A Day of Coastal Charms

The salty air, the cry of gulls, the gentle rocking of a boat – there's something inherently soothing about island life. Today was all about embracing that rhythm, letting the natural beauty and the simple pleasures of Ria Formosa wash over me. It was a day of sun-kissed skin, delicious food, and moments of quiet reflection, a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation in this coastal paradise.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at 2 Passos. I had heard whispers about this restaurant, perched right on the beach, and it did not disappoint. The morning sun streamed through the large windows, illuminating the minimalistic, Scandic-looking wooden interior. I ordered a simple but satisfying breakfast of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee, while enjoying the panoramic view of Praia do Anção. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With my stomach content and spirit high, I set off to explore the Ria Formosa Nature Park itself. I decided to take a boat tour with Estrela da Ria Formosa, eager to experience the park from the water. The boat was comfortable, and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights about the park's ecosystem and the diverse birdlife that calls it home. As we cruised through the lagoon, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding me.

The beauty of Ria Formosa isn't just in its picturesque landscapes, but in the way it invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and connect with the natural world.

One of the highlights of the boat tour was our stop at Ilha Deserta, also known as Barreta Island. This long, sandy island is the southernmost point of Portugal, a tranquil escape far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island is a part of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and a haven for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. I strolled along the pristine beach, the only sound the gentle lapping of the waves and the distant cry of seagulls. It was incredibly peaceful, a chance to clear my head and simply be present in the moment. I even took a refreshing dip in the ocean, the cool water a welcome contrast to the warm sun.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurante Estaminé, the only restaurant on Ilha Deserta. The restaurant itself is a charming, all-wood structure that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape. It felt like a true oasis, a place where you could savor delicious food while surrounded by the beauty of nature. I opted for a traditional Algarvian dish of xarém with seafood from the estuary, a flavorful and satisfying meal that perfectly captured the essence of the region. I savored every bite, appreciating the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. The restaurant is known for its sustainable practices, utilizing solar energy and treating its own water, which aligns perfectly with my values.

After lunch, I spent some more time exploring Ilha Deserta, discovering hidden coves and secluded spots. I even tried my hand at birdwatching, using my binoculars to spot some of the many species that inhabit the island. It was fascinating to observe these creatures in their natural habitat, a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of Ria Formosa.

As the afternoon drew to a close, it was time to head back to the mainland. The boat ride back was just as enjoyable as the ride out, the setting sun casting a golden glow over the lagoon. I watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, a breathtaking display of nature's artistry. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to experience a bit of Faro's nightlife. I stopped by Call In Faro, a bar known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I ordered a local beer and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the city and its culture. The bar had a nice vibe, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying a relaxed evening. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring, a chance to soak up the local atmosphere and connect with new people.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Gigi's Beach restaurant Quinta do Lago. The restaurant is located right on the beach, offering stunning views of the ocean. I indulged in grilled prawns and sea bass, savoring the fresh, flavorful seafood. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was lively, with music and laughter filling the air. Although some reviewers mention high prices, I found the experience to be worth the splurge, a perfect way to celebrate a day of coastal adventures.

As I walked back to my accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. Ria Formosa had truly captured my heart, its natural beauty, delicious food, and friendly people creating a lasting impression. It was a day of simple pleasures, of connecting with nature and embracing the island lifestyle. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the Algarve coast, with a visit to Lands - Eco Boat Tours and Praia da Rocha. I'm eager to see what other hidden gems this region has to offer, and to continue my journey of self-discovery in this beautiful corner of the world.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about the boat tour with Lands - Eco Boat Tours. Their commitment to sustainable tourism resonates with me, and I'm eager to explore the Ria Formosa in an environmentally friendly way. I'm also looking forward to visiting Praia da Rocha, a beach known for its stunning cliffs and golden sands. It will be a chance to soak up the sun, take a refreshing swim, and simply enjoy the beauty of the Algarve coast. And who knows, maybe I'll even find some inspiration for my next blog post!
