A Valley Etched in Memory

As our Douro Valley adventure draws to a close, it feels like we're not just leaving a place, but a part of ourselves behind. The terraced vineyards, the winding river, and the warmth of the Portuguese people have woven their way into our hearts. Today, our final day, was a celebration of all that makes this region so special.

We began our day with breakfast at Terraçu's Restaurant. The restaurant is located in the first established winery of the Douro Valley. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for a day of exploration and reflection. The clear morning, with periodic clouds, offered a comfortable 16°C, perfect for soaking in the views one last time. I savored the local pastries and strong coffee, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. It's funny how a simple meal can become a cherished memory when shared in such a beautiful setting.

Our first stop was Quinta de Santa Marinha for some Douro Valley Wine Tourism. The drive there was, as always, breathtaking. The Quinta itself was amazing! The views of the Douro Valley were stunning, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of the vineyards. We indulged in a wine tasting, savoring the complex flavors of the local wines. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on our journey and appreciate the artistry that goes into each bottle. I picked up a bottle of their Ânfora de Santa Marinha Merlot to bring back home. I am curious to see how it compares to Slovenian Merlot. Ana will be thrilled!

Next on our itinerary was the Miradouro da Foz do Tedo. The views of the Douro River meeting the Tedo River were spectacular, framed by the terraced vineyards. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. It's a spot where the beauty of nature and the ingenuity of man come together in perfect harmony. I made a mental note to try and replicate some of these views in my photography back home in Switzerland. It will be a great challenge!

For lunch, we ventured to Casa do Arco by Douro Exclusive. The reviews I had read raved about the food and the views, and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent, and the service was impeccable. The restaurant itself had a quaint, charming atmosphere with unbelievable views! I opted for one of the Chef's menus and was blown away by the quality and presentation of each dish. It was a culinary experience that I won't soon forget. I was so glad that it was an adults-only restaurant, as it allowed us to have a relaxing and quiet meal with friends.

In the afternoon, we made a stop at Quinta do Pôpa. I was eager to explore their selection of wines and perhaps pick up a few bottles to take home. We ended up buying a bottle of their bio-certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The property is located on the hillside of EN 222, in Tabuaço municipality, the heart of Douro Valley Wine Region. The vines and olive groves were beautiful and planted using old-school methods. I chatted with one of the staff members, learning about their sustainable practices and commitment to preserving the land. It's inspiring to see a winery that is so dedicated to both quality and environmental responsibility.

Our final dinner was at Restaurante Da Azenha. It was the perfect way to end our trip. The restaurant is nestled in a charming old mill, and the ambiance was rustic and inviting. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Portuguese cuisine, savoring each bite and reminiscing about our adventures in the Douro Valley. The restaurant is known for its good cozido à Portuguesa, soup and steaks. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. I raised a glass of local wine, toasting to friendship, adventure, and the beauty of the Douro Valley.

As I sit here tonight, reflecting on our 11-day journey, I am filled with gratitude. The Douro Valley has exceeded all of my expectations. It's a place of breathtaking beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. I am so grateful to have shared this experience with my friends. I know that we will all cherish these memories for years to come.

This trip reminded me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. The taste of a perfectly ripe grape, the sound of the river flowing, the warmth of the sun on my skin – these are the moments that truly matter. As a software engineer, I often get caught up in the fast-paced world of technology. This trip has been a reminder to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and the people I care about. Ana and Luka would have loved this place!

I am also struck by the resilience and ingenuity of the people who have shaped this landscape over centuries. The terraced vineyards are a testament to their hard work and dedication. It's a reminder that anything is possible with perseverance and a deep connection to the land.

As we prepare to leave the Douro Valley tomorrow, I know that a part of me will always remain here. I will carry the memories of this trip with me, and I hope to return someday to explore even more of this beautiful region. Until then, I will continue to share my experiences and inspire others to discover the wonders of the Douro Valley. I can't wait to share my photos and stories with Ana and Luka. I know they will be eager to hear all about my adventures.

I'm already looking forward to planning our next family trip. Perhaps we'll explore Slovenia together, showing Luka the beauty of our homeland. Or maybe we'll venture to a new corner of the world, discovering new cultures and landscapes. Whatever we do, I know that it will be an adventure filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

The Douro Valley has been more than just a trip; it's been a transformative experience. It's a reminder that the world is full of beauty, wonder, and connection. I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this special place, and I look forward to sharing my journey with you all.

Safe travels, and may your own adventures be filled with joy and discovery!

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Zurich. It will be nice to see Ana and Luka, but I will surely miss the Douro Valley. Until next time!
