Day 3: Beneath the Surface: Exploring Iceland's Hidden Gems
Delving into the mystical allure of Snæfellsjökull National Park: from lava caves to tranquil lakes and charming local crafts.
A Day of Discovery
Today was all about venturing off the beaten path and uncovering the secrets hidden within Snæfellsjökull National Park. It’s amazing how much a single day can reveal when you’re open to exploring the lesser-known corners of a place. With Hans by my side, I knew today would be filled with memorable moments and breathtaking discoveries.
Sker Restaurant in Ólafsvík. The town was still waking up, the air crisp and clean. I ordered a traditional Icelandic breakfast, while Hans opted for something a bit more familiar. Sker is known for its stunning views and fresh ingredients. Luckily, the restaurant was close to the harbour, which allowed us to see the water as we ate. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was cozy, a perfect start to our day. I savored every bite of the vegan option with oumph in it. It was delicious and filling. It reminded me of the importance of starting the day right, no matter where you are in the world. After breakfast, we set off towards our first destination: Bárðarlaug.

Experience the serene beauty of Bárðarlaug, a hidden gem in Hellnar, Iceland, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and unique geological formations.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world.
Bárðarlaug, we drove to Arnarstapi for lunch at FRISTA Food Truck. I had heard so much about their fish and chips, and I was eager to try it for myself. The food truck was easy to spot, with its vibrant colors and inviting atmosphere. The owner was incredibly friendly, greeting us with a warm smile and a genuine enthusiasm. I ordered the fish and chips, while Hans opted for a chicken quesadilla. We found a picnic table nearby and savored our meal while taking in the stunning coastal views. The fish was incredibly fresh, with a crispy, well-seasoned batter that perfectly complemented the flaky fish inside. It was some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, and I could see why it was so highly recommended. As we ate, we chatted with other travelers, sharing stories and recommendations. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel: good food, good company, and breathtaking scenery.

Vatnshellir Cave. This 8,000-year-old lava tube is located in the heart of Snæfellsjökull National Park, and I was excited to explore its depths. We joined a guided tour, donned helmets and flashlights, and descended into the cave. As we ventured deeper, the temperature dropped, and the darkness became all-encompassing. Our guide, Þór, was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the cave’s formation and the local folklore surrounding it. He pointed out various rock formations, highlighting the different textures and colors of the lava. At one point, he had us turn off our flashlights, plunging us into complete darkness. It was an eerie but exhilarating experience, a reminder of the raw power of nature. As someone who teaches cooking classes, I am used to being in control of my environment, to be in a lighted room. Being in this dark cave was a new experience for me. Vatnshellir Cave was formed during a volcanic eruption. As the outer layer of lava cooled and solidified, the molten core continued to flow, eventually leaving behind the hollow tube that we can explore today. The cave stretches 200 meters in length and reaches depths of up to 35 meters underground. Inside, you'll see twisted rock formations, vivid colors caused by different minerals, and evidence of ancient lava flow patterns.

Prjónaklúbburinn, a local knitting shop. I love finding unique, handcrafted items when I travel, and I had heard that this shop was a treasure trove of Icelandic woolens. As someone who enjoys knitting, I was excited to see what they had to offer. The shop was small but cozy, filled with colorful yarns and beautifully knitted sweaters, hats, and scarves. The owner, a kind woman with a warm smile, greeted us and shared stories about the local knitting traditions. I purchased a beautiful woolen scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Snæfellsjökull National Park. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local artisans, of preserving traditional crafts for future generations.

Hlaðan Veitingahús for dinner. This restaurant, located in the Lava Resort Hotel, is known for its Icelandic cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I was looking forward to trying some traditional dishes. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. I ordered the lamb chops, while Hans opted for the catch of the day. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the catch of the day was incredibly fresh. As we ate, we reflected on our day, sharing our favorite moments and laughing at our misadventures. It was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, of savoring the simple moments in life. Hlaðan also offers vegan options such as vegan tartare, tofu steak, burger and ice cream.
