Journey's End, But Not the End of the Memories

As our nine-day adventure in Snæfellsjökull National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared. Today was a tapestry of unique encounters, from exploring the depths of a lava cave to savoring local flavors and discovering charming Icelandic crafts. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing our time here is ending, but the memories we’ve made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarbær. The restaurant, located near the camping site, offered a cozy atmosphere. I enjoyed some local seafood with a unique touch. Hans opted for one of their pizzas. Fuelled up, we set off to explore Lýsuhóll, a place known for its horse farm and unique natural features.

At Lýsuhóll, the landscape was breathtaking. Although we didn't partake in a horse riding tour this time, I was fascinated to learn that they offer riding tours along the beach and lava fields. I made a mental note to return in the future for that experience. We took a leisurely stroll, soaking in the views of the glacier and the surrounding mountains. It was a peaceful start to our final day in the park.

Next on our itinerary was the Vatnshellir Cave. This lava cave, formed thousands of years ago, promised an adventure into the depths of Iceland's volcanic past. As we descended into the cave, the temperature noticeably dropped. I was glad I had my warm layers on. The guide provided helmets and flashlights, essential for navigating the darkness.

Inside Vatnshellir, we were surrounded by unique lava formations and vibrant colors. The guide explained how the cave was formed by a volcanic eruption from the Purkhólar crater family. The lower part of the cave, accessible via a long, narrow staircase, was particularly impressive. The silence and darkness were profound, heightening our senses. It was a truly otherworldly experience, walking through a place hidden from the outside world for millennia.

Emerging from the cave, we drove to Grundarfjörður. Our mission was to visit Kirkjufell knitting. I had heard about this charming shop. It features locally crafted garments that reflect the heritage of Icelandic knitting. The store was a treasure trove of beautifully designed sweaters, hats, and scarves. I purchased a cozy wool scarf as a souvenir. It will remind me of our time in Snæfellsjökull.

For lunch, we decided to try Stapinn in Arnarstapi. This family-run restaurant is known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I opted for the fish and chips. Hans chose the lamb soup. The views of the surrounding cliffs and ocean added to the dining experience. Stapinn also emphasizes sustainability, which I appreciated.

Our final dinner in Snæfellsnes was at Sker Restaurant in Ólafsvík. This restaurant is known for its varied menu and use of fresh ingredients. The restaurant was cozy and offered amazing views. I ordered the pan-seared cod fillet, which was cooked to perfection. Hans enjoyed one of their pizzas. It was a delightful end to our culinary explorations in the park.

As we drove back to our campsite for the last time, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Snæfellsjökull National Park had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences. From the majestic glacier to the hidden lava caves and charming local shops, every moment was a treasure.

Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back to Reykjavik, filled with memories and photographs that will last a lifetime. This trip to Snæfellsjökull has not only deepened my appreciation for Iceland's stunning landscapes but also reinforced the joy of sharing these experiences with Hans. As we prepare to leave, I know that a part of me will always remain in this mystical corner of the world.

Until next time, Snæfellsnes. Thank you for the memories.
