Immerse yourself in Ria Formosa's natural beauty with eco-boat tours, birdwatching at São Lourenço, and delightful local cuisine.
A Warm Welcome to Ria Formosa
The journey to new destinations always fills me with a mix of excitement and anticipation, and today was no exception. Leaving Bonn behind for a bit, I traded the familiar Rhine for the sun-kissed shores of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park. As someone deeply passionate about marine biology and island conservation, I couldn’t wait to dive into the natural wonders this place had to offer. Today was all about first impressions, and Ria Formosa certainly didn’t disappoint!
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Ria Formosa. Located in Faro, it was a perfect spot to fuel up before my adventures. The restaurant had a cozy, local feel, and I decided to try their special breakfast menu which included a selection of fresh pastries, local cheese, and strong coffee. It was exactly what I needed to kickstart my day.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed to Lands - Ria Formosa Natural Park Eco Boat Tours. The main reason I chose this specific tour was its commitment to sustainability. The idea of gliding through the waterways on a solar-powered boat was incredibly appealing. I met with the tour guide, a friendly local named Miguel, who was extremely passionate about the park's ecosystem. As we boarded the boat, I noticed it was small and intimate, perfect for a personal experience.

The eco-boat tour was nothing short of magical. The gentle hum of the electric motor allowed us to move silently through the water, minimizing any disturbance to the wildlife. The views were breathtaking. I was immediately struck by the vastness of the lagoon, dotted with small islands and sandbars. Miguel pointed out various bird species, including flamingos and herons, explaining their roles in the ecosystem. He also shared interesting facts about the history and formation of the Ria Formosa, a topic I found particularly fascinating.
The beauty of nature lies in its details, and Ria Formosa is a masterpiece of intricate ecosystems and vibrant life.
One of the highlights of the boat tour was learning about the park's efforts in conserving the local flora and fauna. Miguel explained how the park manages the delicate balance between tourism and preservation, a cause that deeply resonates with me. It reminded me of the conservation efforts back in Seychelles, and it felt good to see similar dedication here in Portugal.
After the boat tour, I decided to explore the São Lourenço Bird Hide. Armed with my binoculars and camera, essentials I always carry, I set off on a short hike to the hide. The trail was easy to navigate, winding through lush vegetation and offering glimpses of the lagoon. As I approached the hide, I could already hear the sounds of various birds chirping and calling.

The São Lourenço Bird Hide turned out to be a birdwatcher’s paradise. The hide itself was well-maintained and offered a panoramic view of a freshwater lake, teeming with birdlife. I spent a couple of hours there, patiently observing and photographing the different species. I spotted black-winged stilts, little egrets, and various types of ducks. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level.
I did, however, realize I had forgotten to pack insect repellent. The mosquitoes were quite persistent, a small oversight that I quickly regretted. Note to self: always double-check the essentials list! I also wished I had brought my swimwear as there were spots where a quick dip would have been amazing.
As the afternoon approached, I decided it was time for lunch. I made my way to Restaurante Estaminé, located on Ilha Deserta. Getting there involved a short ferry ride, which added to the adventure. The restaurant is renowned for its fresh seafood and unique location on a deserted island. The setting was idyllic, with stunning views of the ocean and the Ria Formosa.

I opted for the grilled sea bass, a local specialty. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, perfectly complemented by a simple salad and boiled potatoes. I savored every bite, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the gentle sea breeze. Restaurante Estaminé is also an eco-friendly establishment, generating its own solar energy and producing potable water which I found very admirable.
With the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, I decided to treat myself to a pre-dinner drink at Cantaloupe. This bar was recommended to me by a local as a great spot with a view of Ria Formosa. Cantaloupe had a laid-back vibe, with comfortable seating and a wide selection of drinks. I ordered a glass of local wine and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For my final meal of the day, I chose Casa do Lago, a restaurant known for its stunning lakeside location and diverse menu. The restaurant had a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere, and I was seated at a table with a perfect view of the water. I decided to try their seafood cataplana, a traditional Portuguese stew. It was a rich and flavorful dish, filled with fresh clams, shrimp, and mussels. It was a delightful culinary experience.

As I reflect on my first day in Ria Formosa, I am filled with gratitude and excitement. The eco-boat tour provided a unique perspective on the park's ecosystem, while the bird hide offered a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level. Each meal was a culinary adventure, showcasing the region's fresh and flavorful ingredients. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes exploring more of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, visiting the Stork and Cormorant Rookery, and hiking the Ludo Trail.
Tomorrow I plan to explore more of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, visit the Stork and Cormorant Rookery, and hike the Ludo Trail. Before that, I will have breakfast at Maria's Restaurant and Beach, Algarve. Lunch will be at 2 Passos, and dinner at The Bold Octopus. I also plan to shop at MAR Shopping Algarve. I am also excited to see what other hidden gems this beautiful region has to offer. I have a feeling this solo journey will be one for the books.
Before heading back to my accommodation for the night, I took a moment to sit by the water, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. The stars were beginning to appear, and the night sky was clear and vast. It was a peaceful and serene moment, a perfect ending to a perfect day. I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore Ria Formosa, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
