Amboise: A Day of Royal History and Renaissance Dreams

Today, the Loire Valley continued to weave its magic, transporting us back in time to the heart of French royalty and the Renaissance. With Andreas and Sophie by my side, I was eager to explore the historical depths and architectural beauty of Amboise. It’s days like these that remind me why I love sharing our travels – to inspire others to seek out these pockets of history and beauty, and to experience the unique charm that each destination holds.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at the Restaurant du Château de Rochecotte. The setting was as charming as a fairytale, nestled in an 18th-century château overlooking the Loire Valley. The staff were incredibly attentive, and the breakfast buffet offered a royal spread to fuel our adventures. As a floral designer, I was particularly enchanted by the beautiful terraces and gardens surrounding the château, filled with vibrant spring blooms. It was the perfect start to a day steeped in history and beauty.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the Château Royal d'Amboise. Perched majestically overlooking the Loire River, the château commanded a spectacular view of the valley below. As we wandered through the royal apartments, I imagined the lives of the French kings and queens who once called this place home. The architecture was a stunning blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, reflecting the castle's evolution over the centuries. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, where Leonardo da Vinci is buried. The intricate details and historical significance of the chapel left a lasting impression on us all.

The beauty of the Loire Valley lies not only in its grand châteaux but also in the intimate stories whispered within their walls.

The gardens of Château Royal d'Amboise were a true delight. As we strolled through the meticulously landscaped grounds, I couldn't help but marvel at the vibrant colors and fragrant scents of the spring blossoms. The Jardin de Naples, with its Mediterranean species and terracotta pots, was a particular highlight, offering a colorful and aromatic experience. Andreas enjoyed the panoramic views of the Loire River, while Sophie explored every nook and cranny, discovering hidden pathways and secret gardens. The terraced design provided a unique perspective, blending nature and architecture seamlessly.

After immersing ourselves in the royal history of Château Royal d'Amboise, we ventured to Château Gaillard, drawn by its unique story as the cradle of the Italian Renaissance in France. Built in 1496, this château was inspired by the refined living that Charles VIII fell in love with during his Italian campaign. The harmonious Renaissance-style gardens, laid out by master gardener Dom Pacello, were a sight to behold. As a floral designer, I was especially captivated by the first orange trees in France, a testament to Pacello's innovative gardening techniques. Sophie enjoyed exploring the 15-hectare estate, rediscovering forgotten corners and buried treasures.

The King's Gardens at Château Gaillard were more than just a garden; they were an initiatory and sensory experience, a dive into the lost paradise of the Italian-French Renaissance. The orange tree conservatory, with its 300 trees and 85 varieties, was a highlight. We strolled through the seven paths of Paradise on the hillside, explored the centuries-old forest, and cooled off at the Gallo-Roman spring. The estate was full of underground treasures, such as the olfactory grotto and the mysterious devil's cave, adding an element of intrigue to our visit.

For lunch, we chose Auberge du Prieuré, a restaurant offering a culinary journey back to the Middle Ages. The ambiance was enchanting, with stone walls, exposed beams, and candlelight chandeliers. The staff, dressed in medieval attire, added to the immersive experience. Each dish was a surprising delight, blending spices and local products in a way that transported us back in time. The unique setting and delicious food made for a memorable meal.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Restaurant le 36. Located in a charming 18th-century building, the restaurant offered a gastronomic experience with a focus on French cuisine. The setting, overlooking the Loire River, was enchanting, and the service was impeccable. The menu featured a range of refined dishes, blending classic French techniques with exotic flavors. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the Château de Saumur and Musée du Champignon, further delving into the cultural and historical richness of the Loire Valley. I’m also excited to visit La ronde des rêves, a local shop, to perhaps find some unique souvenirs to remind us of our time here.

Today was a beautiful blend of history, art, and nature, perfectly encapsulating the charm of the Loire Valley. I feel so grateful to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's these moments of discovery and connection that make travel so rewarding, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings!

The atmosphere here in the Loire Valley is so relaxing. I think I'll get a good night's sleep tonight.

I've decided to try to sketch more of what I see. Maybe I can incorporate some of that into my floral designs back in Bonn.

I'm also thinking of trying to find some local lavender to bring back home. I think it would be a nice reminder of this trip.

I'm so glad we decided to come here. It's been such a wonderful experience. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
