Echoes in the Dark: A Day of Caves and Castles

Today was a journey into the heart of Slovenia, a day where I traded the familiar sunlight for the mysterious allure of the underground. It's fascinating how much history and natural beauty can be hidden beneath our feet, waiting to be discovered. From the echoing chambers of a world-renowned cave to the silent ruins of a once-proud castle, today was a testament to the stories etched in stone and whispered by the wind.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ambrožič Restaurant. Located near the Škocjan Caves Park, it was a convenient and tasty start to the day. I fueled up with some classic Slovenian fare, eager to explore the wonders that awaited me. The restaurant was cozy, and I could tell it's a popular spot for those visiting the caves. It's always nice to start the day with a good meal and a sense of anticipation for what's to come. I made a mental note to try their homemade beer next time.

First on the agenda was the magnificent Postojna Cave. As someone who appreciates natural wonders, I was excited to see this famous cave system. The weather in Postojna in November is cold and breezy, with average highs of 50°F (10°C) and lows of 38°F (3°C). So, I bundled up before heading out. The cave is about half an hour's drive from Ljubljana, and easily accessible.
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the operation. Postojna Cave is a major tourist attraction, and the infrastructure reflects that. There are large parking areas and clear signs directing visitors. I joined a guided tour, and we hopped on a train that took us deep into the cave. The train ride was an experience in itself, winding through narrow tunnels and vast halls adorned with stalactites and stalagmites.

The ride under magnificent arches, adorned by stalactites resembling chandeliers and through narrow passages, highlighted by perfectly placed lights, is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

The cave is truly stunning. The formations are otherworldly, shaped over millions of years by the Pivka River. Our guide shared fascinating facts about the cave's geology and the unique creatures that call it home, including the famous olm, or baby dragon. The sheer size of some of the chambers is awe-inspiring; the Concert Hall can accommodate thousands of people.

After the cave tour, I grabbed a quick lunch at Magdalena Food & Fun. This restaurant is located near the entrance to the Postojna Cave Park, and they offer variety of gourmet burgers, boutique beers, and homemade iced teas. I opted for their vegan burger. It was tasty and satisfying. The restaurant has a modern, inviting atmosphere, and the service was fast. It's a great place to relax and refuel after exploring the cave.

With the underground explored, I set my sights on Grad Školj, also known as Castle Školj. The ruins are located near the village of Famlje, not far from the Škocjan Caves. The drive was scenic, winding through the Karst region's rolling hills. The countryside in this part of Slovenia is truly beautiful, even in November.

Grad Školj sits on a rocky hill overlooking the Reka River valley. The castle dates back to the 13th century and has a rich history. It was once a residence for the Counts of Devin from Italy and later passed through the hands of various noble families. Today, only ruins remain, but they still evoke a sense of the past.

I spent some time wandering through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like within those walls. The views from the castle are panoramic, stretching across the valley and towards the distant hills. It's easy to see why this location was chosen for a fortress; it commands a strategic position. Although much of the castle is gone, the remaining stones whisper stories of battles, alliances, and the lives of those who once called it home.

Grad Školj promises an enriching experience that combines history, culture, and stunning natural beauty.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Bar Gabriela Gabrijela Vivian Weber s.p. for a relaxing drink. It's located in Sežana. The bar had a local feel, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I decided to try Ošterija Na Planinci. It's located in Divaccia, not far from the Škocjan Caves. The restaurant has a cozy, rustic atmosphere and is known for its traditional Slovenian cuisine. I ordered gnocchi with wild garlic and a local beer. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploring the Slovenian countryside. The service was friendly and efficient.

Today was a reminder of how much there is to discover, both above and below the surface. Slovenia continues to surprise me with its hidden gems and rich history. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to explore Rodiška jama and Vrabčna jama. I'm also planning to visit Conor's Adventure shop. Good night!

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the Karst region, exploring the Rodiška and Vrabčna Jama caves. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Conor's Adventure shop in the area. It's exciting to anticipate what new wonders await me on this solo adventure.

Tonight, I'm filled with anticipation for the adventures that tomorrow holds. I'm also grateful for the chance to experience the beauty and history of Slovenia, a country that continues to surprise and delight me at every turn.
