Family Adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 4: Iceland's Hidden Gems: Basalt Cliffs and Mineral Springs
Exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula's unique geological wonders, from Gerðuberg Cliffs' basalt columns to Ölkelduvatn's mineral spring.

Snaefellsnes Surprises: Cliffs and Springs
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. We traded glacier views for towering cliffs and bubbling springs, diving headfirst into the geological wonders that make this corner of Iceland so unique. It was a day of unexpected discoveries and a deeper connection with the Icelandic landscape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lýsuhóll. It's a charming place, and I was really happy to find out that it is a family-run horse farm offering horseback riding tours. I made a mental note to see if Luka would be interested in doing that tomorrow. After breakfast, we set off towards the Gerðuberg Cliffs.

Gerðuberg Cliffs: Nature's Fortress
As we approached the Gerðuberg Cliffs, I was immediately struck by their imposing presence. These aren't just any cliffs; they're a geological marvel, a wall of perfectly shaped hexagonal basalt columns rising dramatically from the earth. It felt like we were standing before an ancient fortress, built not by human hands, but by the slow, deliberate artistry of nature. Ana, with her architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the symmetry and precision of the columns. Luka, of course, was more interested in climbing them, a pursuit we gently discouraged.
We walked along the base of the cliffs, marveling at the sheer scale and the intricate patterns etched into the stone. It's incredible to think that these columns were formed thousands of years ago, during a volcanic eruption when rivers of basaltic lava flowed and cooled, creating these unique pillar shapes. Standing there, surrounded by this geological wonder, I felt a profound sense of connection to the Earth's history. The cliffs are easily accessible from Highway 54, which made it a very convenient stop. I read somewhere that in winter, you can enjoy interesting icicle formations there, and it was indeed the case.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring: A Taste of Iceland
Our next stop was Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring, a place that promised a different kind of sensory experience. This isn't your typical crystal-clear mountain spring; Ölkelduvatn offers naturally carbonated water straight from the ground, infused with a unique blend of minerals. The drive to the spring was beautiful, winding through the snow-dusted landscape of the peninsula.

When we arrived, we found a small, unassuming well, marked by a simple sign. For a small donation, you can pump the water directly into your bottle. I took a tentative sip, and the taste was… surprising. It's definitely not your average water; the high mineral content gives it a slightly metallic, almost fizzy flavor. Ana and Luka weren't particularly fond of it, but I found it strangely refreshing, a unique taste of Iceland's geology. It reminded me a bit of some of the mineral waters I've tried back in Slovenia, though with a distinctly Icelandic twist.
I read that the spring contains calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron, fluorine, chlorine, sulfate, bicarbonate, and carbon dioxide. It's like nature's own soda fountain, and it was quite an experience.
Álfar og Tröll ehf: A Shopping Interlude
After our mineral spring adventure, we decided to stop by Álfar og Tröll ehf, a gift shop in Grundarfjörður. I am not usually a fan of gift shops, but Ana insisted, and I have to admit, this one was quite charming. It's a treasure trove of Icelandic culture and craftsmanship, filled with handcrafted souvenirs, local art, and unique gifts. We spent some time browsing the shelves, admiring the intricate woolen goods and the whimsical trinkets inspired by Icelandic folklore. We ended up buying a few small souvenirs for friends back home, little reminders of our Icelandic adventure.

Culinary Delights: From Hótel Snaefellsnes to Arnarstapi
For lunch, we stopped at Hótel Snaefellsnes. The hotel is located amidst the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The restaurant served traditional Icelandic dinners with organic ingredients. I had a lamb dish, while Ana opted for a vegetarian option. Luka, of course, went for the fish and chips.

In the evening, we drove to Arnarstapi for dinner at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. I was quite taken by Arnarstapi. Arnarstapi is a village with black-stoned beaches strewn with remnants from a shipwreck. The restaurant highlights local produce in their cuisine. The restaurant has a nice vibe and a great view from the windows. I had the fish soup, which was amazing. Ana tried the pasta with white wine sauce and Luka had a burger. We were all happy with our meals.

Looking Ahead
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the unique beauty and geological wonders we had experienced. From the imposing basalt columns of Gerðuberg Cliffs to the surprising taste of Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring, it was a day of discovery and connection with the Icelandic landscape. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the lava rock formations and the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. We also intend to have a drink at Narfeyrarstofa. Good night from Snaefellsnes!
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of the coastline, seeking out the dramatic lava rock formations and the iconic Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. And perhaps, if the weather cooperates, we'll even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing above the peninsula. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this extraordinary corner of the world.

Join us for a family adventure exploring Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula's volcanic landscapes, glaciers, and charming villages.
