A Day of Discovery on Naoshima
Today was all about uncovering some of Naoshima's lesser-known treasures. While the big museums are incredible, there's something special about venturing off the beaten path and finding those quiet, contemplative corners of the island. I was eager to experience a different side of Naoshima, and today certainly delivered.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. This charming café-bar, housed in a renovated marine container, is just a short walk from the Miyanoura Port. It’s known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious homemade meals. I opted for their signature dry curry, while Ana and Luka enjoyed some freshly baked pastries. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.
After breakfast, we set out for the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. Located in a valley between Mt. Hoshigajo and Shihozashi, the tower promised panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the top was a bit strenuous, especially in the August heat, but the view was more than worth it. From the summit, we could see the Seto Inland Sea dotted with islands, each one a tiny jewel in a vast expanse of blue. Luka was particularly fascinated by the unique rock formations, and I tried my best to explain how they were formed over millions of years. The tower itself isn't just a viewing platform; it's a place to breathe in the serenity of the island and appreciate the natural beauty that complements the art so well.

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something that changes how you see the world.
Next on our list was the Walking Ark. This sculpture by Keisuke Yamaguchi is inspired by Noah's Ark and appears like a mountain range with legs. It was created as a reminder of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, envisioning the work walking off towards Fukushima Prefecture. We found it nestled in the town of Ogicho. From certain angles, the piece blends seamlessly with the mountain ranges of Shikoku in the distance. The symbolism of the ark, a vessel of hope and resilience, resonated deeply with me. It’s a powerful reminder of the human spirit's ability to endure and rebuild, even in the face of immense tragedy. Luka, ever curious, wanted to know if the ark could really walk. I explained that it was a symbol, a way for the artist to express hope and solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

Our afternoon was dedicated to the Ando Museum. This museum is a tribute to the work of Tadao Ando, the architect behind many of Naoshima's iconic structures. Housed in a renovated 100-year-old traditional wooden house in Honmura, the museum itself is a work of art. The contrast between the traditional exterior and the modern concrete interior is striking, a hallmark of Ando's style. Inside, we explored photographs, sketches, and models of Ando's projects, gaining a deeper understanding of his vision and his connection to Naoshima. The way he integrates concrete with the natural landscape is truly inspiring. Ana, being an architect herself, was particularly fascinated by the museum. She pointed out the subtle details in the design, the way Ando plays with light and shadow to create a sense of depth and space. Luka, perhaps unsurprisingly, was most interested in the models, imagining himself as a tiny architect building his own concrete masterpieces. The museum provided a condensed taste of Tadao Ando's architectural philosophy of overlapping conflicting elements.

As evening approached, we found ourselves craving a comforting meal. We decided to try Gumbo Hut Shioya. This charming Cajun restaurant is a bit of a surprise on a Japanese art island, but it came highly recommended. The owner, Buddy, has visited the American South over 30 times and opened Gumbo Hut out of a deep passion for Southern culture and cuisine. The restaurant is decorated with portraits of blues legends, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I ordered the classic sausage and chicken gumbo, while Ana opted for the vegetarian version. The gumbo was rich, flavorful, and surprisingly authentic. It was a taste of Louisiana in the heart of Japan. Luka, who is usually a picky eater, devoured his portion, declaring it the best soup he had ever tasted.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by Guest Room Aoitori for a nightcap. This budget-friendly Japanese inn has a cozy bar that's popular with locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed a glass of local Naoshima beer, while Ana sipped on a plum wine. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences that Naoshima has to offer. It's not just about the famous museums and large-scale installations; it's also about the hidden gems, the quiet moments of contemplation, and the unexpected culinary delights. Each experience adds a layer to the island's unique character, making it a place that truly captivates the senses and nourishes the soul.
Tomorrow marks our last day on Naoshima. We plan to visit the Benesse House Museum, see the Red Pumpkin, and explore Naoshima Hall. It's hard to believe our family adventure is coming to an end, but I'm determined to make the most of our final day on this magical island.
