Exploring the Charm of Puglia with My Love
Day 1: A Whirlwind Start: Discovering the Soul of Bari Vecchia
Exploring Bari's historic heart, indulging in local cuisine, and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. A perfect start to our Puglia adventure!
Bari, Ti Amo!
Our Puglian adventure has officially begun, and what a start it has been! After arriving in Bari and picking up our rental car, Hans and I dived headfirst into the vibrant heart of the city. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the local culture, savoring the delicious cuisine, and simply wandering through the enchanting streets. It felt like stepping back in time, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for all the discoveries that await us on this journey.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at La Chicca Restaurant. I opted for a traditional pasticciotto, a sweet pastry filled with creamy custard, while Hans enjoyed a strong Italian coffee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The restaurant had a lovely, welcoming atmosphere, and it was clear that it's a favorite among locals.

Our first stop was Bari Vecchia, the old town. This historic center is a maze of narrow streets, charming piazzas, and ancient buildings. We wandered aimlessly, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The warm October sun cast a golden glow on the stone buildings, creating a truly magical ambiance. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the essence of this captivating place. The temperature in Bari in October is comfortable, with highs around 71°F, making it perfect for walking around.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
We stumbled upon the Basilica di San Nicola, a stunning Romanesque church that houses the relics of St. Nicholas. Although we didn't go inside, the exterior was impressive enough, with its intricate carvings and imposing facade. The square in front of the basilica was bustling with activity, with locals chatting and children playing. It was a vibrant scene that perfectly captured the spirit of Bari.
As lunchtime approached, we made our way to Grotta Palazzese, a restaurant built into a cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea. This place is truly unique, and the views were simply breathtaking. While the setting was undeniably romantic, the prices were quite steep. We decided to splurge a little and ordered the seafood tasting menu, which was a culinary journey in itself. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The fresh seafood, combined with the stunning setting, made for an unforgettable dining experience. Reservations are definitely recommended, as this place is very popular.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of Bari Vecchia, discovering hidden courtyards, artisan workshops, and charming cafes. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs, including a hand-painted ceramic plate and a bottle of local olive oil. It's these little treasures that will remind me of our time in Puglia long after we've returned home.
For dinner, we opted for a more casual experience at Ciacco E Bacco - Ristorante e Sala Ricevimenti. This restaurant is known for its traditional Puglian cuisine, and we were eager to try some local specialties. We shared a plate of orecchiette pasta with cime di rapa (turnip tops), a classic dish from the region. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the cime di rapa had a slightly bitter flavor that was incredibly satisfying. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.

To cap off our first day, we decided to experience Bari's nightlife with a visit to La Ciclatera, a popular bar known for its cocktails. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I ordered an Aperol spritz, a classic Italian cocktail, while Hans opted for a local beer. We sat outside, soaking in the atmosphere and watching the world go by. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we strolled along the Lungomare, the waterfront promenade, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. The city lights twinkled in the distance, creating a magical ambiance. As we walked, we reflected on all the incredible experiences we had today. From exploring the historic streets of Bari Vecchia to indulging in the local cuisine, it was a day filled with discovery and delight.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Alberobello, famous for its unique trulli houses. I'm particularly excited to see these traditional dwellings up close and learn more about their history. We'll also visit Murgia dei Trulli di Alberobello, a beautiful natural area surrounding the town. For meals, we're planning to try U.P.E.P.I.D.D.E. Restaurant for breakfast, The Ciacco's Tavern Restaurant for lunch and L'Antica Locanda for dinner. And I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs at The Smallest Trulli of Alberobello - Artesan Shop. I can't wait to share our adventures with you!
Thinking back to my home in Anse Boileau, Seychelles, I felt a familiar pang of nostalgia. The warmth of the people, the vibrant culture, and the stunning natural beauty of Puglia reminded me of the island life I miss so dearly. It's these connections to familiar comforts that make traveling so enriching, bridging the gap between the known and the unknown.
It was a day filled with the simple joys of travel: good food, captivating sights, and the pleasure of sharing it all with my beloved Hans. As we drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what other hidden gems Puglia has in store for us. Stay tuned for more adventures!
