Seaside Discoveries in Mols Bjerge

Today was all about embracing the coastal charm of Mols Bjerge National Park. From serene beaches to dramatic cliffs, the day was filled with natural beauty and delightful discoveries. It's amazing how much diversity this park holds, each corner offering a new perspective and a fresh appreciation for the Danish landscape.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Mols Bjerge in Knebel. It's becoming a bit of a tradition to start our days here, and the familiar faces of the staff make it feel like a home away from home. I opted for a classic Danish pastry and a strong coffee, while Andreas enjoyed a traditional ‘morgenmad’ with eggs and bacon. Sophie, of course, chose pancakes – a surefire way to start her day with a smile. After breakfast, we set off for Ahl Strand.

Ahl Strand greeted us with its tranquil atmosphere and soft, inviting sands. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and the sun shining just enough to make the water sparkle. I was so glad we remembered to pack the sunscreen this time! We spent a relaxing morning strolling along the shore, collecting seashells, and simply enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the waves. Sophie, ever the adventurer, was fascinated by the large sandbanks that appeared at low tide, perfect for building sandcastles. Andreas, as always, was in charge of construction, and soon Sophie was proudly displaying her newly built fortress. I took the opportunity to sit back with my book, soaking in the sun and the stunning views of the Kattegat Sea.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After a refreshing morning at Ahl Strand, we decided to have lunch at MolsCafeen. This charming café is known for its delicious Italian dishes and cozy atmosphere. We sat outside, enjoying the beautiful view while we savored our meals. I chose a light pasta dish with fresh prawns, while Andreas went for a hearty burger. Sophie, predictably, ordered pizza – her go-to meal no matter where we are. The food was delicious, and the relaxed ambiance of the café made it the perfect spot to recharge before our next adventure.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we drove to Jernhatten in the afternoon. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the rolling hills of Mols Bjerge National Park. As we approached Jernhatten, the landscape became more dramatic, with steep cliffs and rugged coastline. Jernhatten, also known as “The Iron Hat,” is a protected hill and viewpoint that stands approximately 49 meters above sea level. The walk from the parking area to the top of the hill was short but invigorating, with a well-maintained footpath leading us through a mix of forest and open meadow.

Reaching the summit of Jernhatten, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Kattegat Sea and the surrounding landscape. The island of Hjelm was clearly visible in the distance, and we could see the coastline stretching out in both directions. The unique flora and fauna of Jernhatten were also fascinating, with wind-stunted beech trees and rare plants that thrive in the area’s microclimate. Sophie was particularly intrigued by the twisted, gnarled trees, which she declared looked like something out of a fairy tale. Andreas, ever the history buff, pointed out the remnants of old fortifications, remnants from the English Wars in the early 19th century near Ahl Plantation.

As we descended from Jernhatten, we decided to take a walk along the beach in a northerly direction. The coastline here is stunning, with kildevæld (natural springs) and wind-battered beech trees creating a truly idyllic scene. The combination of the rugged coastline and the clear blue waters of the Kattegat made for a memorable experience. We even spotted a few divers exploring the underwater stone reefs, which are known to be some of the most interesting in Denmark.

After our coastal hike, we were ready for a bit of relaxation. We made our way to S'vinbar, a local wine bar known for its extensive selection of wines. This cozy spot is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, and it’s easy to see why. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable about wine. I decided to try a glass of local Danish wine, while Andreas opted for a German Riesling. Sophie, of course, stuck with sparkling apple juice. Sipping our drinks, we reflected on the day’s adventures and planned our activities for tomorrow.

Dinner tonight was at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols. This restaurant is renowned for its focus on local ingredients and traditional Danish cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We started with a selection of appetizers, including smoked salmon and pickled herring. For the main course, I chose the roasted duck, while Andreas went for the traditional ‘frikadeller’ (Danish meatballs). Sophie, surprisingly, decided to try the fish of the day, which she declared was “delicious!” The meal was a perfect end to a perfect day, and we left feeling full, content, and grateful for the wonderful experiences we had shared.

As we drove back to our accommodation, we talked about our plans for tomorrow. We’re scheduled to visit Ellemandsbjerget top and Kalø Castle. I’m particularly excited about Kalø Castle, as I’ve read about its rich history and stunning location. Sophie is eager to explore the castle grounds, while Andreas is looking forward to learning more about its medieval past. We also plan to stop by the Royal Copenhagen Outlet for a bit of souvenir shopping. It’s our last day in Mols Bjerge National Park, and we want to make the most of it.

Back at our cabin, I’m sitting by the window, listening to the gentle sounds of the forest. The stars are out tonight, and the sky is incredibly clear. I feel a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that we’ve had another wonderful day in this beautiful part of the world. Mols Bjerge National Park has truly captured our hearts, and I know we’ll be back again someday.

Tomorrow marks the end of our family trip to Mols Bjerge National Park, and I am already feeling a tinge of sadness. We have breakfast scheduled at Restaurant Moment. I’ve heard great things about their brunch menu, and I’m looking forward to trying it out. After breakfast, we plan to visit Ellemandsbjerget top, a scenic viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the park. I’m hoping to capture some stunning photographs from up there.

After Ellemandsbjerget, we’ll head to Kalø Castle, a historic fortress located on a small island. I’m excited to explore the castle ruins and learn more about its fascinating past. Sophie is particularly interested in the castle’s legends and ghost stories, while Andreas is keen to delve into its architectural details. In the afternoon, we’ll make a stop at the Royal Copenhagen Outlet for some last-minute souvenir shopping. I’m hoping to find a few special items to remind us of our time in Denmark. Finally, we’ll have a farewell dinner at MolsCafeen, savoring one last meal in this charming national park. I can’t wait to share all the details with you tomorrow!
