A Peaceful Farewell

As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken these past two weeks. Today, my final day in Fes, was a blend of relaxation, exploration, and a touch of the unexpected, providing a perfect ending to this chapter. It’s funny how travel can surprise you, even when you think you’ve seen it all.

The morning began with a leisurely breakfast at Mom's touch. I savored the last of the Moroccan pastries and mint tea, knowing I would soon be back to my usual Berlin fare. It's these simple culinary moments that I find myself cherishing most when I travel, a taste of the place that lingers long after I've left.

Serenity at Vichy Thermalia Spa Hôtel Moulay Yacoub

After breakfast, I decided to indulge in some much-needed relaxation at the Vichy Thermalia Spa Hôtel Moulay Yacoub Fes. The drive there was an experience in itself, passing through the Moroccan countryside, a landscape so different from the urban sprawl of Berlin. The spa was a haven of tranquility, and I spent several hours enjoying the thermal baths and massage treatments. As an archivist, my work often involves poring over documents and artifacts, which can be quite taxing on the body. This spa day was exactly what I needed to rejuvenate before the long journey home. I opted for a traditional hammam, a truly immersive experience that left my skin feeling incredibly soft and my mind utterly relaxed. It was a delightful contrast to the bustling medina, a moment of calm reflection before heading back to the organized chaos of my life in Berlin.

A Glimpse into History at El Glaoui Palace Entrance

Refreshed and invigorated, I ventured back towards Fes, eager to make the most of my last day. My next stop was the El Glaoui Palace Entrance. Finding the palace was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away in a quiet street outside the medina. The entrance, marked by old posters and newspaper clippings, felt like stepping back in time. Paying the caretaker, I entered the palace and was immediately struck by the blend of grandeur and decay. The palace, once owned by the powerful Glaoui family, offered a glimpse into the lives of Moroccan aristocracy in the early 20th century. The central courtyard, though showing signs of neglect, still retained its elegant archways and the remnants of a rectangular pool. Wandering through the rooms, I imagined the palace in its heyday, filled with lavish parties and important political gatherings. The caretaker, also a painter, had his artwork displayed throughout the palace, adding a contemporary layer to the historical setting. It was a fascinating experience, a reminder that history is not just about grand monuments but also about the lives of the people who inhabited them.

Panoramic Views from Viewpoint Medina

Next on my list was the Viewpoint Medina, offering a panoramic vista of Fes. The view was simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, I could see the sprawling medina, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and bustling souks. The setting sun cast a warm glow over the city, highlighting the minarets of the mosques and the rooftops of the riads. It was the perfect spot to reflect on my time in Fes, a city that had captivated me with its rich history and vibrant culture. I thought of Hans and Anna back in Berlin, wondering what they were doing and eager to share my stories with them. I made a mental note to look through the museum's collection when I got back to see if we had any artifacts from the Glaoui family.

A Culinary Farewell at Dar Roumana

As evening approached, I treated myself to a farewell dinner at Dar Roumana. The restaurant, known for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine, was the perfect setting for my last meal in Fes. I savored each dish, from the flavorful tagine to the delicate pastries, each bite a reminder of the culinary delights I had discovered during my trip. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its traditional decor and soft lighting, added to the overall experience. It was a fitting end to a day filled with serenity and unexpected treasures.

Shopping for Memories at Art Fez

Before heading back to the riad, I couldn't resist a final stop at Art Fez, a shop known for its unique, handcrafted shoes. The medina was quieter now, the bustling crowds replaced by a peaceful stillness. Art Fez was a treasure trove of artisanal footwear, each pair telling a story of Moroccan craftsmanship. I spent some time browsing the collection, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. I ended up buying a pair of babouches, traditional Moroccan slippers, as a souvenir for myself. They were made from cactus fiber and camel hair, a unique combination that spoke to the resourcefulness and creativity of the local artisans. As I made my purchase, I chatted with the shop owner, Zakaria, who shared stories about his craft and the history of shoemaking in Fes. It was a personal connection that made the souvenir even more special.

As I walked back to the riad, the scent of spices and the sounds of the city faded into the night. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had in Fes. This trip had been more than just a vacation; it had been a journey of discovery, a chance to immerse myself in a culture so different from my own. I thought of the conversations I had with the local artisans, the flavors I had tasted, and the sights I had seen. These were the memories I would carry with me, the stories I would share with Hans and Anna back in Berlin.

Tomorrow, I will be heading to the airport, ready to return to my life in Berlin. But a part of me will always remain in Fes, wandering through the narrow alleyways of the medina, savoring the taste of mint tea, and marveling at the beauty of Moroccan craftsmanship. This trip has reminded me of the importance of travel, not just as a way to see new places but as a way to connect with different cultures and broaden our understanding of the world. And who knows, maybe one day I'll return to Fes, to explore more of its hidden treasures and immerse myself once again in its rich history and vibrant culture. Until then, I will cherish the memories of this incredible journey, a chapter in my life that I will always hold dear.

As I prepare to leave, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. While there are no specific plans for tomorrow, I know that the memories and experiences from this trip will stay with me, influencing my work and inspiring my future travels. Fes, with its chaotic beauty and rich history, has left an indelible mark on my soul. And as I close this chapter, I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this fascinating city with my friends, sharing laughter, discoveries, and unforgettable moments. Until next time, Fes, goodbye and thank you for the memories.
