Day 8: A Day of Discovery in Takayama: Markets, Museums, and Culinary Delights
Explore Takayama's historic charm with vibrant markets, retro museums, and delicious Hida cuisine for an unforgettable experience.
Takayama's Treasures Unveiled
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Takayama, a city that effortlessly blends history with everyday life. It's amazing how much character is packed into this place, and I was eager to soak it all in with my friends. We set out early, ready to explore the markets, museums, and culinary corners of this charming city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yamamotoya, a local spot known for its traditional Japanese fare. Fuelled up, we headed straight for Takayama Jinya, a place that offered a tangible connection to Japan's past.

Stepping Back in Time at Takayama Jinya
Takayama Jinya is the only remaining ancient government office in Japan, a complex that once served as the local administrative center under the direct control of the Edo Shogunate. Built initially in 1615, it functioned as a government office for nearly 300 years across four dynasties. Wandering through its rooms, I could almost hear the echoes of officials collecting taxes, scribes writing documents, and judges hearing cases.
The architecture itself was fascinating. The wave pattern and Mamuki Rabbits on the pillars were unique decorations. Each room was well-preserved and filled with artifacts, from ancient books to cooking utensils, offering a glimpse into the lives of the officials who once worked and lived here. I was particularly intrigued by the Law Court and Interrogation Room, imagining the weighty decisions that were made within those walls.
Takayama Jinya is a powerful reminder of Japan's rich history, a place where the past feels very much alive.
The garden, though not in its spring Sakura glory, was still a peaceful spot to reflect on the history we had just absorbed. It was easy to see why the Michelin Green Guide Japan considered it Worth A Detour.
A Stroll Through Jinya-mae Morning Market
Discover the vibrant Jinya-mae Morning Markets in Takayama, where fresh local produce meets authentic Japanese culture in a lively market atmosphere.
Just outside Takayama Jinya was the Jinya-mae Morning Market, one of Japan's three great morning markets. The market buzzed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the region's fresh produce and crafts.
The stalls were filled with local agricultural products, from fresh vegetables and fruits to flowers and rice. I couldn't resist trying the local apples, which were as juicy and sweet as promised. We also sampled Jinya dumplings, grilled and served with a savory soy sauce. It was a perfect opportunity to feel the pulse of Takayama and connect with the local vendors.
Andreas picked up a Sarubobo doll, a local mascot said to bring joy to families, especially pregnant women. He thought it would be a nice gift for Sophie, a little something to remind her of our travels. Though she's not pregnant, of course!
Nostalgia at the Hida Takayama Retro Museum
Discover the charm of Japan's past at the Hida Takayama Retro Museum, where vintage toys and memorabilia create a nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages.
Next on our itinerary was the Hida Takayama Retro Museum, a place that promised a trip down memory lane. The museum is dedicated to the Showa era (mid-1920s to 1989), showcasing vintage toys, classic games, and nostalgic artifacts.
Stepping inside was like entering a time capsule. Retro vending machines, childhood toys, and Showa movie posters lined the walls. It was fascinating to see how much had changed, and yet how many things remained the same. The museum was interactive, allowing us to play retro games and enjoy snacks from simpler times. I even tried my hand at a vintage pachinko machine, though I quickly realized I wasn't as skilled as I thought I was!
The Hida Takayama Retro Museum isn't just a collection of old items; it's an immersive experience that evokes a sense of nostalgia and wonder. It's a reminder of a different era, a time when life seemed a bit simpler and the world a bit more innocent.
A Culinary Journey Through Takayama
After a morning of exploration, it was time to indulge in Takayama's culinary offerings. For lunch, we chose Soba dojo Restaurant, known for its traditional soba noodles. The soba was delicious, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting.

We savored every bite, from the Hida beef to the local vegetables. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Looking Ahead
As I write this, I'm already thinking about tomorrow's adventure. We plan to visit the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum and the Gokayama Folklore Museum. It's hard to believe this trip is coming to an end. One more day to soak in the beauty and culture of Japan, and I intend to make the most of it. I'm especially looking forward to exploring the Gokayama Folklore Museum, as I'm eager to learn more about the traditional ways of life in this region.
Takayama has captured my heart with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can step back in time, connect with locals, and indulge in culinary delights. If you're looking for an authentic Japanese experience, Takayama should definitely be on your list.
Tomorrow, we leave Shirakawa-go and head back towards Tokyo, making a stop at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. It feels like just yesterday we arrived, ready to explore. I'm already anticipating the memories we'll make on our final day.
