Beneath the Surface

Today was all about embracing the call of the unknown, venturing into the shadowy depths of Slovenia's karst region. Leaving the familiar sights of the surface world behind, I set out to explore two distinct cave systems near Škocjan, each promising its own unique subterranean narrative. It's a journey into the heart of the Earth, a reminder of the hidden wonders that lie just beneath our feet.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Ošterija Na Planinci. I fueled up with some local delicacies, knowing I'd need the energy for a day of exploration. The restaurant had a cozy, family-run atmosphere, and the food was simple but satisfying – exactly what I needed before heading underground. I remembered Ana mentioning a similar place we visited in Škofja Loka when we were younger. These familiar tastes always bring back fond memories of home.

My first destination was Jama Velika Šprinčnica. The crisp November air nipped at my cheeks as I made my way towards Povir, the village where the cave is located. The landscape was painted in the muted tones of late autumn, the trees standing bare against the grey sky. I decided to walk from the Škocjan Caves Visitor Center, following the marked hiking paths towards Povir. The hike took roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing me to enjoy the scenery.

Arriving at Jama Velika Šprinčnica, I was immediately struck by the serene beauty of the location. The entrance to the cave was nestled amidst lush greenery, a stark contrast to the darkness that lay within. As I stepped inside, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the air grew heavy with moisture. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional drip of water. The cave is located at an altitude of 504 meters.

To truly see the world, one must be willing to step into the shadows.

Exploring the cave felt like stepping into another world. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like frozen waterfalls, while stalagmites rose from the ground, reaching towards their counterparts above. These formations, sculpted over millennia, created an otherworldly landscape of intricate shapes and textures. I spent hours wandering through the chambers, marveling at the raw beauty of nature's artistry. The cool, damp environment provided a refreshing escape, especially after the long hike.

After immersing myself in the depths of Jama Velika Šprinčnica, I surfaced, blinking in the soft afternoon light. A quick stop at Hram in špajza was next on the list. I wanted to pick up some local delicacies to bring back to Zurich. I selected a few jars of ajvar, a roasted red pepper spread, and some pumpkin seed oil, both staples in Slovenian cuisine. These flavors would be a welcome reminder of my homeland when I returned to Switzerland.

Next on the agenda was Spodmol pri Črnotičah. This cave, whose location and cartographic data are available , presented a different kind of experience. Unlike the grandeur of Jama Velika Šprinčnica, Spodmol pri Črnotičah felt more intimate, more rugged. It was a smaller cave, but no less captivating.

The entrance to Spodmol pri Črnotičah was hidden away in a secluded spot, requiring a bit of scrambling to reach. As I descended into the cave, I was immediately enveloped in darkness. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was almost deafening. I switched on my headlamp, casting a beam of light into the inky blackness. The cave is known for its limestone formations.

Inside, the cave was a maze of narrow passages and low-ceilinged chambers. I crawled and squeezed my way through the tunnels, feeling like a true explorer. The walls were rough and uneven, and the floor was covered in loose rocks and pebbles. In the heat of summer, the cave climate, with its average of eight degrees Celsius, is a godsend. The entrance part is usually the most refreshing, as it is where the outside and inside air mix.

As I ventured deeper into the cave, I came across several underground lakes. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the beam of my headlamp like a mirror. I could see small fish swimming in the depths, their silver scales shimmering in the light. The cave is full of potholes, washed walls, and lakes.

Emerging from Spodmol pri Črnotičah, I felt a sense of accomplishment. It had been a challenging but rewarding experience, one that had pushed me both physically and mentally. I drove to Magdalena Food & Fun for a late lunch. I opted for a traditional Slovenian dish – štruklji, a rolled dough pastry filled with various sweet or savory fillings. It was the perfect way to replenish my energy after a day of caving.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Ambrožič Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was known for its traditional Slovenian cuisine, and I was eager to sample some of the local specialties. I ordered jota, a hearty bean and sauerkraut stew, and enjoyed it with a glass of local red wine. The warm, comforting meal was the perfect end to a day of subterranean exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Postojna Cave and Grad Školj. I've heard great things about Postojna Cave, and I'm eager to see its famous stalactites and stalagmites. Grad Školj, a nearby castle, should provide a fascinating glimpse into the region's history. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in Slovenia's beautiful karst region.
