Day 5: Coastal Wonders and Island Charms: Discovering Masoala's Hidden Gems
Explore the stunning Cap Baldrisy & serene Nosy Nepato in Masoala National Park. A day of coastal beauty, island charm, and Malagasy culture.
A Day of Coastal Exploration
Today was a day of breathtaking coastal views and serene island escapes. Masoala National Park continues to surprise and enchant us with its diverse landscapes and hidden gems. I'm eager to share the highlights of our fifth day in this Malagasy paradise.
Our day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at the Masoala Forest Lodge. The lodge is nestled in a sheltered cove, surrounded by the rainforest, offering a tranquil start to the day. The gentle sounds of the forest and the ocean create a blissful atmosphere. After breakfast, we set off to explore the wonders of Cap Baldrisy.

Cap Baldrisy: Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea
Cap Baldrisy is a serene tourist attraction that perfectly blends stunning landscapes with rich biodiversity. The journey there was an adventure in itself, requiring a combination of driving and a bit of a hike. As we approached, the views opened up to reveal a dramatic cape where the lush rainforest meets the turquoise sea. It’s one of those places where you feel utterly insignificant yet completely connected to the natural world.
We spent a good part of the morning exploring the trails around Cap Baldrisy. The trails offer views of the coastline and opportunities to spot local wildlife. The air was fresh and filled with the sounds of exotic birds, a symphony that’s unique to Madagascar. I made sure to pack snacks and water, as amenities are limited in the area.
Jean-Pierre, ever the enthusiastic photographer, was in his element, capturing the panoramic views and the intricate details of the flora. I tried my hand at sketching some of the unique plant life, a hobby I've been neglecting since our move to Montreal. It felt good to reconnect with that part of myself, inspired by the raw beauty around me.
The beauty of Masoala lies not just in its landscapes, but in the way it makes you feel – connected, humbled, and utterly alive.
A Taste of Local Flavors
For lunch, we decided to try Aero Pizza in Maroantsetra. It might seem odd to have pizza in Madagascar, but I had read some good reviews, and we were curious to see how they incorporate local flavors. The restaurant was a bit of a drive from Cap Baldrisy, but the change of scenery was welcome. Aero Pizza offers both traditional Italian styles and unique local twists. We ordered a Margherita pizza and a specialty pie with local ingredients. It was a surprisingly delightful meal, and the local twist gave it a unique Malagasy touch.

Island Escape to Nosy Nepato
In the afternoon, we took a boat trip to Nosy Nepato, a stunning island known for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The boat ride itself was a treat, with the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces. As we approached Nosy Nepato, the crystal-clear waters and lush tropical vegetation were a sight to behold.

Nosy Nepato is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. We spent the afternoon snorkeling in the pristine waters, exploring the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. The underwater world was a kaleidoscope of colors, with fish of all shapes and sizes darting around us. I even spotted a sea turtle, gracefully gliding through the water.
After snorkeling, we took a leisurely hike through the island's trails. The trails showcased the island's unique flora and fauna, including various endemic species. Birdwatching enthusiasts would be in paradise here, with a diverse avian population to observe. We also had the chance to interact with some friendly locals, learning about their traditional way of life.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the mainland, filled with memories of our island escape. The sky was painted with hues of orange and pink, creating a breathtaking backdrop to our boat ride.
A Little Shopping and a Relaxing Dinner
Before dinner, we stopped by Boutique CAEL COM in Maroantsetra. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to take back home. The boutique specializes in unique and handcrafted items that embody the rich cultural heritage of Madagascar. I found some intricate local artwork and charming souvenirs. The staff was friendly and shared the stories behind the pieces. It was a great way to support local artisans and take home a piece of Madagascar with us.
