Day 3: Lanterns, Flavors, and Ancient Wonders: A Day in Hoi An's Embrace
Immerse yourself in Hoi An's ancient town, vibrant night market, and culinary delights. Discover the magic of Vietnam with Mali and Hans.
A Day of Ancient Charms
Today, Hoi An revealed its enchanting soul to Hans and me. From the first bite of breakfast to the mesmerizing glow of the night market, every moment was a vibrant tapestry woven with culture, history, and the irresistible flavors of Vietnam. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Hannover for a life filled with culinary adventures and shared moments with my beloved Hans.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. The open and airy setting, adorned with colorful lanterns, immediately set the tone for a day immersed in Hoi An's charm. I savored a steaming bowl of Pho, the fragrant broth warming me from the inside out. Hans opted for some Western fare, and we both agreed the restaurant lived up to its reputation for quick and effective service. Sipping my Vietnamese coffee, I felt a surge of excitement for the day ahead.

With Trip Essentials (minus the guidebook!) in tow, Hans and I ventured into the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town, with its well-preserved architecture and lantern-lit streets, was even more magical than I had imagined. The air was thick with humidity, but a gentle breeze made our exploration comfortable. October, it seems, offers a sweet spot – fewer crowds and a touch of romance in the air, despite the chance of rain.

We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the ochre-colored buildings, the intricate wooden facades, and the colorful lanterns that adorned every corner. It felt like stepping back in time, a journey into a world where Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese cultures converged. We explored ancient homes and lively markets, soaking up the unique blend of influences. I made sure to take many pictures as the colors were stunning and the light was perfect. I was so happy I had remembered my camera, one of my Trip Essentials.
Hoi An is more than just a place; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.
Lunchtime found us at Nhan's Kitchen, a family-run restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The staff welcomed us warmly, creating an atmosphere that felt both personal and relaxed. I ordered the aubergine with lemongrass, a dish bursting with fragrant, rich flavors. Hans opted for the pork ribs, which were tender and flavorful, falling off the bone with ease. Each dish was prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the culinary heritage of Vietnam. The prices were reasonable, making it an exceptional value.

After lunch, we indulged in some shopping at Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street). The streets were lined with shops selling everything from silk products and tailor-made clothing to handicrafts and souvenirs. I found a beautiful silk scarf, its vibrant colors reflecting the spirit of Hoi An. Hans, ever practical, had a shirt custom-made at one of the many tailor shops. The speed and skill of the tailors were truly impressive. As someone who appreciates quality and craftsmanship, I was delighted by the attention to detail and the personalized service. It reminded me of the importance of preserving traditional skills, a sentiment close to my heart, given my own work teaching Thai cuisine.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Hoi An Night Market. The market, located on Nguyen Hoang Street, was a dazzling spectacle of lights and colors. Thousands of lanterns illuminated the streets, creating a magical and ethereal atmosphere. The air was filled with the aromas of street food and the sounds of bargaining. We strolled through the vibrant stalls, admiring the handicrafts, silk clothing, and local souvenirs. It was a feast for the senses, a vibrant celebration of Vietnamese culture.

For dinner, we chose Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class, enticed by the promise of Vietnamese dishes presented in a Western style. The restaurant aimed to promote Vietnamese culinary culture to foreign visitors, and I was eager to experience their unique approach. The meal was a delightful fusion of flavors and presentation, a testament to the creativity and innovation of Vietnamese cuisine.

As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I reflected on the day's adventures. Hoi An had captivated us with its ancient charms, its vibrant culture, and its delectable cuisine. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this magical place with Hans. It was a day I would cherish forever, a reminder of the beauty and richness of the world, and the joy of sharing it with someone I love.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit My Son Sanctuary and Thanh Ha Pottery Village. My Son, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, promises a glimpse into the ancient Champa civilization. I am eager to explore the temple ruins and learn about the history of this fascinating culture. Then we will head to Thanh Ha Pottery Village, where we will witness the art of pottery making and perhaps even try our hand at the wheel. I am looking forward to experiencing the craftsmanship and creativity of the local artisans. Afterwards, we plan to visit The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An for a nightcap. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings!
The weather in Hoi An in October is generally warm, with average daytime temperatures around 83°F (28°C) and nighttime temperatures around 76°F (24°C). There is a chance of rain, so it's a good idea to pack lightweight, quick-drying clothes and a raincoat. The humidity is high, but gentle breezes help moderate the conditions. Overall, October is a suitable time to travel to Hoi An, offering a tranquil experience and fewer tourists. I am glad we came in October as it is also the time for the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional occasion filled with lantern parades and cultural performances.
P.S. I almost forgot! I was so engrossed in the beauty of Hoi An that I nearly forgot to buy a travel guidebook. It seems my Trip Essentials Forgotten list might need some attention tomorrow!
