A Journey Through Time and Taste

Today was a day of venturing beyond the well-trodden tourist paths of Chiang Mai, and it was absolutely rewarding. I decided to dedicate myself to exploring some of the lesser-known historical and cultural sites, and to fully immerse myself in the local culinary scene. It's amazing how much history and flavor can be packed into a single day when you're open to discovering the hidden corners of a city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Peeyai Restaurant. It's a cozy little place that came highly recommended by the hotel staff, and I was eager to experience some authentic Thai flavors. The aroma of spices and herbs filled the air as I stepped inside, and I instantly felt a sense of warmth and welcome. I opted for a classic Thai breakfast of Jok, a savory rice porridge, and it was the perfect way to start my day. It reminded me of some of the comfort foods I grew up with back in Ouro Preto, Brazil, a city also steeped in history and tradition.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to my first destination: Wiang Kum Kam. This ancient city, once lost beneath layers of sediment, is now being excavated, revealing a fascinating glimpse into Chiang Mai's past. I rented a bicycle near the site, and that turned out to be the perfect way to explore the sprawling ruins. As I cycled along the quiet lanes, I was struck by the serenity of the area. It felt a world away from the bustling city center, and I could almost imagine what life must have been like centuries ago.

The ruins themselves were impressive, with crumbling temples and ancient walls hinting at the city's former grandeur. I spent hours wandering around, taking photos, and trying to piece together the story of this lost city. There were other tourists around, but it certainly wasn't crowded, which allowed me to fully appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. I even chatted with a local archaeologist who shared some fascinating insights into the ongoing excavation efforts.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

After immersing myself in the ancient history of Wiang Kum Kam, I decided to shift gears and explore a more recent aspect of Lanna culture at the Lanna Traditional House Museum (CMULHM). This open-air museum showcases a collection of traditional Lanna houses, each representing a different aspect of local life. It was fascinating to see how people lived in this region centuries ago, and to learn about the unique architectural styles and customs.

The museum is located on the grounds of Chiang Mai University, which added to the peaceful atmosphere. As I strolled through the leafy grounds, I felt a sense of connection to the past. It was as if the spirits of the former residents were still present, watching over their homes. I was particularly drawn to the Tai-Lue House, which was built in 1917 using wood from old wooden houses. The story of Oui Tood, the Tai-Lue descendant who lived in the house until the age of 109, was particularly touching.

By this point, I was starting to feel a bit peckish, so I decided to grab some lunch at Aroy Dee. This small, unassuming restaurant came highly recommended for its authentic Thai cuisine, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I ordered a plate of Pad See Ew, stir-fried noodles with vegetables and soy sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the sauce was bursting with flavor. It was a simple dish, but it was executed perfectly, and it left me feeling completely satisfied.

With renewed energy, I headed to my final destination of the day: Wat Lok Moli. This temple, located just outside the northern city moat, is known for its beautiful Lanna architecture and its serene atmosphere. As I approached the temple, I was struck by its calm and ancient presence. It felt different from the other temples I had visited in Chiang Mai, with a more subdued and contemplative atmosphere.

I spent some time wandering around the temple grounds, admiring the intricate wood carvings and the towering chedi. There were fewer tourists here than at some of the more popular temples, which allowed me to fully appreciate the peaceful ambiance. I sat for a while in the main hall, listening to the monks chanting and feeling a sense of calm wash over me. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and discovery.

Before heading back to The Velvet Orchid, I decided to treat myself to a vegan dinner at Reform Kafé - Vegan Garden Restaurant. As someone who’s always keen on sustainable and healthy options, this place was a gem. The tranquil garden setting was incredibly relaxing, and the menu was full of delicious plant-based dishes. I opted for a vegan version of Khao Soi, a Northern Thai curry noodle soup, and it was absolutely divine. It was a flavorful and satisfying meal that left me feeling nourished and content.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Unique Space Chiang Mai. I wasn't really planning on buying anything, but I wanted to experience the local shopping scene. This shop was filled with unique and handcrafted items, and I ended up finding a beautiful silk scarf that will be a perfect gift for my mother, back in Brazil. I think she'll love the intricate patterns and the vibrant colors.

To cap off the evening, I decided to stop for a drink at Nophaburi Bar | Thai Cocktail. This cozy little bar is known for its creative cocktails and its relaxed atmosphere. I ordered a signature cocktail made with local ingredients, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. The bartender was friendly and engaging, and I enjoyed chatting with him about the local cocktail scene. I even learned a few new Thai phrases that I can use tomorrow!
