A Day of Ascents and Ancient Echoes

Today was all about embracing the heights and history of Nafplio. From the challenging climb up the Palamidi Path to exploring the ancient Sea Gate and indulging in the local flavors, it was a day filled with both physical exertion and cultural immersion. I love days like these, where I feel like I've truly earned my evening meal!

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Karamalis Tavern. I'd heard whispers about their authentic Greek offerings, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The warm, inviting atmosphere was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local honey, and Greek yogurt. It was the perfect fuel for the adventures that lay ahead. Karamalis Tavern is known for great service and friendly staff, and they certainly lived up to their reputation! I felt right at home.

With breakfast settling nicely, I set my sights on the Palamidi Path.

The Palamidi Fortress has always loomed large in my mind and on the Nafplio skyline, and the idea of conquering it via the scenic route was incredibly appealing. I knew it would be a challenging climb, but the promise of panoramic views kept me motivated. As I started my ascent, I was immediately struck by the tranquility and beauty of the path. Wildflowers lined the trail, their vibrant colors popping against the backdrop of the azure sea. The air was filled with the fragrant scent of herbs, a sensory delight that made the climb all the more enjoyable. The Palamidi Path is indeed a well-maintained walking trail offering stunning views of the bay.

The path itself was a mix of rocky terrain and uneven steps, a testament to the fortress's ancient origins. I took my time, pausing frequently to catch my breath and soak in the breathtaking scenery. From my vantage point, I could see the entire town of Nafplio spread out below me, its terracotta rooftops and winding streets creating a picturesque tableau. The sparkling waters of the Argolic Gulf stretched out to the horizon, dotted with sailboats and fishing boats. I could even see Bourtzi Castle in the distance, a tiny speck in the vast expanse of the sea. I made sure to bring my reusable water bottle, a habit I've cultivated to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste during my travels.

The climb may have been challenging, but the reward was well worth the effort.

Reaching the summit of Palamidi was an exhilarating experience. The fortress itself is an impressive feat of engineering, with its massive stone walls and imposing towers. Built by the Venetians in the 18th century, it has played a significant role in the region's history, serving as a strategic stronghold and a prison. I spent some time exploring the various bastions and ramparts, imagining what life must have been like for the soldiers who once manned these walls. The views from the top were simply unparalleled. I could see for miles in every direction, taking in the stunning coastline, the rolling hills of the Peloponnese, and the distant mountains. It was a moment of pure awe and gratitude, a reminder of the incredible beauty that our world has to offer.

After descending from Palamidi, I made my way to the Sea Gate.

Eager to explore another piece of Nafplio's rich history. The Land Gate was constructed using local granite by the Venetians in 1687. As I approached the gate, I couldn't help but marvel at its imposing structure and intricate details. The Sea Gate once served as the city's main entrance, connecting it to the sea and facilitating trade and transportation. Today, it stands as a testament to Nafplio's maritime past, a reminder of the days when the city was a bustling port and a major center of commerce. The authorities of the city offered its keys to the 18-year-old king Otto in front of the Land Gate.

I wandered through the gate and explored the surrounding area, soaking in the atmosphere of the old town. The narrow streets were filled with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants, each with its own unique character. I couldn't resist popping into The Cottons.

A local shop known for its handmade crafts and souvenirs. I browsed the shelves, admiring the intricate lacework, the colorful ceramics, and the quirky trinkets. I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted bowl, a perfect reminder of my time in Nafplio. I'm always on the lookout for unique, locally made items to bring back home, and The Cottons did not disappoint. It was more than just a shopping destination; it embodied the spirit of Nafplio, blending traditional Greek charm with contemporary retail.

By lunchtime, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I decided to stop for a bite at Zournal.

This charming eatery had caught my eye earlier in the day, and I was intrigued by its menu of modern Greek cuisine. I ordered a selection of mezes, small plates designed for sharing, and settled in to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious, a creative blend of traditional flavors and contemporary techniques. I especially loved the fried cheese, the falafel wrap, and the zucchini fritters. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. Zournal is well known for its great service and friendly staff, always ready to help you. I can certainly attest to that!

As the afternoon wore on, I continued to explore the town, wandering through its hidden alleyways and soaking in its unique charm. I stumbled upon a local art gallery, where I admired the works of talented Greek artists. I visited a small church, its walls adorned with intricate frescoes and icons. I sat in a quiet square, watching the locals go about their daily lives. In the evening, I treated myself to a delicious dinner at Palio Archontiko.

It is a charming taverna located in the Old Town, just north of the War Museum. The restaurant offered traditional homemade Greek dishes and Italian-influenced options at great prices. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was simply divine. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences I had enjoyed throughout the day.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Nafplio's history with visits to the Vouleftiko - First Parliament of Greece and the War Museum. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Allotino Coffee & Bar, a local favorite. Each day here brings new discoveries, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Nafplio has captured my heart with its beauty, its history, and its warm, welcoming spirit. It's a place that I know I will never forget, a place that I will always cherish. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring new adventures and new discoveries. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to explore the world and share my experiences with all of you. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

Being here solo has allowed me to be more spontaneous and open to new experiences. It's a different kind of travel than when I'm with Jean-Pierre, but equally rewarding. I miss him, of course, but I know he's cheering me on from Lyon, eager to hear all about my adventures when I return. Perhaps we can plan a trip back here together someday.

I almost forgot my portable phone charger today! Luckily, I remembered just in time. It's a small thing, but it can make a big difference when you're out and about all day. I really should have packed my Greek phrasebook, too. I'm finding that while many people speak English, knowing a few basic Greek phrases goes a long way in making connections and showing respect for the local culture.
