Day 4: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Kyoto's Ancient Streets and Temples
Discover the enchanting beauty of Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka in Kyoto. A journey through history, culture and culinary delights.
A Day of Ancient Echoes
Today was a day of wandering through the heart of old Kyoto, a journey that felt like stepping back in time. From the serene heights of a temple to the charming, narrow streets lined with traditional shops, every corner held a new discovery. I was eager to immerse myself in the city's rich history and culture, and today certainly delivered on that promise.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. Though the online reviews were a mixed bag, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. It was a great start to the day, setting me up perfectly for the adventures that lay ahead. I fueled up with a traditional Japanese breakfast set that provided the energy I needed for a day of exploration. I always appreciate starting my day with a good meal; it sets the tone for the entire day.
My first stop was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple nestled in the eastern hills of Kyoto. Founded in 780, its history is palpable, and I could feel the weight of centuries as I walked through its gates. The temple is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering panoramic views of Kyoto. Even in February, the landscape was stunning, with the city spread out beneath me like a living map. It's easy to see why this spot is so popular; the view alone is worth the trip.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends the past with the present.
The temple complex itself is a treasure trove of sights. The three-storied Koyasu Pagoda stood tall against the sky, and I took a moment to appreciate its architectural beauty. I also visited the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from three separate streams of water, each said to offer a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. I opted for the longevity stream, hoping for many more years of travel and adventure. The winter air was crisp and clean, making the experience even more refreshing. I also explored the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. I didn't linger too long, but it was interesting to see the many ema (wooden plaques) with prayers for love and happiness.
Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, I made my way down to Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, two beautifully preserved historical streets. These narrow, sloping lanes are lined with traditional wooden storefronts, teahouses, and shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. It felt like stepping into a movie set, with every building exuding old-world charm. According to local legend, if you fall on Sannenzaka, you'll die in three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you'll die in two. I made sure to watch my step!

The streets were bustling with activity, but there was still a sense of tranquility. I strolled along, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and popping into various shops. I bought a few small souvenirs for Ana and Luka, knowing they would appreciate a little piece of Kyoto. I also stopped at a traditional teahouse for a cup of matcha, savoring the bitter-sweet flavor and the peaceful atmosphere. It was a welcome break from the crowds.
For lunch, I ventured into Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. The reviews I had read highlighted its calm atmosphere and delicate dashi flavors, and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed a delicious meal of oden, a traditional Japanese hot pot, with a variety of local ingredients. It was the perfect way to warm up on a chilly day. The private room added to the intimate and authentic experience, making it a truly memorable meal.

As the day wore on, I continued to explore the streets, soaking in the atmosphere and taking plenty of photos. I found myself drawn to the small details: the intricate latticework on the windows, the colorful fabrics hanging in the shops, the gentle sound of running water in a nearby garden. It was these small moments that truly captured the essence of Kyoto for me.
Dinner was at Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, a restaurant known for its exceptional tonkatsu. Despite a few mixed reviews, I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant was tucked away down a narrow alley, adding to its charm. I opted for the classic tonkatsu set, and it was superb. The pork was tender and juicy, the breading was crispy and light, and the homemade sauce was the perfect complement. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with culinary delights.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit The Common One Bar Kyoto. I had read about its unique atmosphere, blending traditional Kyoto elements with a modern bar setting. It was a bit difficult to find, hidden away in a quiet corner of the city, but that only added to its allure. The bar featured tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a space where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously. I enjoyed a carefully crafted cocktail, chatting with the bartender and soaking in the ambiance. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring.

Spending the day solo allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience. While I miss Ana and Luka, I know they would have enjoyed seeing the pictures and hearing my stories. I am looking forward to sharing all of my experiences with them when I return to Zurich. Maybe we can plan a trip back here as a family in the future. I'm sure Luka would love the bamboo forest!
