A Day of Discovery in Mols Bjerge

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Mols Bjerge National Park. We traded the familiar comforts of Bonn for the rugged beauty of Denmark, and it was a decision we wouldn't regret. From Viking history to breathtaking trails, Mols Bjerge offered a day filled with exploration and connection with nature. It reminded me of why I started this blog – to share these transformative experiences with all of you!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MolsCafeen. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the cozy space. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of hiking. Andreas opted for a traditional Danish pastry, while Sophie and I enjoyed some yogurt with local berries. It’s always a treat to start the day with the flavors of the region.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore Dragsmur. I had read about its Viking history, and I was eager to see it for myself. As we arrived, the landscape opened up before us, revealing a stunning coastal scene where history and nature intertwined. The gentle sea breeze carried the scent of heather and wildflowers. Sophie was immediately captivated by the clear waters, perfect for kayaking and snorkeling. Andreas, ever the history enthusiast, shared stories of how the Vikings used to drag their ships across this narrow isthmus to avoid sailing around the Helgenæs peninsula.

The beauty of nature and the echoes of history – that's what makes Mols Bjerge so special.

After soaking in the history and coastal beauty of Dragsmur, we embarked on a hike along the famous Mols Bjerge stien. This trail, stretching for 80 kilometers, is divided into four day stages, each offering unique natural and cultural experiences. We chose a section of the Bjergetapen, known for its focus on landscape, nature, and culture. The trail wound through rolling hills, lush forests, and open heathland.

Sophie, with her boundless energy, led the way, pointing out various plants and insects. Andreas and I followed at a more leisurely pace, taking in the panoramic views. The landscape reminded me of the Dutch countryside back in Hattem, but with a unique Danish twist. The fresh air and the sound of birdsong filled our lungs and souls. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

As we hiked, we stumbled upon several Bronze Age burial mounds, a testament to the area's rich history. Andreas explained how these mounds were used for ancient burial rituals, connecting us to the people who had walked this land thousands of years ago. It was a humbling experience to stand on these historic sites, imagining the lives of those who came before us.

By lunchtime, our stomachs were rumbling again. We decided to stop at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols for a well-deserved meal. This family-run restaurant is known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional Danish cuisine. We sat in their cozy courtyard, surrounded by blooming flowers and the gentle hum of bees. I ordered the *smørrebrød*, an open-faced sandwich with various toppings, while Andreas chose the *frikadeller*, Danish meatballs. Sophie opted for a fresh salad with local greens and herbs. Each dish was a celebration of the region's flavors, prepared with love and care.

After lunch, we made a quick stop at Mols Super, LetKøb to pick up some essentials. I wanted to grab a few local snacks to bring back to Bonn and some ingredients for a small picnic tomorrow. The supermarket was filled with Danish delicacies, from artisanal cheeses to freshly baked pastries. It was a treat to explore the local products and chat with the friendly staff.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Restaurant Moment for dinner. This vegetarian restaurant is renowned for its sustainable practices and innovative cuisine. The restaurant is located in Friland, a pioneering village focused on sustainable living. The building itself is constructed with sustainable materials, including straw bricks. We were greeted by the warm and welcoming staff, who showed us to our table.

The menu at Restaurant Moment is based on the season's harvest, with many ingredients sourced from their own garden. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of small, artfully presented dishes. Each dish was a surprise, bursting with unique flavors and textures. The chefs worked magic with vegetables, creating dishes that were both delicious and visually stunning. Even Sophie, who is sometimes a picky eater, was impressed by the creativity and taste of the food.

The experience at Restaurant Moment was more than just a meal; it was an education in sustainability and culinary artistry. They recycle water, ferment food waste into compost, and use sustainable technologies throughout their operations. It was inspiring to see how a restaurant could be both environmentally responsible and incredibly delicious.

As we drove back to our accommodation, we reflected on the day's adventures. We had hiked through history, tasted local flavors, and connected with nature. Mols Bjerge had exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. It reminded me of the importance of sustainable living and the power of travel to broaden our horizons.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ahl Strand and Jernhatten, continuing our journey through this enchanting region. I am particularly excited to see the coastal landscapes and learn more about the local flora and fauna. And perhaps we’ll find a cozy spot at Svinbar for a relaxing evening drink.

Until then, I bid you goodnight from Mols Bjerge, a place where nature and history come alive.

It’s been a day filled with wonderful sights and experiences. I am so glad I can share this with you all!
