Echoes of History and Hidden Paths

Today was a day of whispers, of feeling the presence of those who came before us in this dramatic landscape. Snæfellsjökull National Park continues to surprise and enchant, revealing layers of history and natural beauty with every step. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with the past and discover hidden corners of our world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Langaholt & Restaurant. It’s a family-run place, and you can feel the warmth and care in every corner. Keli, the host, has been running the hotel since 2006, and he makes you feel right at home. The homemade bread was especially delicious, and the view of the glacier in the distance was the perfect start to our adventures. I even managed to snag the last piece of skyr cake! Hans, of course, had his usual black coffee, ready to embrace the day's discoveries.

Fueled up and ready, we set off to Gufuskálar. This place is steeped in maritime history, once a bustling fishing station. As we wandered through the area, I could almost hear the echoes of fishermen from centuries past. The landscape is rugged, with remnants of old huts blending into the lava fields. It's easy to miss them, which somehow adds to the mystique.

We explored the remains of the old fishing station, trying to imagine what life must have been like for those who braved the harsh seas. The wind was strong, and the waves crashed against the shore, a constant reminder of the power of nature. Hans was in his element, snapping photos of the dramatic coastline. He always appreciates the raw beauty of places like this. I was fascinated by the Írskrabrunnur, or the Well of the Irish, a freshwater source with sixteen steps leading down to the water. It was lost for decades but rediscovered and cleaned in 1989. Standing there, I couldn't help but think about the Irish settlers who once relied on this well for their survival.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Gufuskálar, we sought out the National Park Secret Entrance. It’s not heavily advertised, which makes finding it all the more rewarding. The drive there was beautiful, with the landscape unfolding before us in all its November glory. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea and the earth.

The Secret Entrance felt like stepping into another world. The park is less commercialized than other areas, offering a more intimate connection with nature. We hiked along well-maintained trails, marveling at the diverse ecosystems – from valleys to rugged cliffs. I kept an eye out for local wildlife, hoping to spot some of the bird species that nest in the cliffs. Though we didn't see any today, the tranquility of the park was reward enough.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Arnarstapi for lunch at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. The restaurant is part of the Arnarstapi Center hotel, which also offers rooms, apartments, cottages, and a campsite. The Snjófell Restaurant combines contemporary design with cozy Icelandic charm. The large windows offer stunning views of Mount Stapafell. I enjoyed a hearty bowl of fish soup, while Hans opted for the classic fish and chips. We shared a salted caramel cake, which was sinfully delicious.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Útgerð in Bar for a quick drink. It was a cozy spot, perfect for warming up after a day of exploring. We chatted with some locals, learning more about the area and its history. It's always the unexpected encounters that make a trip memorable.

For dinner, we drove to Grundarfjörður to Bjargarsteinn Mathús. This restaurant is a true gem, with stunning views of Kirkjufell and the fjord. The building itself is charming, with tables set impeccably. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the service was excellent. We savored fresh seafood dishes, prepared with local ingredients. I tried the Plokkfiskur, a traditional Icelandic fish stew, while Hans had the grilled cod. Both were outstanding.

Before heading back to our campsite, we took a walk along the harbor in Grundarfjörður. The sky was clear, and the stars were beginning to appear. The air was still and quiet, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of the waves against the boats. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lýsuhóll and Vatnshellir Cave. I’m particularly excited about the cave, as I’ve heard it’s an incredible experience. We’ll also stop by Kirkjufell knitting to pick up a souvenir or two.

As I sit here in our tent, writing in my travel journal, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Snæfellsjökull National Park has exceeded all my expectations. It’s a place of breathtaking beauty, rich history, and endless adventure. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
