Exploring the Mystical Caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Day 1: First Impressions of Phong Nha-Ke Bang: A Breathtaking Start
Discovering the beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park on day one, from delicious local cuisine to stunning natural landscapes.
A Warm Welcome to Vietnam's Cave Kingdom
After a long journey from Montreal, via Hanoi and Dong Hoi, Jean-Pierre and I finally arrived in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The anticipation had been building for months, ever since we decided to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site. I must admit, as someone who grew up in Madagascar, I’ve always been drawn to places with unique natural landscapes, and Phong Nha, with its ancient karst mountains and extensive cave systems, seemed like the perfect destination.
The journey itself was quite smooth. Our flights were uneventful, and the scenic drive from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha offered a tantalizing glimpse of the beauty that awaited us. The landscape transformed from bustling cityscapes to serene countryside, with glimpses of limestone karsts in the distance. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as we approached our destination.

Our first day was all about settling in and soaking up the atmosphere. We hadn't booked accommodation in advance, wanting to get a feel for the area first, but that didn't prove to be an issue at all. We quickly found a charming guesthouse that offered a perfect blend of comfort and local hospitality. After dropping off our bags, our priority was food. I was already dreaming of the delicious Vietnamese cuisine I had read so much about.
We started our culinary journey with breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. Nestled along the Son River, the restaurant offered a beautiful view of the surrounding karst mountains. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurous one, decided on the Victory Breakfast, a hearty plate of eggs, sausage, bacon and all the trimmings. The food was delicious, and the setting was simply perfect. The Villas Restaurant seems to be well-regarded in the area, especially for its western dishes.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to be immersed in the local culture and natural beauty, without any rigid plans or expectations.
Later in the morning, we decided to explore the local shops. Phong Nha Collection caught my eye with its display of locally crafted garments. As someone who appreciates cultural artistry, I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the clothing. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silk scarf, a perfect memento of our first day in Phong Nha. Jean-Pierre found a comfortable linen shirt, ideal for the warm, humid weather. The store itself seemed to be more than just a shop; it was a celebration of Vietnamese culture and craftsmanship.

For lunch, we ventured to Son Doong Restaurant, drawn in by its rustic charm and promise of authentic Vietnamese flavors. We shared a set platter featuring a variety of local dishes, each bursting with fresh herbs and spices. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made our dining experience truly memorable. It was a delightful introduction to the regional cuisine, and I was already looking forward to trying more local delicacies throughout our trip. It was the perfect spot for a relaxed meal, allowing us to savor the flavors of Vietnam while soaking in the tranquil ambiance.

In the afternoon, we took a leisurely stroll through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The park itself is a sight to behold, with its towering limestone karsts, lush tropical forests, and winding rivers. We didn't have time for any serious hiking today, but we enjoyed a relaxing walk along one of the many trails, taking in the breathtaking scenery. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of nature were incredibly soothing. We even spotted a few colorful birds flitting through the trees. The park is home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, and I was eager to explore more of its natural wonders in the coming days.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with colorful lanterns illuminating the space. The reviews I read mentioned that this restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes, fresh seafood, and vegetarian options. I decided to try the mushroom and tofu clay pot, while Jean-Pierre opted for a seafood dish. Both were absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. The Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant seems to be a popular spot, known for its cozy atmosphere, excellent service, and authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

The weather in Phong Nha in December is quite pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 22°C. It's mildly cool and breezy, making it ideal for exploring the outdoors. However, it can also be rainy, so it's important to pack accordingly. I made a mental note to buy some insect repellent tomorrow, as I seemed to have forgotten it at home. Good thing I remembered to pack my hiking boots and lightweight clothing. It's also good to have a light jacket for the evenings.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave. I'm particularly excited about exploring Phong Nha Cave by boat, as I've heard it's an unforgettable experience. The boat trip along the Son River is supposed to be incredibly scenic, and I'm eager to see the stunning rock formations inside the cave. I'm also looking forward to visiting Tien Son Cave, which is said to be just as impressive. We'll start the day with breakfast at Bamboo Chopsticks, followed by lunch at Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha and dinner at The Rice House. In the evening, we might check out King Kong Bar Phong Nha.
