Guimarães Unveiled: A Day of Discovery
Today was all about soaking in the atmosphere of Guimarães, letting the city's history and charm wash over me. It's amazing how a place can feel so ancient and yet so alive, bustling with modern energy while still whispering tales of kings and countesses. Hans and I set out with no particular agenda, just a desire to wander and see where the day would take us. And let me tell you, Guimarães did not disappoint!
Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We found a lovely spot called Já Cá Estou. The name translates to 'I'm already here,' which felt quite apt – like the city was welcoming us with open arms. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry, a *pastel de nata*, and a strong *café com leite*. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried a local cheese-filled bread that he declared was 'fantastisch!'

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we ventured into the heart of Guimarães. Our first stop was Largo do Toural, the main square. It was buzzing with activity. I learned that this square has been the heart of Guimarães since the 17th century, originally hosting cattle fairs and bullfights. Today, it's a vibrant meeting point, surrounded by shops, cafes, and stunning architecture. The energy was infectious, and we spent a good while simply people-watching and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”
From Largo do Toural, we ambled towards the Estátua da Condessa Mumadona Dias. As someone who has always been inspired by powerful women in history, I was particularly drawn to this statue. Mumadona Dias was a 10th-century countess who played a crucial role in the early development of Guimarães. She ordered the construction of the Guimarães Castle to protect the monastery and its people from Norman invasions. Standing before her statue, I felt a profound connection to the city's past and the strong woman who helped shape it. It's fascinating to think that this city, now so vibrant and modern, owes so much to a woman who lived over a thousand years ago.

Next, we wandered over to Largo de Donães, a charming little square that felt like a hidden gem. It’s one of the more recent redevelopments in the historical center, and it’s absolutely lovely. Apparently, a modern building that didn’t quite fit in was torn down to create this open space, giving the square back the central role it had in the 14th century. The square is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, and there’s even a modern iron sculpture that pays homage to the arts and crafts of Guimarães. We found a cozy cafe and enjoyed a *sumo de laranja natural* (freshly squeezed orange juice) while soaking in the peaceful ambiance.

Lunch was at Adega dos Caquinhos, a traditional Portuguese restaurant that came highly recommended. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. Hans and I shared a *bacalhau à brás* (codfish with scrambled eggs and potatoes) and *arroz de marisco* (seafood rice). The *bacalhau* was perfectly seasoned and the *arroz de marisco* was bursting with fresh seafood flavors. It was the kind of meal that warms you from the inside out.

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping. We stumbled upon a charming little shop called Recordações e Sabores de Guimarães. It was filled with local crafts, artisanal products, and regional delicacies. I picked up some handmade soaps and a bottle of local wine to take back to Heidelberg. Hans found a beautiful hand-painted tile with a traditional Portuguese design. It's exactly the kind of souvenir that will remind us of our time here.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves drawn back to Largo do Toural. The square was even more lively than before, with street performers entertaining the crowds and families enjoying the warm evening air. We decided to treat ourselves to some *gelado* (ice cream) from a nearby vendor. I chose a scoop of *morango* (strawberry) and Hans went for *chocolate*. We sat on a bench, savoring our ice cream and watching the world go by.
For dinner, we decided to try Deguste by Pedro Pinto. The restaurant had a modern, trendy vibe. I opted for a gourmet burger with local cheese and caramelized onions, while Hans chose a steak with a side of roasted vegetables. My burger was juicy and flavorful, and Hans raved about his steak. It was a delicious end to a delightful day.
