Family Adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 3: Shark Tales and Hidden Gorges: A Day of Discovery on Snaefellsnes
Delving into Icelandic traditions at the Shark Museum and exploring the mystical Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
A Day of Icelandic Oddities and Natural Wonders
Today was a day of embracing the unusual and exploring the raw beauty of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. From sampling fermented shark to navigating a hidden gorge, it was an adventure that truly awakened the senses. The Icelandic landscape never ceases to amaze, and today was no exception, offering a blend of cultural immersion and physical exploration that left me both humbled and exhilarated.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Agnið Streetfood in Stykkishólmur. It was a bit chilly, around 4°C, but the food truck was cozy enough. I opted for the fish tacos, a recommendation I'd seen online, and they were indeed delicious. Ana and Luka enjoyed some traditional Icelandic pastries, fueling up for the day's adventures. It's funny how a simple meal can set the tone for the day, and this one promised excitement.
Our first stop was the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum. Now, I'll admit, I approached this with a healthy dose of trepidation. Fermented shark, or hákarl, isn't exactly known for its delicate aroma. But, as I always tell myself, when in Iceland… The museum itself was fascinating, detailing the history of shark fishing and the traditional methods of preparing hákarl. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the entire process from catch to consumption. It was a surprisingly engaging experience, and Luka was particularly interested in the old fishing boats and tools on display.

Then came the moment of truth: the tasting. I took a deep breath, grabbed a small piece, and… well, it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. The initial smell was certainly potent, a mix of ammonia and fish, but the taste was milder than expected. It had a slightly chewy texture and a distinct, though not overpowering, flavor. I chased it down with a shot of Brennivín, Iceland's signature spirit, which definitely helped. Ana and I managed to politely swallow our portions, while Luka, ever the adventurous one, actually seemed to enjoy it!
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that push you outside your comfort zone.
After the shark museum, we needed something to clear our palates, so we headed towards Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. The drive itself was stunning, with snow-dusted mountains rising on either side of the road. As we approached the gorge, the landscape became even more dramatic, a narrow cleft in the mountainside hinting at the hidden wonders within. According to what I read, the best time to visit the gorge is during summer, but I was up for the winter challenge!

The path to the gorge was icy in places, requiring careful footing. I was glad we'd all worn our hiking boots. Luka, of course, was in his element, scrambling over rocks and pretending to be an intrepid explorer. Ana, ever cautious, took a more measured approach, but even she couldn't resist the allure of the gorge.
The entrance to Rauðfeldsgjá is narrow and unassuming, but once inside, you're transported to another world. The towering rock walls, covered in moss and ice, create a sense of enclosed grandeur. A stream runs through the gorge, and we had to carefully pick our way over the rocks to avoid getting our feet wet. The sound of rushing water echoed around us, adding to the mystical atmosphere.
We ventured as far into the gorge as we dared, clambering over slippery rocks and marveling at the frozen waterfalls clinging to the walls. It was a truly breathtaking sight, a hidden gem tucked away in the Icelandic wilderness. I can imagine it being even more spectacular in the summer, but there was something special about experiencing it in the depths of winter, a sense of solitude and raw beauty that was unforgettable.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Stapinn in Arnarstapi for a late lunch. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, a welcome respite from the cold. We enjoyed some hearty Icelandic fare, warming ourselves from the inside out. The views from the restaurant were stunning, overlooking the dramatic coastline and the iconic basalt columns of Arnarstapi. I made a mental note to explore the area further on another day; perhaps tomorrow, if the weather permits, we can take a walk along the coast towards Hellnar.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Kaffi 59 in Grundarfjörður. The bar had a cozy, local feel, and we enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and fellow patrons. Luka, of course, stuck to juice, but Ana and I savored a couple of local beers, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Finally, for dinner, we drove to Hjá Góðu Fólki, a charming restaurant known for its fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the tomato soup, which was, without exaggeration, the best I've ever tasted. Ana opted for the fish soup, while Luka devoured a plate of homemade pasta. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a culinary experience that left us feeling nourished and content.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, the Northern Lights began to dance across the sky. It was a fitting finale to a day filled with wonder and adventure. The aurora borealis shimmered and swirled, painting the night sky with vibrant colors. We pulled over to the side of the road, bundled up in our warmest clothes, and watched in awe as the celestial display unfolded above us. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the incredible beauty and power of nature.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Gerðuberg Cliffs and the Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. I'm particularly excited about the mineral spring, as I've heard its waters have unique healing properties. I am also looking forward to stopping by Álfar og Tröll ehf, a shop I found in my research that sells local crafts. It sounds like another day of discovery and adventure awaits, and I can't wait to see what the Snaefellsnes Peninsula has in store for us.
Reflecting on today, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences that Iceland offers. From the bizarre culinary traditions to the breathtaking natural landscapes, there's something here for everyone. And while the weather can be unpredictable and the terrain challenging, the rewards are immeasurable. It's a place that awakens the senses, challenges the spirit, and leaves you with memories that will last a lifetime.
