Exploring the Geothermal Marvels of Kerlingarfjöll
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Woolly Wonders in Iceland's Highlands
Mary and Jean-Pierre explore Iceland's hidden waterfalls and charming wool shops, experiencing the raw beauty and cozy craftsmanship of the highlands.
Hidden Gems and Woolly Dreams
Today was all about embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in the raw, untamed landscapes of Iceland. Jean-Pierre and I set out with a plan, but as always, Iceland had a few surprises up its sleeve. From thundering waterfalls to cozy wool shops, it was a day of delightful discoveries.
Our day began, as always, with a hearty breakfast at Ásgarður in Kerlingarfjöll [where we're eating all our meals]. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore. First on the agenda was Hjálparfoss, a stunning double waterfall nestled in the Þjórsárdalur Valley. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and dramatic scenery unfolding around every bend. As we approached Hjálparfoss, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and soon we were greeted by the sight of two powerful streams merging into a single, breathtaking cascade.

The surrounding landscape was equally impressive, with rugged basalt columns framing the falls and volcanic ash scattered throughout the area, a stark reminder of the nearby Hekla volcano's past eruptions. We spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and marveling at the sheer force of nature. Although the weather was a bit chilly, with temperatures hovering around 6°C (43°F), the beauty of the falls more than made up for it. I was glad I had packed my waterproof jacket, as the mist from the falls created a constant drizzle.
It's in these moments, surrounded by such raw beauty, that I feel most connected to the world and to myself.
Next up was Gjáin, another hidden gem in the Þjórsárdalur Valley. Getting there required a bit of off-road driving, but Jean-Pierre handled the terrain like a pro. As we descended into the valley, it felt like entering another world. Lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and unique volcanic rock formations created an oasis of tranquility.

We hiked around the ravine, exploring the lava caves and admiring the smaller waterfalls that dotted the landscape. The red river Rauðá snaked its way through the valley, adding a splash of color to the scene. I couldn't help but feel like we had stumbled upon a secret garden, a place where time stood still and nature reigned supreme. The silence was broken only by the gentle sound of water and the occasional chirping of birds. It was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
After our waterfall adventures, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. I had heard about Vinnustofan Rosin, a charming wool shop known for its authentic Icelandic sweaters and goods. It was located a bit out of the way, but I was determined to find it. After a scenic drive, we arrived at the shop, which was nestled among a few houses set back from the road.

As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The shop was filled with colorful wool sweaters, scarves, and other handcrafted items. The rich textures and vibrant colors were a feast for the eyes, and I couldn't resist running my fingers over the soft wool. I was particularly drawn to the traditional Lopapeysa sweaters, known for their intricate patterns and warmth. I learned that the sheep are brought indoors around the time of the first snow in October and kept there until they had lambed in May.
After browsing for a while, I finally settled on a beautiful grey sweater with a classic Icelandic design. Jean-Pierre, not to be outdone, chose a cozy scarf in a deep blue hue. With our new woolly treasures in tow, we headed back to Ásgarður for dinner. The meal was delicious as always, and we savored every bite while reminiscing about our day's adventures.
As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared. Iceland had once again captivated us with its raw beauty and hidden gems. From the thundering waterfalls to the cozy wool shop, every moment had been a delight. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. We're planning to visit Deildartunguhver and go on a Langjokull Snowmobile Tour [tomorrow's itinerary], so I'm sure it will be another day filled with adventure and wonder.
The unpredictable weather in Iceland during October, with average temperatures ranging from 2°C to 7°C (36°F to 45°F) and frequent rainfall, requires being prepared for all conditions. Packing waterproof layers, warm accessories, and sturdy footwear is essential to fully enjoy the diverse landscapes and outdoor activities.
As I reflect on today's adventure, I am reminded of a quote by John Muir:
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
And how true that is! We came seeking waterfalls and woolly wonders, but we received so much more – a deeper connection to nature, a sense of peace and tranquility, and memories that will last a lifetime. Now, it's time to rest up and recharge for another day of exploring this incredible island.
Good night from Kerlingarfjöll!
