Solo Adventure to the Majestic Škocjan Caves
Day 6: Farewell, Škocjan: Reflecting on Slovenia's Hidden Gems
A final day exploring Slovenia's Škocjan, from natural parks to cinematic history, savoring local flavors and reflecting on a solo journey.
A Fond Farewell to Škocjan
As my Slovenian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the unique beauty and tranquility of the Škocjan region. My final day was a blend of natural exploration, cultural immersion, and, of course, indulging in the local cuisine. It's amazing how much one can discover when venturing out solo, allowing for spontaneous detours and a deeper connection with the surroundings.
The crisp morning air invigorated me as I set out for Medjame Natural Park. The park was only a short trip away. I decided to have a quick breakfast first. Ošterija Na Planinci was the perfect spot. I enjoyed a hearty breakfast that set the tone for a day of exploration. The restaurant has a great reputation for tasty dishes and a cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect way to start my day.

The park was a refreshing experience. The area was once popular with fisherman but had become overgrown. As part of a recent project, a wooden walkway was built through the park. Now you can walk among the trees and greenery with the birds chirping all around. The peace and beauty of the park was a great way to start the day.
Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world.
After immersing myself in nature, I felt a pull towards something different: the Muzej slovenskih filmskih igralcev, or the Museum of Slovenian Film Actors. It was in Divača, and I was interested in learning more about Slovenian cinema. The museum is located in the renovated Škratelj Homestead, a beautiful example of traditional Karst architecture. As I walked through the exhibits, I was struck by the dedication to preserving Slovenia's film heritage. The museum has exhibits dedicated to the actress Ita Rina, who was born in Divača. There is also an exhibit dedicated to Slovenian film actors. The museum also hosts workshops and film screenings. It's a testament to the country's commitment to its artistic legacy.

Feeling a bit peckish after my cinematic exploration, I decided to grab lunch at Magdalena Food & Fun in Postojna. The restaurant is near the Postojna Cave Park. I had a terrific vegan burger. The service was great, and the staff was friendly.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I found myself drawn to a local establishment for a pre-dinner drink. Itak bar, Danijel Stjepanović s.p., in Divača, proved to be a hidden gem. The staff are very kind, and the atmosphere is great. I enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some locals.

For my final dinner in Slovenia, I chose Ambrožič Restaurant, near the Škocjan Caves. The restaurant has a charming summer garden. They serve Slovenian dishes and modern cuisine. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past few days. The staff was friendly and the service was great. Many people recommend the wild mushrooms, pork with Gorgonzola, and the hamburgers. I decided to try the wild mushrooms and was not disappointed.

As I packed my bags, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this solo adventure. Slovenia, with its Škocjan Caves and surrounding beauty, had offered me a unique opportunity for reflection and discovery. I'll be flying back to Zurich tomorrow, carrying with me not just photographs and souvenirs, but also a renewed sense of appreciation for the world's hidden gems. Ana and Luka will be happy to see me and hear all about my adventures.
This trip reminded me of the importance of slowing down and connecting with nature, something I often miss amidst the hustle of Zurich. Perhaps I can convince Ana and Luka to join me on a similar adventure next time, sharing the beauty and tranquility I've found here. Until then, Slovenia, hvala lepa – thank you for the memories.
