Omani Echoes: Misfat, Caves, and Ceramics
Today was a journey through time and earth, a day where the ancient whispers of Oman resonated deeply within my soul. From the mud-brick lanes of a mountain village to the cool depths of a prehistoric cave, and finally, amidst the vibrant artistry of Omani ceramics, I felt an intimate connection to this land and its people. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and profound appreciation for the Sultanate's hidden treasures.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Liwan Restaurant. Aisha was particularly excited, having spotted the traditional Omani breads on the menu. Hans, ever the pragmatist, made sure we all had a good helping of dates to fuel our adventures. I opted for the lentil soup, a comforting and familiar flavor that reminded me of home. Liwan Restaurant, with its intricate decor and inviting atmosphere, set the perfect tone for a day steeped in Omani culture.

After breakfast, we set off for Misfat al Abriyyin, a mountain village famed for its unique mud-brick architecture and ancient irrigation systems. The drive itself was breathtaking, winding through rugged mountains that seemed to guard the secrets of Oman's past. As we ascended, the air grew cooler, a welcome change from the warmth of Nizwa.

Arriving at Misfat al Abriyyin felt like stepping into a living museum. The village, perched precariously on the mountainside, is a maze of narrow, stone-paved roads and houses built from mud, stone, and sarooj, a traditional water-resistant mortar. The architecture reminded me a bit of the Yemeni highlands, a testament to the shared cultural heritage of the region.

We wandered through the village, marveling at the ingenuity of the aflaj system, the ancient Omani irrigation channels that have sustained life here for centuries. These channels, carved into the rock, carry water from mountain springs to terraced fields where crops like mangoes, pomegranates, and bananas thrive. It's a testament to the Omani people's deep connection to the land and their ability to harness its resources sustainably.

Aisha was fascinated by the narrow passageways and staircases that crisscrossed the village. She loved peeking into the small gardens and courtyards, discovering hidden corners and vibrant bursts of bougainvillea. Hans, ever the photographer, found endless inspiration in the play of light and shadow on the mud-brick walls. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility in this ancient village, a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that transport us not just to a place, but to a different time, a different way of life.

After exploring Misfat al Abriyyin, we drove towards Al Hoota Cave, one of the largest and most spectacular cave systems in the world. The contrast between the sun-drenched village and the cool, dark depths of the cave was striking. Al Hoota Cave is estimated to be over two million years old, formed by the dissolution of limestone rocks by acidic water. It was discovered by a shepherd around 400 years ago.

The cave was opened as a tourist destination in 2006. To protect the ecosystem inside, the cave is kept gloomy and only tiny spotlights that the tour guides may turn on and off are used to illuminate the cave. We joined a guided tour that took us through a 500-meter stretch of the cave. The guide, a local Omani, shared fascinating insights into the cave's formation, its unique ecosystem, and the legends that surround it.

The cave is home to four underground lakes. One of the most remarkable inhabitants of Al Hoota Cave is the Garra barreimaie, a rare species of blind fish that has adapted to life in total darkness. These fish have grown a layer of skin over their unnecessary eyeballs. Seeing these creatures glide through the water was an almost surreal experience, a reminder of the incredible diversity of life on our planet.

Aisha was captivated by the stalactites and stalagmites, marveling at their intricate shapes and the stories they told of the passage of time. Hans, ever the geologist at heart, peppered the guide with questions about the cave's formation and the different types of rock formations. I found myself mesmerized by the silence and stillness of the cave, a sense of being transported to another world.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Al Jabal Alakhdar Restaurant, where we savored traditional Omani dishes amidst stunning mountain views. Though I had heard the Italian restaurant inside Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is also great. We tried Shuwa, a slow-cooked lamb dish, and Harees, a wheat and meat porridge, both bursting with flavor and spices. Aisha, surprisingly, enjoyed the Shuwa, while Hans declared the Harees his new favorite Omani dish.

In the afternoon, we visited the Nizwa Ceramics Center, eager to explore the artistry and craftsmanship of Omani ceramics. The center is a treasure trove of beautifully crafted pottery, tiles, and decorative pieces, each reflecting the unique heritage of Oman.

I was particularly drawn to the traditional Omani pots, embellished with three rings of rope-braid around the exterior, a technique used to reinforce urns made for storing heavy dates and date juice. These pots, with their earthy tones and simple designs, seemed to embody the essence of Omani culture: strong, resilient, and deeply connected to the land.

Aisha was fascinated by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the ceramic tiles, while Hans admired the skill and precision of the potters at work. I purchased a small incense burner, its delicate carvings a reminder of the fragrant aromas that permeate Omani homes and souks.

Before dinner, we visited the Nizwa Souk. The souk was a vibrant place, full of the aroma of spices and the energy of locals bargaining. The souk is one of the oldest markets in Oman. There is a Friday animal market. We wandered through the different sections, admiring the silver jewelry, textiles, and spices.

For dinner, we decided to try New Firq Restaurant, a family restaurant known for its Indian cuisine. We ordered butter chicken and lamb biryani, local favorites, along with freshly baked naan bread. The food was delicious and comforting, a welcome change from the Omani cuisine we had been enjoying. Aisha especially loved the mango lassi for dessert.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had journeyed through ancient villages, explored subterranean wonders, and immersed ourselves in the artistry of Omani ceramics. It was a day that had deepened my appreciation for this land and its people, a day that would stay with me long after we left Nizwa.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle. I’m excited to discover more of Oman’s rich history and architecture. Maybe we'll even pick up a Socca souvenir, with the Socca World Cup coming up soon. I'm also remembering that I forgot to pack sunscreen and a hat, so I will need to buy those tomorrow.
