Day 7: Stepping Back in Time: Discovering Naxos's Historical Treasures
Explore Naxos's past with Maria as she visits ancient castles, windmills, and charming shops, savoring local flavors along the way.
Echoes of the Past
Today, Naxos whispered stories of centuries past. It was a day of exploring ancient landmarks and soaking in the island's rich history, a journey that resonated deeply with my love for cultural anthropology. Each stone, each path, seemed to hum with tales waiting to be discovered.
The day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast. I ventured to Pizzadelia, a charming spot in town, and treated myself to a delightful pizza. I opted for the thin-crust vegetarian pizza. It was a perfect start to a day dedicated to exploration.

With renewed energy, I set off to Pyrgos Sanoudos-Kastro. The drive itself was picturesque, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning Naxian landscape. As I approached Pyrgos, the castle emerged majestically on the horizon. The fortress, built in the 13th century by the Venetian Sanoudos family, stands as a testament to the island's rich medieval history. The views from the top were breathtaking, encompassing the Aegean Sea and the verdant hills. I spent a long time wandering through the remnants of the ancient structures, imagining life within those walls centuries ago.
History is not just a collection of dates and names, but a vibrant tapestry of human experiences woven together across time.

The serenity of the location was striking, a stark contrast to the battles and sieges it had once witnessed. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this historical gem. The well-preserved walls and narrow pathways made it easy to imagine the lives of the nobles who once called this castle home. I even made a mental note to share some of these photos with Sofia, my daughter, who is currently studying medieval history in school. I think she’d appreciate the architecture and the stories behind it.
Next on my itinerary were the Old Wind Mills. These iconic structures are a defining feature of the Naxian landscape. As I approached the windmills, I was struck by their rustic charm. Built in the 19th century, these windmills once played a vital role in the island's economy, harnessing the power of the wind to grind grain. The views from the windmill hill were panoramic, offering stunning vistas of the sea and the surrounding countryside. I learned that these tripod windmills represent a distinct form of Cycladic architecture and are linked to the economic and historical development of the villages.

I couldn't resist capturing the moment with my camera, knowing that Hans, my husband, would appreciate the scenic beauty. He always enjoys seeing the landscapes I explore, especially since he can't always join me on these adventures. The windmills provided a tangible link to Naxos's past, reminding me of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the island's inhabitants.
From there, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at the Yazoo Concept Store. Located on Plaka Beach, this boutique offered a curated selection of clothing, accessories, and local delicacies. I browsed through the unique designs, admiring the craftsmanship and creativity of the local artisans. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silver necklace, a piece that resonated with my Mexican heritage. I also picked up a small bottle of local wine to enjoy later at the hotel. The store itself was a delightful space, blending the charm of a boutique with the relaxed vibe of a beachside shop.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Giorgis. Situated in the village of Melanes, this traditional taverna is known for its home-style Greek cuisine. I savored a delicious plate of stew, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The flavors were authentic and comforting, reminding me of my own attempts to recreate Mexican dishes with a German twist back in Heidelberg. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with locals and tourists alike sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect setting to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Oniro Wine Bar Restaurant. Nestled in the heart of Chora, this hidden gem boasts a rooftop terrace with breathtaking views of the harbor and the Venetian castle. I sipped on a glass of local wine, savoring the panoramic vista as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The restaurant's ambiance was intimate and romantic, with soft jazz music creating a serene backdrop. The friendly staff and the exquisite Greek dishes made it an unforgettable dining experience.

The sunset over Naxos was nothing short of magical, casting a golden glow over the island's landscape. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that travel can bring. I thought of Hans and Sofia, wishing they could share this moment with me. Perhaps we could plan a family trip to Naxos next year, allowing them to experience the island's charm firsthand.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Laguna di Agios Prokopios and spend some time on the beach. I’m also looking forward to visiting the Rooftop Bar Naxos for a relaxing evening drink.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island. Naxos has a way of captivating the soul, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is truly unique. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a tapestry of experiences that will stay with me long after I leave. And as I prepare for another day of discovery, I am reminded of the words of my grandmother:
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
Until tomorrow, Naxos. Your history and beauty continue to inspire me.
