Solo Adventure Through the Historic Streets of Hue
Day 12: Whispers of the Past: Discovering Hidden Gems in Hue
Uncover the serene beauty of Bao Vinh Ancient Town and the spiritual To Temple in Hue, a journey through time and tradition.
Echoes of Old Hue
Today marked the final full day of my solo adventure in Hue, and I was determined to soak up every last bit of its historical charm. With a mix of excitement and a touch of melancholy, I set out to explore Bao Vinh Ancient Town and The To Temple, two destinations promising a deep dive into Vietnam’s rich past. It's hard to believe that tomorrow I will already be heading back to Germany.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Sân Mây Huế. This vegetarian restaurant, tucked away in a serene garden, was the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploration. The tranquil atmosphere, with its traditional architecture and lush greenery, made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I savored a delicious bowl of *bún chay*, a flavorful vermicelli soup with tofu and vegetables, while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. It was a delightful start to the day, and I felt grateful for the quiet moment of reflection before diving into the day's adventures.

After breakfast, I made my way to Bao Vinh Ancient Town, a place that whispers stories of a bygone era. Located a short distance from the city center, Bao Vinh was once a bustling trading port in Central Vietnam, attracting merchants from China, Macau, Japan, India, and even Europe. As I wandered through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia, imagining the vibrant scene of merchants haggling and ships unloading their goods.

The town's architecture is a fascinating blend of old and new, with traditional wooden houses featuring low-tiled roofs nestled beside two-story structures from the 20th century. Many of the buildings are covered in moss, adding to the town's ancient charm. I strolled along the streets, admiring the well-preserved houses and imagining the families who had lived there for generations. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of Heidelberg, but I found a certain beauty in its simplicity and quietude.
I visited the Bao Vinh Old Communal House, a place of worship and community gathering. Although its exact construction date is unknown, it's dedicated to a Pham family hero and serves as a focal point for the villagers. The communal house exuded a nostalgic atmosphere, with its ancient architecture, moss-covered walls, and old votive brazier. It was easy to imagine the villagers coming together for ceremonies and celebrations, their voices echoing through the halls.
As I walked through Bao Vinh, I couldn't help but reflect on the resilience of this ancient town. Despite the passage of time and the impact of wars, Bao Vinh has managed to preserve its unique character and charm. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of the Vietnamese people and their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. I even popped into Anh Silk Shop, hoping to find a small souvenir to bring home. While I didn’t make a purchase, I admired the beautiful silk products and chatted with the friendly owner about the history of silk weaving in the region.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives and connecting with the stories of the past.
For lunch, I ventured to Nhà Vườn Xuân Đài, a garden restaurant known for its traditional Hue cuisine. The restaurant was set in a beautiful garden, with lush greenery and colorful flowers creating a tranquil atmosphere. I indulged in a delicious meal of local specialties, including *gỏi thanh trà*, a refreshing pomelo salad, and *cá kho*, braised fish in a rich, savory sauce. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, and I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the culinary heritage of Hue.

In the afternoon, I visited The To Temple, also known as the Temple of Generations, one of the most important ancestral temples of the Nguyen dynasty. Located within the Imperial City, the temple was built in 1822 under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang and dedicated to Gia Long, the founder of the dynasty. Later, it was expanded to include memorials to successive emperors.

As I entered the temple complex, I was struck by its grandeur and solemnity. The architecture reflected the harmony and order central to Vietnamese imperial design, with a broad courtyard leading to the main shrine. The main shrine was fronted by dragon-adorned staircases and flanked by tall red columns supporting yellow-tiled roofs. Behind the main hall, additional shrines enshrined the spirit tablets of other Nguyen emperors, each positioned according to strict hierarchy.
The To Temple served not only as a sacred site for ritual offerings but also as a powerful symbol of dynastic legitimacy and continuity. I wandered through the complex, admiring the richly lacquered woodwork, the intricate carvings, and the symbolic use of color. It was a place of reverence and contemplation, and I felt a deep sense of connection to Vietnam's monarchical past.
Before 1958, the temple housed only seven worship projects of kings Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Kien Phuc, Dong Khanh, and Khai Dinh. Later, three kings who opposed the French colonialists, Ham Nghi, Thanh Thai, and Duy Tan, were also honored. The To Temple is the largest and most important temple in Hue, and it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Nguyen dynasty.
The afternoon was drawing to a close, and I decided to treat myself to a delicious dinner at Nhà Hàng Minh & Coco. This local restaurant offered a diverse menu in English, French, and Vietnamese, making it easy for international visitors like myself to find something appealing. The owner was incredibly friendly and spoke excellent English, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, *cơm hến*, a flavorful rice dish with baby clams, and savored every bite. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection.
