Day 6: Unveiling Naxos's Hidden Charms: A Day of Ancient Echoes and Village Wonders
Explore Naxos's serene villages and ancient sites. Discover the island's hidden beauty and savor authentic Greek flavors on a solo journey.
Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today
Today was a day of venturing deeper into the heart of Naxos, away from the well-trodden tourist paths and into the serene embrace of its hidden villages and ancient sites. It's these quieter corners of the island that truly capture my imagination, offering glimpses into a way of life that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the land.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Ntoyzenia. Though it is located in Lionas, which is a bit far away, I decided to have breakfast there, as I had heard great things about it. I savored a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and fresh fruit, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The yogurt was thick and creamy, the honey sweet and fragrant, and the fruit bursting with the flavors of the Naxian sun. I made sure to take some photographs of the dishes, hoping to replicate them back home in Heidelberg for Hans and Sofia. I am sure that they will love the Greek flavors.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Melanes. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush valleys and past terraced hillsides dotted with olive groves. It's October, and the landscape is painted in warm autumnal hues, a stark contrast to the whitewashed villages that cling to the hillsides.
My first stop was the quaint village of Melanes Naxos Cyclades (Θεατράκι). Wandering through its narrow streets, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. The village exudes an authentic Cycladic charm with its labyrinthine streets and small cubic houses. I was particularly drawn to the architecture, a mix of blue and white houses perched on a hill. Legend has it that the village got its name from a sibling conflict, where two brothers dueled for the governance of Naxos. Today, it's a peaceful place where the main occupations are cattle breeding and agriculture.

I explored the area and discovered medieval towers scattered around Melanes. These towers once served as homes or summer houses for noblemen during medieval times. I also learned about the ancient marble quarries and the oversized Kouroi statues in Flerio and Faraggi. The Kouros of Melanes, a colossal statue, stands as a testament to the island's historical significance.
To truly understand a place, you must wander its hidden paths and listen to the whispers of its past.
Next on my itinerary was Kourounochori, a village known as the Flower village. The village is nestled on a mountainside, surrounded by greenery. As I walked through the village, I admired the pretty one or two-story houses adorned with flowers. The village offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Kourounochori has a rich history, with landmarks like the tower of Della Rocca and the unfinished Kouros at the archeological site Flerio.

For lunch, I decided to try Dal Professore Naxos Mediterranean Restaurant, a seaside restaurant with an amazing view of the Aegean Sea. I indulged in fresh pasta made with local ingredients. The combination of traditional recipes and modern creativity made for an unforgettable meal. The restaurant also offers an excellent wine list, allowing me to pair my meal perfectly.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself seeking a place to unwind and reflect on my adventures. Funky hops Naxos beckoned with its impressive selection of Greek micro-brew beers. I sampled a few local brews, each with its unique character and flavor, while chatting with some fellow travelers. The owner, Manos, is a passionate craft beer enthusiast who made the experience even more enjoyable.

For dinner, I ventured to Faros tou Alykou, a restaurant known for its Greek organic cuisine. The restaurant uses fresh vegetables and olive oil from their own garden. I savored traditional Naxian dishes while enjoying the beautiful view of the sea and the Cedar forest. The warm atmosphere and delicious food made for a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

As I sit here now, back at the Korali Garden Hotel, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. Naxos has a way of revealing its hidden charms to those who are willing to venture off the beaten path. The ancient echoes of Melanes, the floral beauty of Kourounochori, the culinary delights of Naxos Town – each has left an indelible mark on my soul.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Pyrgos Sanoudos-Kastro and the Old Wind Mills. I am also looking forward to visiting Yazoo Concept Store. I am also hoping to sample the local cuisine at Pizzadelia, Giorgis, and Oniro Wine Bar Restaurant. It promises to be another day filled with discovery and wonder. Until then, goodnight from Naxos!
