Paxos, Until Next Time
As our family adventure in Paxos draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible memories we've created. Today was a perfect blend of natural beauty, delicious food, and simple pleasures, a fitting end to our Greek island escape. Even though I'm a little sad that our vacation is ending, I'm excited to share the highlights of our last day with you.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Cafe Aveois in Gaios. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. Sipping my cappuccino, I watched the town slowly come to life. Hans enjoyed a hearty Greek yogurt with honey, while Sofia devoured a cinnamon-custard pastry. It’s become a tradition for us to start our mornings here, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere and planning our day’s adventures. This morning, we were especially excited about visiting the Galazies Spilies, or Blue Caves, one of Paxos’s most renowned natural wonders.

After breakfast, we made a quick stop at the Paxos Mini Market to pick up some essentials. I always love visiting local markets because it gives me a glimpse into the everyday life of the community. This mini-market had everything we needed, from fresh produce to local snacks. We grabbed some sunscreen, water, and a few extra treats for Sofia. It’s amazing how much more authentic a place feels when you shop where the locals do.

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly our visit to the Galazies Spilies. We took a boat tour from Gaios, and the ride itself was an adventure. The Ionian Sea sparkled under the sun, and the views of the coastline were simply breathtaking. As we approached the caves, the water transformed into the most incredible shades of blue I have ever seen. It was almost surreal, like something out of a dream. The boat captain expertly navigated through the narrow openings, and we found ourselves inside these magnificent natural cathedrals.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are hidden, waiting to be discovered.
Swimming inside the caves was an unforgettable experience. The water was crystal clear and refreshingly cool, a welcome contrast to the warm sun. Sofia was particularly thrilled, splashing around and marveling at the blue reflections dancing on the cave walls. I felt a sense of awe and tranquility, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature. Hans captured some amazing photos, which I know we’ll treasure for years to come.
After our aquatic adventure, we were all feeling quite hungry. We decided to have lunch at Paxos Burger House, also in Gaios. I know, I know, burgers in Greece? But we had heard such great things about this place, and Sofia was craving something familiar. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The burgers were juicy and flavorful, and the fries were perfectly crispy. It was a satisfying and delicious meal, a perfect break after our morning of exploration. Sofia declared it the best burger she’s ever had, which is high praise indeed.

In the late afternoon, we took a leisurely stroll through Gaios, soaking in the last moments of our Paxos vacation. The town was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the warm weather and vibrant atmosphere. We stopped by a few souvenir shops, picking up small mementos to remind us of our trip. I found a beautiful piece of handmade jewelry, a delicate silver necklace with a small blue stone, which I plan to wear as a reminder of the stunning blue waters of Paxos.
As evening approached, we made our way to Thymari Restaurant Paxos for our farewell dinner. This restaurant, located a bit inland, is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We sat at a table in their charming garden, surrounded by olive trees and the gentle sounds of nature. The food was absolutely divine. We started with a selection of classic Greek appetizers: tzatziki, dolmades, and a fresh Greek salad. For our main courses, Hans ordered the lamb kleftiko, Sofia had the moussaka, and I opted for the grilled octopus. Every dish was bursting with flavor, made with fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect way to celebrate our last night in Paxos.

During dinner, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip. Sofia loved swimming in the Blue Caves and playing on the beaches. Hans enjoyed exploring the island’s hidden corners and capturing its beauty through his photography. And I cherished the simple moments, like our morning coffees at Cafe Aveois and our leisurely walks through the villages. This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of family and the joy of exploring new places together.
As we prepare to leave Paxos tomorrow, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had and the memories we’ve created. This island has captured our hearts with its natural beauty, charming villages, and warm hospitality. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly relax and appreciate the simple things in life. Though our vacation is coming to an end, I know we’ll carry the spirit of Paxos with us, wherever we go. I’m already dreaming of our next visit, eager to explore more of this enchanting island and create even more cherished memories. I will miss the crystal-clear waters, the smell of olive groves, and the friendly faces of the locals.
Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Berlin. It will be a long travel day, with a ferry to Corfu and then a flight back home. I’m a little sad to leave this paradise, but I’m also excited to return to our cozy apartment in Berlin and share our adventures with friends and family. And who knows, maybe our next adventure is just around the corner. Until then, farewell Paxos, and thank you for the memories!
Reflecting on this trip, I realize how much I value these moments with my family. Living in Berlin, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of city life. Taking the time to disconnect and explore new places together has been incredibly enriching. I feel more connected to Hans and Sofia, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to create these lasting memories. It’s these experiences that truly make life special. And as I close this chapter of our Paxos adventure, I am already anticipating the new stories that await us. I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of our family's many travel adventures.
I'm already looking forward to planning our next family getaway. Perhaps we'll explore another Greek island, or maybe we'll venture further afield. The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to see where our travels take us next. But for now, it's time to pack our bags, say goodbye to Paxos, and head back home. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. Until next time, happy travels!
