Whispers of the Skeleton Coast

Today was a day of stark contrasts, a journey that took us from the lively, German-infused atmosphere of Swakopmund to the hauntingly beautiful isolation of the Skeleton Coast. It’s a transition that’s hard to put into words, a shift in landscape and mindset that feels almost otherworldly. Leaving behind the familiar comforts, we ventured deeper into Namibia's wild heart, a place where the desert meets the sea in a symphony of solitude and raw beauty.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Swakopmund Brauhaus. It felt like stepping into a piece of Bavaria right here in Namibia. The hearty German fare was exactly what we needed to fuel up for the long drive ahead. I opted for the fish soup, and it was delicious. The atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the gemütlich vibe. It was a great start to the day, and I made a mental note to return for a proper Schweinshaxe sometime.

After breakfast, we took a stroll along the Swakopmund waterfront, soaking in the last moments of civilization before our desert adventure. The town has a certain charm, with its colonial architecture and bustling streets. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos of the iconic lighthouse against the backdrop of the Atlantic. It's these little moments that I cherish, capturing the essence of a place before moving on to the next chapter of our journey.

Our lunch stop was at Anchors Waterfront Restaurant in Walvis Bay. Situated right on the water's edge, the views were stunning. We watched pelicans and seals frolic in the waves as we enjoyed some fresh seafood. I had the grilled calamari, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was a quintessential seaside experience, a perfect way to savor the coastal flavors before heading inland.

The Skeleton Coast isn't just a place; it's a feeling, a reminder of nature's power and the delicate balance of life.

The drive to Shipwreck Lodge was an adventure in itself. The landscape gradually transformed from sandy beaches to rugged desert plains. The further we drove, the more desolate it became. We passed through seemingly endless stretches of gravel and sand, with the occasional shipwreck carcass serving as a stark reminder of the coast's treacherous nature. It's a landscape that demands respect, a place where survival is a constant challenge. The silence was profound, broken only by the sound of our vehicle and the occasional gust of wind. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of city life back in Zurich. I found myself reflecting on the simple things in life, the beauty of nature, and the importance of human connection.

Finally, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we arrived at Shipwreck Lodge. The lodge itself is an architectural marvel, with cabins designed to resemble the shipwrecks that dot the coastline. The cabins rise eerily from the dunes, offering a surreal and captivating sight. Stepping inside, we were greeted by plush interiors, a stark contrast to the harsh environment outside. The main lodge is cozy and inviting, with a wood-burning stove and comfortable seating areas.

After settling in, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the lodge's restaurant. The food was top-notch, and the service was impeccable. The dining room is reminiscent of an old ship's dining room, adding to the unique atmosphere. We shared stories and laughter over a bottle of Namibian wine, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a remote and extraordinary place.

Unfortunately, there was no time to visit MYNT Nightclub and Lounge for a nightcap. Perhaps next time, I will plan my trip differently to visit this night club.

As I sit here now, writing this from the comfort of my cabin, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The Skeleton Coast is a place that gets under your skin, a place that challenges your perceptions and leaves you forever changed. It's a reminder of the power of nature, the resilience of life, and the importance of embracing the unknown.

Tomorrow, we'll be exploring more of this incredible landscape, including a visit to the Uniab Waterfall [Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I'm excited to see what other wonders await us in this remote corner of the world. I am also looking forward to the Farmhouse Deli for breakfast, BlueGrass for Lunch and Leo's at the Castle for dinner [Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I am also planning to buy some souvenirs at the Namibia Craft Centre [Itinerary of Tomorrow].

For now, I'm going to savor the silence and solitude of the Skeleton Coast, knowing that this is an experience I'll never forget.

Before signing off, I must admit that I forgot to pack a sandproof phone case and extra warm clothing. These are definitely essential for a trip like this, and I'll be sure to add them to my packing list for future adventures. It's always the little things that can make a big difference in your comfort and enjoyment, a lesson I'm constantly learning on the road.

Good night from the Skeleton Coast!

After dinner, my friends and I shared travel stories and laughed. The experience of traveling with friends always adds a special dimension to any trip. Their perspectives and companionship enrich the journey, creating memories that we'll cherish for years to come. I am so grateful for these experiences. I am also grateful for my wife, Ana, and my son, Luka, who always support my travels.
