Antalaha's Allure: A Day of Discovery
Today, I found myself completely captivated by the unique charm of Antalaha. This coastal town, known as the vanilla capital of Madagascar, offered a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and sensory delights that I couldn't resist sharing. From strolling along its inviting beach to savoring local flavors, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Masoala Forest Lodge. The spread was a colorful array of fresh fruits, local pastries, and strong Malagasy coffee – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Jean-Pierre, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the sunrise, while I savored the tranquility of the morning, knowing we had a full day ahead of us [TravelWith].

After breakfast, we set off to explore Antalaha itself. The town has a relaxed, welcoming vibe, and the air is subtly perfumed with the sweet scent of vanilla, a constant reminder of the region's primary industry. Antalaha is a pleasant, green, and flowery city that smells of vanilla many months of the year. We wandered through the local market, a vibrant hub of activity where vendors sell everything from fresh produce to colorful textiles. I couldn't resist picking up a few handwoven baskets, perfect for storing spices back in Montreal.
The beauty of Madagascar lies not just in its landscapes, but in the warmth and resilience of its people.
Next on our list was the Beach of Antalaha. The sand was soft and inviting, and the turquoise waters beckoned us for a swim. Jean-Pierre and I took a leisurely stroll along the shore, collecting seashells and enjoying the gentle sea breeze. The beach wasn't crowded, which allowed us to fully appreciate the serenity of the surroundings. It was the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Madagascar.

For lunch, we decided to try Grill du Rova, a local restaurant known for its grilled seafood. We ordered a platter of grilled fish, shrimp, and calamari, all freshly caught and expertly seasoned. The flavors were incredible, and the meal was made even better by the friendly service and the laid-back atmosphere of the restaurant. It was a true taste of Madagascar, and I savored every bite.

In the afternoon, I was eager to explore the local art scene, so we headed to Lisy Art Gallery. This gallery is known for its collection of arts and crafts designed to appeal to the tourist market. Located a short taxi ride from the center of town, here you'll find an impressive collection of arts and crafts. As someone who appreciates unique souvenirs, I was excited to see what treasures I could find. The gallery was a treasure trove of Malagasy creativity, showcasing everything from wood carvings and paintings to textiles and jewelry. I was particularly drawn to a series of vibrant paintings depicting local landscapes and wildlife. After much deliberation, I chose a small, intricately carved wooden lemur as a memento of our trip.

The Lisy Art Gallery is open from Monday to Saturday. The prices are fixed and a little more expensive than at the local markets. Perks include being able to pay by card, not worrying about pickpockets and the gallery's affiliated restaurant.
Before dinner, we took some time to explore the vanilla plantations that surround Antalaha. These plantations are the heart of the region's economy, and it was fascinating to learn about the process of growing and harvesting vanilla. The air was thick with the sweet, intoxicating aroma of the vanilla beans, and I felt a deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the local farmers. Vanilla cultivation in Madagascar is mainly concentrated in a region known as the SAVA region. It corresponds to the initials of the main production towns, namely Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar and Andapa.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Zandina for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The menu featured a mix of Malagasy and international dishes, and I opted for a traditional Malagasy curry. The flavors were rich and complex, and the dish was a perfect representation of the local cuisine. Jean-Pierre, always the adventurous eater, tried a local seafood specialty and declared it delicious.

After dinner, we took a final stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool night air and the sound of the waves. The stars were out in full force, and the sky was a canvas of twinkling lights. It was a magical end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that Antalaha is more than just a vanilla capital; it's a place of warmth, beauty, and cultural richness. It's a town where the scent of vanilla mingles with the sea breeze, where the smiles of the locals are as bright as the tropical sun, and where every corner holds a new adventure. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this unique corner of Madagascar.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ambalatelo parc and Varingohitra. I am looking forward to discovering more of what this region has to offer. I'm also hoping we can find some time to relax at Zanzibar Nouvelle Vague in the evening!

There are several restaurants in Antalaha. Chez Joice is known for its diverse menu featuring local Malagasy delicacies and international favorites. La Terrasse offers a cozy atmosphere with both local and international dishes. Restaurant Le Corail offers European cuisine with grilled dishes and pizzas.
As the sun sets on another incredible day in Madagascar, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement for what tomorrow will bring. Until then, veloma (goodbye) from Antalaha!
