Finding Paradise in Agios Prokopios

Today was all about embracing the simple joys of island life. I traded the historical sites for the soothing rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the sun, and the simple pleasure of good food. It was a day to recharge, reflect, and soak in the beauty of Naxos at its finest.

The day began with a leisurely breakfast at La Vigne - Restaurant - Wine - cellar since 2009. I was immediately charmed by its cozy atmosphere. Nestled in a narrow alleyway in the heart of Naxos Town, it felt like a hidden gem. I savored a delicious breakfast, enjoying the cozy ambiance before setting off for the day's adventures.

My destination was Agios Prokopios, a beach known for its crystal-clear waters and laid-back vibe. The beach is only about 5 kilometers from Naxos Town, and I could have taken a leisurely walk or bike ride there. But I decided to take the local bus. The ride itself was an experience, winding through the island's landscape, offering glimpses of local life.

Arriving at Agios Prokopios, I was immediately struck by the beach's beauty. The sand was light-colored and thick, and the water was a bright turquoise. It felt like stepping into a postcard. I found a comfortable spot and spent the morning basking in the sun, occasionally dipping into the refreshing sea. The water was so clear, it felt like swimming in a giant pool.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.

For lunch, I decided to try Giannoulis, a restaurant known for its warm hospitality and traditional Greek cuisine. As expected, there was a line, but the staff offered complimentary white wine, which was a lovely touch. The friendly atmosphere made me feel like I was visiting old friends. Once seated, I indulged in a hearty Greek salad and some perfectly grilled souvlaki. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. I can see why Giannoulis is a must-visit for anyone coming to Naxos.

After lunch, I returned to the beach for more sun and relaxation. I enjoyed watching families build sandcastles, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and friends laughing and playing in the water. Agios Prokopios truly has something for everyone. I even saw a few people enjoying windsurfing and other water sports.

As the afternoon drew to a close, I made my way to Caya Italian Cuisine Cocktail Bar for dinner. Although I usually prefer local cuisine, I was intrigued by the idea of Italian food with a Naxian twist. Caya is located on Plaka Beach, which meant a short bus ride from Agios Prokopios. The restaurant has a relaxed, beachy vibe, with comfortable seating and stunning views of the Aegean Sea. I ordered the Naxian potato pizza, which was a delightful combination of Italian flavors and local ingredients.

For a final treat, I headed to Rooftop Bar Naxos for a drink. The bar offered panoramic views of the island. As I sipped on a refreshing cocktail, I watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

It’s funny, back in Heidelberg, Hans sometimes teases me about how much I love a good sunset. He says I’m like a moth to a flame, always seeking out the best spot to watch the day end. Maybe he’s right, but there’s something so magical about watching the sun disappear over the horizon, especially when you’re in a place as beautiful as Naxos. It’s a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, and it fills me with a sense of peace and gratitude.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that sometimes the best travel experiences are the simplest ones. No ancient ruins, no bustling markets, just the sun, the sea, and the sand. It was a day to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and connect with the natural beauty of Naxos.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Monastery of St. John's of Deti and the Statue of Ariadne [if Monastery of St. John's of Deti exists, else remove]. I’m looking forward to discovering more of Naxos's hidden gems, but for now, I'm content with the memories of today's blissful beach escape.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made a mental note to buy a power adapter. I completely forgot to pack one, and it's been a struggle to keep my camera and phone charged. I also realized I miss having my reusable water bottle. It's much more convenient and eco-friendly than buying bottled water all the time. Oh well, live and learn, right?
