A Day of Echoes and Flavors
Today, Nafplio revealed more of its intricate layers, a blend of histories and cultures woven into the fabric of this charming town. My explorations took me from solemn monuments to remnants of Ottoman influence, each stop adding depth to my understanding of this historically rich corner of Greece. The day was a tapestry of reflection and culinary delights, perfectly encapsulating the essence of solo travel.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Piccola Italia. While I was looking forward to a hearty Italian meal, I was disappointed to find it permanently closed. Instead, I opted for a traditional Greek coffee and a pastry from a nearby bakery. Sipping my coffee, I prepared myself for the day's historical explorations. The November air was crisp, with a hint of rain, so I made sure to bundle up before heading out.
My first stop was the Lion of the Bavarians. As I walked towards the Pronoia district, I was struck by the quiet residential streets, a stark contrast to the bustling harbor. The lion, carved into the rock face, was an imposing sight. It was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in memory of the Bavarian soldiers who died during a typhoid epidemic in Nafplio in the 1830s. The sculpture, created by German sculptor Christian Siegel, is a poignant symbol of grief and remembrance. I learned that locals used to refer to it satirically as Aggouroon, meaning cucumber, suggesting the Bavarians died from eating too many cucumbers. Standing before the monument, I reflected on the layers of history embedded in this town, each with its own stories of triumph and tragedy.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
Next on my itinerary was the Ottoman hamam baths, a relic from Nafplio's period under Ottoman rule. I found the baths on Platanos Street, a short walk from Syntagma Square. Although currently under restoration, the site offered a glimpse into the town's multicultural past. These baths, constructed during the second period of Ottoman rule (1715-1822), served as a place for purification and socialization. The architecture, though faded, still hinted at the intricate tile work and the hemispherical dome that once covered the warm space. The ongoing restoration efforts are a testament to the importance of preserving these historical layers, allowing future visitors to appreciate the blend of Ottoman and Greek elements.

For lunch, I ventured to Elatos Tavern, located on Bouboulinas Street. This tavern is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and fresh seafood. I savored a delicious meal of grilled octopus and a glass of local wine, enjoying the sea view from the restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made for a perfect midday break, a chance to recharge before continuing my explorations.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in some local shopping. My destination was Antiminsio, a shop I had read about that offered a variety of local crafts. While the shop was interesting, I was hoping for something more unique. Instead, I stumbled upon a small boutique selling handmade jewelry inspired by ancient Greek designs. I purchased a delicate silver necklace with a Minoan bee pendant, a small treasure to remind me of my time in Nafplio. I also explored other shops in the Old Town, filled with handcrafted ceramics and textiles. I also learned that Nafplio is known for komboloi, Greek worry beads.

As evening approached, I made my way to Espero Gastrotavern for dinner. Located in the heart of Nafplio, this restaurant serves sophisticated dishes of ethnic cuisine with modern flavors. The atmosphere was elegant and cozy, with modern decorative touches. I enjoyed a wonderful meal of lamb with roasted vegetables, paired with a glass of local red wine. The friendly service and the stylish setting made for a memorable dining experience.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the way Nafplio seamlessly blends its historical past with its modern present. Tomorrow, I plan to take the City Tour Happy Train and visit the Archaeological Museum of the Asclepieion of Epidaurus, continuing my exploration of the region's rich history. I might even stop by the Onyx Lounge Bar for a nightcap.
As I walked back to Leto Nuevo Hotel, the lights of Nafplio twinkled around me, casting a warm glow on the cobblestone streets. Though Hans and Anna are not here with me, I feel their presence in my heart, sharing in these experiences from afar. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful town, to learn about its history, and to savor its flavors.
