Discover the breathtaking views of Jebel Shams and the dramatic depths of Wadi Ghul, Oman's 'Grand Canyon,' on an unforgettable family adventure.
Oman's Majestic Heights
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a testament to Oman's raw beauty and dramatic landscapes. Leaving the familiar comforts of Nizwa, we embarked on a journey to Jebel Shams and Wadi Ghul, eager to witness the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia'. The anticipation was palpable, and even Aisha, usually engrossed in her storybooks, couldn't resist peeking out the window as the scenery transformed.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tamrah Restaurant & Cafe. Perched high above the city, the rooftop offered stunning views of Nizwa Fort, bathed in the soft morning light. I savored traditional Omani flavors while Hans enjoyed his usual strong coffee, and Aisha devoured a stack of pancakes. It’s moments like these, sharing a meal with my family while soaking in the local atmosphere, that truly make a trip special. It was a perfect start, filling us with energy for the adventures that lay ahead.

As we drove towards Jebel Shams, the landscape shifted dramatically. Gone were the lush date palm plantations; instead, we were greeted by rugged mountains and rocky terrain. I was so glad I remembered to pack our comfortable walking shoes; I had completely forgotten the sunscreen and hats, though! The ascent was steep, the road winding like a ribbon unfurled across the mountainside. I gripped the steering wheel, a mix of excitement and slight apprehension swirling within me. Hans, ever the calming presence, pointed out the unique rock formations and the hardy desert flora clinging to life on the steep slopes.
Finally, we reached Jebel Shams, the 'Mountain of the Sun'. The air was noticeably cooler, a welcome change from the warmth of Nizwa. We parked the car and stepped out, and the view...oh, the view! It was simply breathtaking. Before us lay Wadi Ghul, a chasm so deep and vast that it truly deserved its moniker, 'The Grand Canyon of Arabia'.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
We spent what felt like hours simply gazing at the vista, the immensity of the canyon dwarfing everything around us. Aisha was mesmerized, her little eyes wide with wonder. It's like a giant crack in the world, Mama! she exclaimed, her words echoing the awe I felt. I couldn't help but agree. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the sheer power and artistry of nature.
We explored several viewpoints along the canyon rim, each offering a unique perspective of the dramatic landscape. I was captivated by the play of light and shadow on the canyon walls, the way the colors shifted with the changing angle of the sun. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this majestic place, knowing full well that no image could ever truly do it justice.
I was intrigued by the abandoned village of Ghul, nestled at the foot of the canyon. It looked so peaceful from above. I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the people who once called this remote place home. It's the sense of history and the stories etched into the landscape that always draw me in, that make me feel connected to something larger than myself.
For lunch, we stopped at Bahjat Al Sham, a local restaurant known for its affordable and family-friendly atmosphere. The aroma of grilled meats and spices filled the air as we stepped inside. We feasted on a delicious mix of Turkish, Lebanese, and Egyptian dishes, savoring the flavors of the Middle East. Aisha particularly enjoyed the mutton biryani, declaring it the best she had ever tasted. Hans and I enjoyed some tasty kebabs. It was a delightful culinary experience, a perfect complement to the visual feast we had enjoyed earlier in the day.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Nizwa, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. We decided to have dinner at Hospitality Inn, drawn by its reputation for serving incredible Turkish, Indian, and Arabic cuisine. The restaurant was a hidden gem, the staff friendly and the ambiance inviting. We indulged in a flavorful array of dishes, from aromatic biryanis to succulent grilled meats, each bite a celebration of culinary artistry. Aisha, surprisingly, devoured the butter chicken, a testament to her adventurous palate. The portions were generous, and the prices reasonable, making it a perfect choice for a family dinner.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible beauty with my family. Oman continues to surprise and inspire me with its rich culture and stunning landscapes. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where warm hospitality is a way of life, and where adventure awaits around every corner.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Misfat al Abriyyin, a village known for its unique architecture and traditional way of life, and Al Hoota Cave, one of the largest cave systems in the world. Aisha is particularly excited about the cave, her imagination already running wild with tales of hidden treasures and mythical creatures. I am also hoping to stop by the Nizwa Ceramics Center to pick up some souvenirs. I am looking forward to another day of discovery, another day of creating memories that will last a lifetime.
As I write this, curled up in our guesthouse, I can't help but smile. Today was a reminder that the best journeys are not just about the places we see, but the moments we share with the people we love. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of towering canyons, starlit skies, and the warm embrace of Omani hospitality. Good night from Nizwa!
