Oasis and Art Along the Skeleton Coast

Today was a day of unexpected delights, a reminder that even in the most desolate landscapes, life and beauty persist. We traded shipwrecks for waterfalls, salty air for savory meals, and sandy expanses for vibrant marketplaces. It's amazing how quickly the stark monochrome of the Skeleton Coast can give way to a burst of color and flavor.

Our morning began early, fueled by the anticipation of seeing the Uniab Waterfall. After days of traversing seemingly endless desert, the prospect of water cascading through rock felt like a mirage about to materialize. The drive itself was captivating; the landscape shifted subtly, revealing hidden canyons and dramatic rock formations. I couldn't help but think of Ana and Luka back in Zurich, wondering what they would make of this starkly beautiful place. I made a mental note to find a unique piece of jewelry at the craft center for Ana, something to remind her of the trip, and maybe a small wooden animal carving for Luka. I miss them dearly, but I know that this adventure will provide me with stories to tell for years to come. Finally, we arrived at the Uniab Waterfall. It wasn't Niagara, but in this context, it was a true oasis. The water, though not a torrent due to the season, trickled down the rock face, creating a serene and almost surreal atmosphere. The sound of the water was incredibly soothing after the constant hum of the car and the whisper of the wind. We spent a good hour simply taking it all in, snapping photos, and feeling the cool mist on our faces. It was a welcome respite from the desert heat. I even managed to capture a few decent shots with my camera, although I wished I hadn't forgotten my sandproof phone case – the fine dust here gets into everything!

The desert reveals its secrets not in grand gestures, but in the subtle whispers of life that persist against all odds.
After our refreshing interlude at the waterfall, it was time to head back towards civilization, or at least, what passes for it out here. We stopped for breakfast at Farmhouse Deli, and it was a delightful surprise. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was intoxicating, and the food was simply divine. I opted for a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and local sausage, while my friends went for the pastries and freshly squeezed juices. It was a welcome change from our camp fare, and the friendly service made it even better. It reminded me of the cozy cafes in Škofja Loka, where I spent many mornings as a student, dreaming of adventures far beyond Slovenia. I made sure to try some of their home-made deli products, and bought some cakes for the road.
For lunch, we decided to try BlueGrass in Swakopmund, and it was another excellent choice. The restaurant boasts a stunning ocean view, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. I had grilled fish with a side of roasted vegetables, and it was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The restaurant was modern and classy, with a great variety of food. I particularly enjoyed the deep-fried calamari with garlic butter sauce.
In the late afternoon, we made our way to Windhoek, where we planned to have dinner and do some shopping. Before dinner, we visited the Namibia Craft Centre. This bustling marketplace is a treasure trove of Namibian arts and crafts, offering everything from jewelry and wood carvings to textiles and traditional clothing. I was immediately drawn to the intricate beadwork and the vibrant colors of the fabrics. I spent a considerable amount of time browsing the stalls, chatting with the local artisans, and learning about their craft. It was fascinating to see the skill and artistry that goes into each piece, and I was impressed by the dedication and passion of the craftspeople. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-woven rug for our living room in Zurich and a few smaller items as gifts for family and friends. I also found a delicate ostrich-eggshell necklace for Ana, which I hope she’ll like.
For dinner, we decided to splurge at Leo's at the Castle. Located in a historic castle overlooking Windhoek, this restaurant offers a fine-dining experience with a focus on international fusion cuisine. The ambiance was elegant and romantic, and the views of the city skyline were breathtaking. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art in itself. I had a perfectly cooked steak with a side of truffle mashed potatoes, and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The wine list was extensive, and our sommelier helped us choose a bottle of South African red that paired perfectly with our meal. It was the perfect end to a day of adventure and discovery.
As I sit here now, writing this in my journal under the soft glow of a solar-powered lamp, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. From the serene beauty of the Uniab Waterfall to the vibrant energy of the Namibia Craft Centre, today was a reminder that even in the most remote corners of the world, there is beauty to be found and culture to be celebrated. I am also grateful for the reminder of the comforts of civilization after roughing it in the desert for a few days. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure to Epupa Falls, but for now, I’ll rest well, dreaming of cascading water and colorful crafts. I'll make sure to pack extra warm clothing this time, learning from my mistake.
And before I forget, there are a few events happening in Namibia in September, including the Liefie ka Felix Fun Day, and several international conferences. It seems like there's always something going on in this vibrant country.
Tomorrow we are heading to Epupa Falls, I am looking forward to see the beauty of it. We will have breakfast at Ocean Cellar, lunch at Fishy Corner Restaurant and dinner at Warung Madura. I am also hoping to spend some time at The Wolfshack bar.
