Exploring the Wild Beauty of Snaefellsnes Peninsula with Jean-Pierre
Day 8: A Day of Serenity and Hidden Gems on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Discover the tranquil beauty of Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula with a visit to Snorrastadir Farm and the hidden Bæjarfoss waterfall.
Finding Peace in the Icelandic Countryside
Today was all about embracing the quiet side of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a welcome change of pace after our more adventurous days. Jean-Pierre and I set out to explore some lesser-known spots, hoping to find a deeper connection with Iceland's natural beauty. The day unfolded into a series of delightful surprises and peaceful moments.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic breakfast, while Jean-Pierre opted for something a bit more familiar. The views of the coastline were stunning, even in the early morning light. Fuelled up and ready to go, we set off towards our first destination: Snorrastadir Farm Holidays.
The drive to Snorrastadir was beautiful. As we drove, the landscape shifted from rugged coastline to rolling green hills. We passed fields dotted with Icelandic horses, their manes blowing in the wind. It felt like a scene straight out of a postcard. When we arrived at Snorrastadir Farm Holidays, we were immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The farm is nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains and offering inspiring landscape views. The vacation homes were charming, each with its own unique character. We took a leisurely stroll around the property, enjoying the peace and quiet. I could easily imagine spending a week here, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places.
After soaking in the serenity of Snorrastadir, we decided to seek out a hidden gem: Bæjarfoss waterfall. I had read about this waterfall in a local guidebook and was intrigued by its description as a 'stunning waterfall near Ólafsvík' offering a 'breathtaking sight for nature lovers'. The drive to Bæjarfoss took us through more of the peninsula's stunning landscapes. We passed through small villages, each with its own unique charm. When we finally arrived at the trailhead, we were excited to stretch our legs and explore.
The hike to Bæjarfoss was relatively easy, though the trail was a bit muddy in places. As we walked, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building our anticipation. Finally, we rounded a bend and there it was: Bæjarfoss. The waterfall cascaded down a rocky cliff, surrounded by lush greenery. It was even more beautiful than I had imagined. We spent some time taking photos and simply enjoying the view. The raw power of the water was mesmerizing, and the peaceful surroundings made it feel like we were the only people in the world.

For lunch, we stopped at Agnið streetfood in Stykkishólmur. This vibrant little spot is known for its Icelandic flavors, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I opted for the fish and chips, which were made with freshly caught cod and were absolutely delicious. Jean-Pierre tried one of their gourmet burgers, which he raved about. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of our day.

After lunch, we popped into Valeria Specialty Coffee & souvenirs. I couldn't resist picking up a bag of their house-roasted coffee beans. Apparently, Valeria roasts their own imported Colombian beans in a colorful coffeehouse overlooked by Kirkjufell, and the combination of refreshing specialty coffees, delightful handmade souvenirs and comfy armchairs was too enticing to pass up. It's a charming little place, and I'm looking forward to brewing some Icelandic coffee back in Montreal.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Hótel Snaefellsnes for dinner. The hotel restaurant is known for its traditional Icelandic dinners, and we were eager to try some local specialties. The meal was delicious, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that sometimes the most rewarding travel experiences are the ones that aren't planned. Our spontaneous decision to explore Snorrastadir Farm Holidays and Bæjarfoss waterfall led us to discover some truly special places. It reminded me that travel isn't just about seeing famous landmarks; it's about connecting with nature, immersing yourself in local culture, and finding peace in the simple things. As we prepare to leave the Snaefellsnes Peninsula tomorrow, visiting the Jules Verne monument and the Lava Rocks Formations, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared here. This journey has been a reminder of the importance of sustainable travel and the beauty of Iceland's natural wonders. I'm excited to share more of our adventures with you all soon!
