Sunday Serenity in Florence
Ah, Sunday in Florence! After four days of immersing ourselves in the heart of the city, Hans and I decided to dedicate today to exploring the heights and hidden corners that offer a different perspective on this Renaissance gem. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can refresh the soul, especially when you’re sharing it with your favorite travel companion.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli, a Florentine institution that has been around since 1733. The pastries were delightful, and the coffee gave us the perfect boost for our morning adventure. I remember when I first moved to Germany, I missed the vibrant street food culture of Thailand. Places like Caffè Gilli remind me that every culture has its own unique and cherished culinary traditions.

Our first stop was Piazzale Michelangelo. We took a leisurely walk, enjoying the crisp January air. I was glad I had my comfortable walking shoes on! As we ascended, the city slowly unfolded beneath us, revealing its terracotta rooftops, the majestic Duomo, and the winding Arno River. Even in winter, Florence exudes a warmth that's hard to resist. When we reached the top, the view was simply breathtaking. It's amazing how even in January, the city still has its charm. There were fewer crowds than I imagine there would be in the summer, which allowed us to truly soak in the beauty.

The Piazzale was bustling with activity. Street performers were playing music, and artists were sketching the cityscape. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the architectural details of the buildings below, while I was captivated by the overall panorama. We took some photos, of course, wanting to capture the moment. It's interesting to see a replica of Michelangelo's David here, standing tall against the Florentine skyline. It made me think about the blend of art and history that permeates every corner of this city.
From Piazzale Michelangelo, we continued our ascent to the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte. The walk was invigorating, and the views along the way were equally rewarding. As we approached the basilica, its Romanesque façade stood out against the clear blue sky. The basilica, dedicated to Saint Miniato, Florence's first martyr, is a place of serenity and reflection. Inside, the intricate marble work and the peaceful atmosphere were a welcome change from the bustling city. The mosaics were stunning, especially the one in the apse depicting Christ Pantocrator.

“Florence is a tapestry woven with threads of art, history, and nature, each contributing to its unique and timeless allure.”
We spent some time wandering through the basilica, admiring the Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal, a masterpiece of Renaissance art. I found myself reflecting on the layers of history that have shaped this city, from the Roman era to the Renaissance and beyond. I thought of my own journey, from Lampang to Hannover, and how each place leaves an indelible mark on who we become.
After our visit to San Miniato, we decided to explore Giardino Bardini. This garden, located on a hillside, offers yet another perspective on Florence. The entrance ticket was cumulative with the Boboli Gardens, so we decided to take the opportunity to explore another beautiful space. As we entered, we were greeted by a grand baroque staircase, which led us to a belvedere with panoramic views of the city. The garden is divided into different sections, including an English garden and a farming area with olive trees. Even in January, the garden had its own charm. The bare trees and the winter light created a sense of tranquility and peace.

We wandered through the garden, discovering hidden pathways and enjoying the quiet atmosphere. I was particularly drawn to the wisteria-covered pergola, imagining how beautiful it must be in the spring when the wisteria is in full bloom. Hans, meanwhile, was intrigued by the farming area, with its ancient terraces and olive trees. It reminded him of his childhood in the German countryside. The Bardini Garden is a testament to the beauty of nature and the artistry of human design.
For lunch, we headed to Osteria dell'Enoteca, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The osteria is located near Palazzo Pitti, in the Oltrarno area. We started with crostini toscani, a classic Tuscan appetizer made with toasted bread and various toppings. For our main courses, Hans ordered the bistecca alla fiorentina, a grilled T-bone steak that is a Florentine specialty, and I opted for the tortelli, a type of pasta filled with cheese and spinach. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a perfect spot to relax and refuel after our morning adventures.

In the late afternoon, we made our way back towards the city center, stopping at The Hidden Pub for a pre-dinner drink. This pub, located slightly off the beaten path, has a unique and quirky atmosphere. It's known for its impressive selection of craft beers and its friendly staff. We ordered a couple of local Italian brews and enjoyed the lively ambiance. It was a fun and unexpected find, a reminder that Florence has more to offer than just art and history.

For dinner, we had reservations at Cuculia, a restaurant that offers contemporary cuisine in an elegant and informal setting. The restaurant is located in the Oltrarno neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and its vibrant culinary scene. We were greeted by the chef, Oliver Betancourt, who explained the menu to us. He incorporates influences from South America, the Caribbean, and France, creating dishes that are both innovative and delicious. I started with a pumpkin and carrot soup with cauliflower and beet foam, and for my main course, I ordered the sunflower pasta with goat cheese and honey. Hans had the ginger cod fish with saffron rose infusion. The presentation of the dishes was stunning, and the flavors were exquisite. It was a truly memorable dining experience.
