A Day of Coastal Exploration

The second day of our Icelandic adventure in Snæfellsjökull National Park was nothing short of spectacular. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the dramatic coastal scenery and savoring the local culinary delights of Arnarstapi. The crisp November air and the promise of breathtaking views made me eager to start our exploration.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Harbour Cafe. It was a cozy spot, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and Icelandic pastries filled the air. I opted for the traditional Plokkfiskur (fish stew) with a twist, and Hans had the smoked salmon. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint.

The Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint was our first stop, and it immediately captivated us with its raw beauty. The cliffs were dramatic, and the unique rock formations rising from the waves created a mesmerizing scene. It was easy to see why this area is renowned for its panoramic views. I couldn't resist snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture the essence of this stunning landscape. The wind was bracing, a reminder that winter was approaching, but the views were worth braving the chill.

As we walked along the coastal trail, the sounds of seabirds filled the air. Gulls and other seabirds nested on the cliffs, adding a vibrant touch to the natural scenery. I spotted a few seals basking on the rocks below, much to my delight. The trail was well-maintained, making it accessible for all ages, and we took our time, soaking in the serene atmosphere.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

Next, we ventured towards the Stone Bridge, a natural arch formation that spans part of the cliff. The walk from the Arnarstapi harbor parking lot was short, about 10 minutes, and took us westward along the coastal trail. As we approached the Stone Bridge, its grandeur became apparent. The natural arch against the backdrop of the sea was a sight to behold. We spent some time simply admiring the bridge and the powerful waves crashing against the rocks below. The contrast of the black lava rocks and the deep blue water was striking, providing perfect photo opportunities. I imagined capturing this scene during the golden hour, with the light highlighting the textures of the arch.

For lunch, we decided to try Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa, a restaurant known for its home-made Icelandic food and personal, homey atmosphere. It was located in the old community house and had an information center. Unfortunately, it was closed unless upon request, which was a disappointment. Instead, we opted for a quick bite at FRISTA Food Truck Arnarstapi, enjoying some fish and chips with a view of the coastline.

After lunch, we decided to explore the charming village of Arnarstapi itself. The village has a rich history, dating back to the Danish trade monopoly, and is filled with folklore and legends. We strolled through the area, admiring the historic buildings and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. I learned about Bárður Snæfellsás, the half-human, half-ogre guardian of Snæfellsjökull, whose saga is deeply intertwined with the region. The statue of Bárður, created by Ragnar Kjartansson, added a touch of mystique to the landscape.

As the afternoon progressed, we sought refuge from the November chill at The Freezer Hostel, Apartments & Culture Centre for a drink. Though primarily a hostel, it also functions as a cultural center, hosting movie nights, concerts, and other events. It was a quirky and welcoming place, filled with art and a lively atmosphere. We enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some fellow travelers, exchanging stories and recommendations. The Freezer is situated inside a renovated fish factory in Rif, a short drive from Arnarstapi. It seemed like a hub for those seeking a unique Icelandic experience.

For dinner, we had made reservations at Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður, a short drive from Arnarstapi. The restaurant is known for its stunning views and its commitment to using local ingredients. The drive to Grundarfjörður was scenic, with the landscape bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. As we arrived at Bjargarsteinn Mathús, we were immediately struck by its charming location, perched on a coastal ridge with panoramic views of the mountains and the ocean.

The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with large windows that allowed us to soak in the breathtaking scenery. We were seated at a table with a perfect view, and the warm ambiance made us feel right at home. Bjargarsteinn Mathús focuses on preparing meals from scratch, emphasizing local ingredients and innovative culinary creations. The chefs, Gunnar Garðarsson and Miroslav Honek, have crafted a menu that changes with the seasons, reflecting the best of what the region has to offer.

I opted for the fresh seafood, while Hans chose the tender lamb. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the lamb was cooked to perfection. We paired our meal with a local craft beer, enhancing the dining experience. The service was impeccable, and the staff was knowledgeable and passionate about the food they served.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the dramatic cliffs of Arnarstapi to the cozy atmosphere of Bjargarsteinn Mathús, every moment had been filled with beauty and wonder. I felt a deep connection to this enchanting landscape, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience its magic.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Bárðarlaug and Vatnshellir Cave [If tomorrow is the last day of the trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I am particularly excited about Vatnshellir Cave, as I've heard it offers a unique glimpse into Iceland's volcanic history. We'll also stop by Prjónaklúbburinn, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs [If tomorrow is the last day of the trip, merge in “Trip end”].

Back at our campsite, I journaled about the day's adventures, Hans reviewed the photos he had taken. The wind howled outside, but inside our tent, we were warm and content, already dreaming of the adventures that awaited us on day three.

Snæfellsjökull National Park continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I am excited to share more of this journey with you all!
