Day 5: A Royal Day Out: Palaces, Science, and Lisbon's Waters
Discover Sintra's Queluz Palace, the Science Workshop, and Lisbon's Tagus River on a day filled with royal history and scientific fun.
A Whirlwind of Wonders
Today was a delightful blend of history, science, and maritime charm. Sintra continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, and I couldn't wait to share all about our adventures. From exploring a stunning national palace to engaging with interactive science exhibits and finally taking a boat tour in Lisbon, it was a day packed with unforgettable experiences.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Taverna do Município. Jean-Pierre and I shared some delicious pastries and coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. The taverna had a lovely, cozy atmosphere, perfect for starting our day on a high note. I even managed to practice my Portuguese with the friendly staff!
Stepping Back in Time at Queluz National Palace
Our first stop was the Queluz National Palace, often referred to as the Portuguese Versailles. As we approached, the palace exuded an air of regal elegance. The architecture beautifully showcased the transition from Baroque to Rococo and Neoclassical styles, giving us a glimpse into the evolving tastes of the Portuguese royal family. The palace is located between Sintra and Lisbon. I learned that it was initially built in 1747 and served as a summer residence for the royal family.

Wandering through the palace, Jean-Pierre and I were mesmerized by the opulent interiors. The Throne Room was particularly breathtaking, with its ornate decorations and exquisite chandeliers. Every room told a story of royal life, from grand banquets to intimate family moments. The intricate details in the tilework and the vibrant frescoes were stunning, showcasing the artistry of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The gardens of Queluz were equally impressive. We strolled along the manicured lawns, admiring the fountains and sculptures that adorned the landscape. The Garden of Malta, with its elaborate water features, was a highlight. It was easy to imagine the royal family enjoying leisurely afternoons in this serene setting. The harmonious blend of landscape and palatial architecture truly made Queluz a remarkable experience.
We learned that the palace played a significant role during the transition from the Ancien Régime to Liberalism. The historical context added depth to our visit, making us appreciate the palace's significance even more.
Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
A Loja: A Treasure Trove of Local Crafts
Before lunch, we decided to do some shopping at A Loja, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. I was hoping to find something special to remind me of our time in Sintra, and A Loja did not disappoint. The shop was filled with an array of handmade ceramics, textiles, and other artisanal goods. I was particularly drawn to the hand-painted tiles, each depicting scenes from Portuguese history and culture. Jean-Pierre, always the practical one, admired the cork products, a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to leather.
