Whispers of the Past, Echoes of Today
Today, on the ninth day of my Naxian adventure, I sought to uncover some of the island's more secluded treasures. It was a day of quiet contemplation, artistic appreciation, and historical immersion. Naxos continues to surprise me with its ability to blend ancient stories with modern life, creating an experience that is both enriching and deeply moving.
My day began, as many do here, with a delightful breakfast at Deoudas. I savored the traditional Naxian flavors, fueling up for a day of exploration. The fresh ingredients and warm hospitality set the perfect tone for what was to come. With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to the Monastery of St. John's of Deti.
Discover the serene Monastery of St. John's of Deti in Paros, a peaceful retreat steeped in history and stunning natural beauty.
The drive to the monastery was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Naxian landscape. The Monastery of St. John's of Deti, perched serenely overlooking the bay, exuded an aura of peace and history. Originally known as Agios Ioannis, its history stretches back to the 16th century. I learned that it had been abandoned during Ottoman rule but later lovingly restored by a Dutch artist in the 1960s. The views from the monastery were breathtaking, with the azure Aegean Sea stretching out before me. I climbed to the roof to capture the iconic view of the blue dome against the backdrop of the sea. The monastery may be on Paros, but the views are worth the trip.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and beauty unfolds.
After soaking in the tranquility of the monastery, I made my way to the Statue of Ariadne.
A marble statue on Naxos that embodies Greek mythology, the Statue of Ariadne is a reminder of love, betrayal, and the island's rich history.
The statue stands as a tribute to the captivating and tragic tale of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete. According to mythology, she aided Theseus in his quest to defeat the Minotaur, only to be abandoned by him on the shores of Naxos. Crafted from Naxian marble, the statue captures the essence of love, loss, and the complex relationships between gods and mortals. Standing before the statue, I couldn't help but reflect on the poignant story of Ariadne and the enduring power of Greek mythology. It's a reminder of the island's rich history and the many layers of stories woven into its very fabric.
For lunch, I decided to try Su e Giu, a local favorite known for its delicious offerings.

I opted for a traditional Naxian dish, savoring the flavors of the island. The restaurant had a really lovely atmosphere, a mix of tourists and locals all enjoying the tastes of Naxos.
With a renewed sense of energy, I dedicated the afternoon to exploring the local art scene. My destination was Manos Art and Style, a shop known for its unique creations.

I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and diverse styles on display. I spent a happy hour browsing through the art, chatting with the owner about his inspirations and techniques. I even picked up a small piece to bring back home, a tangible reminder of my time on Naxos.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Lab Club for dinner.

The restaurant was buzzing with activity, a lively atmosphere filled with locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed a delicious meal, reflecting on the day's adventures. While some online reviews mention mixed experiences, I found the service prompt and the atmosphere cozy.
Tomorrow marks my final day on this enchanting island. I plan to visit the watermill Eggares and the Fish & Olive Gallery, eager to soak in a little more Naxian culture and scenery before my journey home. Although Hans and Sofia are not with me on this trip, I am already planning a return trip with them in the near future. Naxos has captured my heart, and I know they would love it just as much as I do. I'm already anticipating sharing the treasures I've discovered with them, reliving the magic of this solo adventure together as a family.
Naxos has a special way of etching itself into your memory. It's not just the stunning landscapes or the historical sites; it's the feeling of being embraced by a culture that values beauty, tradition, and connection. As I prepare to leave, I carry with me a piece of Naxos, a reminder of the simple joys and profound discoveries that travel can bring. Until next time, Naxos, adiós!
