From delving into the park's history and ecology at the Casa del Parc de Boí to navigating the breathtaking trails of Circ de Colomers, every moment was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo adventure. My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Les Ares in Boí. The mountain air had already sharpened my appetite, and the thought of the day ahead filled me with anticipation. After a satisfying meal, I set off to the Casa del Parc de Boí.
The Casa del Parc de Boí isn't just a visitor center; it's a portal into the heart of the park. As someone with a keen interest in sustainable living and the environment, I was eager to learn more about the local ecosystem. The center is well-organized, with exhibits catering to all ages. I found myself engrossed in the displays about the park's diverse flora and fauna, its geological history, and the ongoing conservation efforts. It was fascinating to learn about the unique challenges and triumphs of preserving such a precious natural space. I even picked up a few tips for spotting local wildlife, armed with my camera and notebook.
The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, readily answering my questions and offering insights into the best hiking trails. They shared stories of the park’s history, including the impact of the ice age on the landscape and the traditional agricultural practices that have shaped the region. It was a reminder that this park isn't just a place of natural beauty; it's a living testament to the interplay between humans and nature.
To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.
Leaving the Casa del Parc de Boí, I felt better equipped for the adventures that lay ahead. The center provided a solid foundation for understanding the park's ecological significance, enhancing my appreciation for the landscapes I was about to explore. It was a perfect blend of education and inspiration, setting the stage for the physical challenges of the afternoon.
My next destination was the Circ de Colomers, a renowned hiking area known for its stunning glacial lakes and rugged peaks. The drive to the trailhead was scenic, winding through valleys dotted with charming villages and framed by towering mountains. As I approached the trailhead, the air grew crisper, and the anticipation mounted.

The hike began gently enough, gradually ascending through lush meadows and fragrant pine forests. The trail was well-marked, but I made sure to consult my local maps to ensure I was on the right path. I had forgotten my portable charger, so I was trying to preserve my phone battery as much as possible. As I climbed higher, the trees began to thin, revealing glimpses of the majestic peaks that encircled the cirque. The views were already breathtaking, but I knew the best was yet to come.
The trail grew steeper as I approached the first of the Colomers lakes. The landscape transformed into a rocky, alpine terrain, with granite boulders scattered across the hillsides. The air was thin, and each step required a bit more effort, but the stunning vistas spurred me on. Finally, I reached the first lake, Estany de Colomers, and was immediately captivated by its beauty. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding peaks like a mirror. The silence was profound, broken only by the gentle lapping of the water against the shore.
I continued along the trail, passing several more lakes, each with its unique charm. Some were small and secluded, nestled among the rocks, while others were larger and more expansive, offering panoramic views of the cirque. I paused at each one, taking photos and jotting down notes in my notebook. As a floral designer, I found inspiration in the vibrant colors of the alpine flowers and the intricate patterns of the rock formations.
The hike around the Circ de Colomers isn't particularly difficult, but it does require a reasonable level of fitness. The altitude can be challenging, and there are some steep sections that demand careful footing. I was glad I had worn my hiking boots and brought plenty of water, though I did regret forgetting my sunscreen. The sun was intense, even in October, and I could feel my skin starting to burn. Note to self: always pack sunscreen, no matter the season!
As I rounded the final lake, I was rewarded with a spectacular view of the entire cirque. The glacial lakes stretched out before me, shimmering in the afternoon sun, surrounded by a ring of towering peaks. It was a scene of unparalleled beauty, a testament to the power and artistry of nature. I sat there for a long time, simply soaking it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place.
The descent was easier on the lungs but harder on the knees. I took my time, carefully navigating the rocky terrain and enjoying the changing light as the sun began to set. As I reached the trailhead, I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The hike around the Circ de Colomers had been challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering a perfect blend of physical exertion and visual delight.
Back in Arties, I decided to treat myself to a well-deserved dinner at Tanau Sabor Gastrobar. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a tempting selection of local dishes. I opted for a traditional Catalan stew, savoring the rich flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a day of discovery, a celebration of both the natural and cultural treasures of Aigüestortes National Park.

I skipped Tardeo la Pleta bar tonight. I was too tired from the hike to stay out too late. I need to be well rested for my last day in the park.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo retreat in Aigüestortes National Park. I plan to visit Colomèrs and Font de la Ressaca, aiming to soak in as much of the park's beauty as possible before heading back to Bonn. I'll also be stopping by The North Face Store Vielha to pick up a portable charger, a lesson learned from today's near-dead phone battery. For breakfast, I will try Restaurante Alifara Taüll, and for lunch I plan to go to Sherry. I plan to finish the day at La Taverneta Après Ski for dinner.
This trip has been a journey of self-discovery and reconnection with nature. As I prepare to return to my floral design work in Bonn, I feel refreshed, inspired, and deeply grateful for the experiences I've had here. Aigüestortes National Park has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know I'll carry its beauty with me always.
