Exploring the Charm of Puglia with My Love
Day 5: A Day of Coastal Wonders: Exploring Torre Guaceto and the Flavors of Ostuni
Discover Puglia's stunning Torre Guaceto, savor local cuisine in Ostuni, and enjoy a relaxing evening at a charming wine bar.
Seaside Serenity and Culinary Delights
Today was a beautiful blend of natural wonders and gastronomic pleasures here in Puglia. From the protected shores of Torre Guaceto to the charming streets of Ostuni, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. It’s days like these that remind me why Hans and I decided to embark on this adventure, trading the familiar for the extraordinary.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at DA LUCIANO - La Puglia dentro in Polignano a Mare. Even though it wasn't technically in Ostuni, we decided to start our day here, as we were passing by. The reviews online mentioned their delicious sandwiches and seafood. I opted for a simple yet satisfying focaccia with prosciutto, while Hans enjoyed a seafood sandwich. The restaurant had a lovely view, which made our breakfast even more enjoyable. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.
With our appetites sated, we set off towards the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area. The drive itself was a treat, with olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. Arriving at Torre Guaceto, I was immediately struck by the pristine beauty of the coastline. The area spans about 8 km, encompassing diverse habitats from sandy beaches to rocky formations and seagrass meadows.

We spent the morning exploring the area. The crisp October air and gentle sun made it ideal for a leisurely walk along the shore. The Marine Protected Area is known for its rich biodiversity, and it's considered one of the most important areas in the Mediterranean for species richness. I was excited to see if I could spot some of the local marine life. I was particularly fascinated by the Posidonia oceanica meadows, which provide shelter and food for numerous organisms. I felt a pang of nostalgia, reminiscent of the vibrant marine ecosystems back home in the Seychelles. I made a mental note to research conservation efforts in both regions, comparing the strategies and challenges faced in protecting these precious environments.
We walked along the coast, marveling at the intricate patterns formed by the waves on the sand. The water was crystal clear, and I could see small fish darting among the rocks. Hans, ever the attentive husband, pointed out various seabirds soaring overhead. It was a peaceful and serene experience, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We even saw some families enjoying the beach, their laughter echoing in the gentle breeze.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments: a walk along the shore, the taste of local cuisine, the shared laughter with loved ones.
After our refreshing morning at Torre Guaceto, we drove to Ostuni, the White City, perched dramatically on a hilltop. The sight of the whitewashed buildings gleaming under the afternoon sun was simply breathtaking. Finding parking was a bit of a challenge, but the anticipation of exploring this charming town kept our spirits high. I was eager to wander through the narrow, winding streets and soak in the atmosphere.
Lunch was at Mezza Pagnotta, a local spot known for its authentic Puglian cuisine. We decided to try some local specialties. I opted for the orecchiette with cime di rapa, a traditional pasta dish with turnip tops, while Hans chose the fave e cicoria, a hearty dish of fava beans and chicory. The food was simple yet delicious, bursting with the flavors of the region. I savored every bite, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented the town's character.

After lunch, we spent the afternoon exploring Ostuni. We strolled through the labyrinthine streets, admiring the whitewashed buildings adorned with colorful flowers. Every corner seemed to offer a new photo opportunity, and I found myself snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this enchanting town. We visited the Ostuni Cathedral, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, and climbed to the top of the city walls for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The views were simply stunning, with olive groves and vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Osteria Del Tempo Perso for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended, known for its traditional Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. It was the perfect spot to end our day of exploration. The restaurant is located in the heart of Ostuni, adding to its charm. The reviews mentioned the lovely ambiance and delicious food, and I was eager to experience it for myself.

We started with the burrata, a creamy cheese that is a Puglian specialty, and some жареный барашек (grilled lamb). For our main courses, Hans ordered the monkfish, while I chose the tiramisu. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the skill and passion of the chefs. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like honored guests. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic, perfect for a special evening. The homey decor made us feel relaxed and at ease.
After dinner, we decided to check out Bobos Wine Bar. It was a great spot to unwind and enjoy a drink after a long day of exploring. The bar is known for its cozy atmosphere and commendable selection of wines. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the lively atmosphere of the town. I ordered a glass of local red wine, while Hans opted for a beer. We chatted about our day, reminiscing about our favorite moments and planning our adventures for tomorrow. The reviews online mentioned the friendly service, which we definitely experienced. It was the perfect way to end our day in Ostuni.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Cave of Poetry, a natural pool surrounded by stunning rock formations. I’ve read so much about its beauty, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. We also plan to visit the Puglia Design Store to pick up some souvenirs [Day Number 6].
Reflecting on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Puglia. From the pristine shores of Torre Guaceto to the enchanting streets of Ostuni, every moment has been a treasure. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I can't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring.
