Golden Beginnings in Kyoto

Arriving in Kyoto, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of history and tranquility that I've rarely encountered. Today was all about immersing myself in the city's iconic temples and gardens, a journey that promised to be both visually stunning and deeply enriching. From the shimmering Kinkaku-ji to the serene rock garden of Ryoan-ji, and the imperial elegance of Ninna-ji Temple, Kyoto unveiled its ancient soul, leaving me in awe of its beauty and cultural depth.

My day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a quick bite at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. Truth be told, I was hoping for something more traditional, but the convenience and the promise of a quick and easy breakfast won me over. As I planned to explore temples and gardens, I knew comfortable shoes were essential, and I was glad I remembered to pack them. I made a mental note to buy a portable charger, since I had forgotten mine, and I did not want to run out of battery while taking pictures.

My first stop was the famed Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As the bus approached, my excitement grew. I had seen countless photos, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer brilliance of the temple shimmering in the morning light. It was even more magical than I had imagined.

The temple, covered in gold leaf, stood majestically overlooking the Kyoko-chi Pond. Luckily, the weather was clear, so the reflection of the pavilion on the water was stunning. The crisp February air added to the serenity of the scene, making it a perfect start to my Kyoto adventure. I took my time wandering through the meticulously maintained gardens, trying to capture the perfect photo from every angle. Despite the crowds, a sense of peace permeated the air, a testament to the temple's spiritual significance.

Next on my itinerary was Ryoan-ji Temple, famous for its enigmatic Zen rock garden. After a short bus ride, I arrived at the temple and made my way to the garden. Fifteen rocks are arranged in a bed of meticulously raked white gravel, surrounded by low earthen walls. The garden invites contemplation and introspection. What makes it so special is that from any vantage point, one of the rocks is always hidden, prompting reflection on perspective and the nature of reality.

I sat on the wooden veranda, gazing at the garden, trying to decipher its meaning. It was a challenge to block out the noise of other tourists, but I eventually found a quiet corner where I could meditate on the arrangement of the rocks. I found myself drawn into the garden's simplicity, appreciating the careful balance of elements and the sense of harmony it evoked. It was a welcome contrast to the opulence of Kinkaku-ji, offering a different kind of spiritual experience.

Before heading to my next destination, I popped into the Kyoto Crafts Store, hoping to find a unique souvenir. I was immediately drawn to the intricate craftsmanship on display, from delicate ceramics to vibrant textiles. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted tea bowl as a memento of my visit. I must remember to buy some tea when I get home to fully appreciate it. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was glad to find a piece that reflected the beauty and artistry of Kyoto.

My final stop for the day was Ninna-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich imperial history. Founded in 888 CE by Emperor Uda, it served as both a temple and an imperial residence. The vast complex exudes a sense of grandeur and tranquility, with its elegant buildings, serene gardens, and five-story pagoda. I explored the temple grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. The temple's connection to the imperial family is evident in its design and layout, offering a glimpse into the lives of Japan's former rulers. The weather was starting to turn, with a slight drizzle adding a mystical quality to the surroundings.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Hafuu for dinner, eager to sample some authentic Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly staff made me feel right at home. I ordered the Wagyu steak, which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on my first day in Kyoto, I am struck by the city's ability to seamlessly blend history, culture, and natural beauty. Each temple and garden I visited offered a unique perspective on Japan's rich heritage, leaving me with a sense of wonder and appreciation. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up a mountainside. I also plan to visit the Tofuku-ji Temple and the Sanjusangendo Temple. To end the day, I am planning to visit the L'Escamoteur bar. I am sure that this will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. For now, I will rest, recharge, and dream of golden pavilions and Zen gardens.

I am happy I decided to embark on this solo trip. Ana and Luka are missing out, but I will make sure to bring them next time.

Kyoto in February is cool, with average temperatures ranging from 2°C to 10°C (36°F to 50°F). It's mostly dry, with occasional light rain. I made sure to pack layers, including a warm coat, sweater, and comfortable walking shoes. A small umbrella would have been useful, but I forgot to pack it. I will buy one tomorrow.

Here are some of my observations:

  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): The shimmering golden temple reflected in the Kyoko-chi Pond is a sight to behold. Arrive early to avoid the crowds.
  • Ryoan-ji Temple: The enigmatic Zen rock garden invites contemplation and introspection. Take your time to appreciate the garden's simplicity and balance.
  • Ninna-ji Temple: Explore the vast complex with its elegant buildings, serene gardens, and five-story pagoda. The temple's connection to the imperial family is evident in its design and layout.
  • Kyoto Crafts Store: Support local artisans and find unique souvenirs reflecting the beauty and artistry of Kyoto.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
