of wealth and power, are ultimately places of rest.

For lunch, we ventured to Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a charming osteria known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a rustic ambiance that made us feel right at home. We shared a plate of handmade pici pasta with wild boar ragu, savoring the rich flavors of the Tuscan countryside. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the ragu hearty and flavorful, a true celebration of Italian culinary traditions. Hans, with his German appreciation for a good beer, enjoyed a local craft brew, while I opted for a glass of Chianti Classico, the perfect accompaniment to our meal. The staff were warm and welcoming, making us feel like regulars even though it was our first visit. It’s these kinds of experiences, the simple pleasure of good food and company, that make traveling so rewarding.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Galeria. While I was hoping to find a unique, locally made souvenir, it turned out to be more of a modern shopping mall. Still, it was a good opportunity to stretch our legs and do some window shopping. I did manage to find a small leather-bound journal, perfect for jotting down my travel reflections. It's always nice to have a physical reminder of my travels, something tangible to look back on.

Our final adventure of the day was the ascent of Giotto's Campanile, the bell tower of the Florence Cathedral. The climb was challenging, 414 steps winding upwards, but the promise of panoramic views kept us motivated. As we ascended, we paused at each level, catching our breath and admiring the intricate details of the tower's architecture. The higher we climbed, the more spectacular the views became, Florence unfolding beneath us like a Renaissance painting. Finally, we reached the top, and the vista was simply breathtaking. The Duomo, the Arno River, the rolling hills of Tuscany – all spread out before us in a stunning panorama. I felt a sense of accomplishment, having conquered the climb, and a sense of awe, witnessing the beauty of Florence from such a privileged vantage point. It was the perfect way to end our day, a moment of pure joy and wonder.

Dinner tonight was a truly special experience at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant located in a medieval tower. The ambiance was elegant and intimate, the service impeccable. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each dish was a work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that delighted our senses. From the delicate seafood appetizers to the rich, decadent desserts, every course was a masterpiece. It was a splurge, to be sure, but a worthwhile one, a celebration of our Florentine adventure. Thinking back to my cooking classes, I am always looking for inspiration and new ideas, and this dinner certainly provided plenty of that.

As I sit here now, writing in my new journal, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Florence has a way of captivating the soul, of transporting you to another time and place. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Piazzale Michelangelo for more panoramic views, the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, and the Giardino Bardini. I am particularly looking forward to the gardens; I have heard they are beautiful even in winter. Good night from Florence!
